I’ve always wanted to sing in a band. In high school, I sang in a religious sort of folky group called “Outreach” (two of our old members recently married after years apart, which I thought was kind of cool). I was also part of the Young Internationals, a group patterned on the Young Americans, if you remember them. We did lots of covers of pop music, and added dance moves to them for our act, but this was a school-sponsored group, so not really a band.
So those are as close as I ever got, aside from playing my guitar and singing folk music in occasional venues. My nephew, Jordan Martin, was actually in a band that hit the Billboard Christian music charts briefly, and now that the band is no more, he has a bunch of albums of his own (I think he’s very good, but then I’m biased). His former band’s name was Iconoclast. I always thought that was such a cool band name (and it turns out, a popular one–there are other bands with that name, I’ve discovered, which is sort of ironic, considering what it means).
Which brings me to the point of my post. If I had a band, it would have to have a really cool name. I mean, I love weird band names like Third Eye Blind and Crash Test Dummies, and I especially love all the Celtic band names: Peatbog Faeries and Old Blind Dogs and Enter the Haggis (three of my favorite bands; ETH is on the left). I’d want something like that, something unique, with a little hint of the historical (especially if I were doing traditional Celtic music). Something like “The Wench Brigade” or “Too Cool for My Band” or “Dickensian” (you’d be surprised how many bands there are with Dickens in their name). I think choosing the name would be my favorite part.
So what’s your favorite band name? (But keep that separate from the music, if you can–you don’t have to like their music, just their name.) If you could be in a band, what kind would it be (punk rock, heavy metal, Celtic fusion, pop, rap, etc.)? And what would be your cool band name?

eh – 1st one to post – went to a concert about a year ago – the band was called “saliva” – skeptical, but I went with it – they were actually very good, which surprised me, which doesn’t happen often…
Foo Fighters – don’t know what it means, but it’s totally different. LOVE THEM!!! and totally random, ditto U2 back in the 80′s, (wasn’t that the plane with Gary something or another that crashed in the 50′s)???
ditto Duran Duran (yeah, Barbarella, but I didn’t know it at the time)…
nowadays? How about “rode hard & put up wet”??, “brokeback spinal cord”, “I don’t need no stinking car seat!”, “stay at home but I’m not there, running errands, bee-yatch!”, “I don’t work outside the house, took a pay cut”…. ROTFL
ok – maybe I’m venting just a lee-tle, thanks for reading!! LOVE YOU fellow goddesses!! xoxoxoxo

Hi Nancyg and Sabrina. First things first, a Foo Fighter was what the Allied aircraft pilots called a UFO back in WW2. A band title that I just love is Chapter 3. I also love their song Just Can’t Live Without You. I am eclectic with my tastes in music and if I were to be in a band I guess the style would be either pop or Celtic. The Celtic band name would be Celtic Cat Goddesses (because you just know I am nuts about my cats) or for the pop band it would be The Cougars (and I would be the youngest member there and the lead singer).

MY friends and I play this game all the time.
The name for our first album is “Kitchenettes, Permanents and Transients” with the one-day hit single “Clay Oven Cocktails” – we decided could actually be a Cocteau Twins release.
Drawing a blank and the many band names I’ve wanted over the years.
Name I like of existing acts: Fountains of Wayne – I passed that monstrosity of a store for years, felt like I was in on the joke.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 6:50 am.
Out of band names that I like, my top 2 are U2 and Red Hot Chili Peppers. When someone asks you which bands you like, people who are only paying half attention to you are like what? I remember one time driving around with a friend, who was old enough to be my mother, one of my favorite Cure songs came on the radio and I go – Oh, the Cure! My friend replied, I didn’t think we were lost.
I never thought about having a band myself, but I would like one with a Celtic influence. Give it a folky rock sound with going from soft songs to hard stuff. I haven’t thought of any names for it, maybe something nautical like Whale’s Tale or something.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 7:23 am.
I’ve always liked The Fabulous Thunderbirds… You’ve got to have a lot of confidence to tell someone that you are Fabulous.
If I could sing well rather then … well I sing … I think I would like to be in a pop/punk band. Kinda Avril Lavigne.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 7:32 am.
I like the name “Bare Naked Ladies” just kindof cracks me up and I do like their music….but if I was the lead singer in a band, I’d be sort of an 80′s heavy metal chic with leather pants and bustier, long, big hair and my band’s name would be “Like No Other”.
Sabrina, I’d love to hear you sing sometime…maybe at RWA.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 7:46 am.
I have always liked the band name The Tragically Hip. They are a Canadian band and they also have great music. I am not a fan of their music, but I have always like the name Baby Shambles, as well.
I just had a dream the other night and in it my best friend and I were arguing over what we were going to name our band. I wanted to name it Pink Nylon and she wanted to name it Brash and Sassy. In my dream we were an all female punk group. I told her about the dream and we both had a great laugh over it.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 8:02 am.
I’ve always liked the name “Red Hot Chili Peppers” though I have no idea what they sing.
If I could be in a band it would have to be Rock, maybe hard rock because they always seem to have the most fun onstage. The name would be “Let’s Get Caffeinated.”
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 8:26 am.
Sabrina, I love Old Blind Dogs! Celtic fusion is one of my fave music genres.
How about Panic! At the Disco?! Love their name.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 8:37 am.
Sabrina, I had to name a few bands in my last book, set in Baltimore (where I was born). I should have asked you for a band name!
I named my jazz band after a Baltimore icon – the Bromoseltzer Tower which has a clock tower on which the numbers are substituted for the letters: BROMOSELTZER. I called it the band Bromo Bay, also after the Chesapeake Bay, near where I grew up. But mostly because all the cool band names were taken and a quick Google of Bromo Bay showed nobody was using it, LOL.
I always liked Twisted Sister. It has all those cool sss sounds. Plus Dee Snyder’s hair.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 9:05 am.
Bare Naked Ladies is a great band name. I also think KISS was really on to something picking that name. When names get too weird, I have trouble remembering them, and that’s not good.
And then there’s Spinal Tap.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 9:31 am.
You are asking me to think too creatively today. Um, all I know is that if I were in a band, it would be a rock band, and I would be playing lead guitar.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 10:31 am.
Ok, for band names that I have liked, Dire Straits.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 10:32 am.
Back in high school, a guy friend who loves music introduced me to Iron Maiden. I have to say I don’t listen all that often but love the name. I also love Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
I never wanted to sing in a band. However, I loved playing in orchestras (It’s been many years since I picked up my flute to play). So my dream was to play for the Boston Pops Symphony.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 11:34 am.
I’d be in a Celtic band and call it Gaelic Goddesses. *g*
Now you’ve got me obsessed, Sabrina, so I’ve been looking at band names. We’ll start with some of the Celtic bands—some of them I’ve seen, but I love these names.
Avalon Rising, Barleyjuice, Beer for Breakfast, Bangers and Mash, Cherish the Ladies, Flogging Molly, Granny Smith’s Maggot, The Gutter Pups, Hair of the Dog, Haste to the Wedding, Here be Dragons, Pubcrawler, Quagmyre, Scotch on the Rocks, Shenanigan, Shooglenifty, Tears for Beers, Three Pints Shy, and Wicked Tinkers.
Aren’t those awesome?!
Other fun band names: The All-American Rejects and Depeche Mode.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 11:42 am.
nancyg, I LOVE Rode Hard and Put Up Wet. What a great band name! I don’t like “saliva” so much, though. I wonder how well that name has served them.
Kelly, Celtic Cat Goddesses is great. I could go for that one myself. And while I love The Cougars, surely someone has taken that one. They’d be crazy not to.
Fresh, I don’t know what Fountains of Wayne even is. What store was that? But it makes a great band name!
Jamie, I would definitely want to be in a Celtic band. We can start one together. I like the Whale’s Tale–I have two versions of that song on my Itunes.
Pesky, yep, anything with the word Fabulous in it would be cool. *G*
Lisa H, I adore Bare Naked Ladies. Should have mentioned that one. I like their music. I’d love to sing again somewhere, but then there’s all the planning and the rehearsing … Claudia sings well, too. She and I should start a band! *G*
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 12:15 pm.
AmyS, haven’t heard of The Tragically Hip. What a great name!! And I love Pink Nylon for a band name. Or how about Pink Spandex? *G*
Lori, “Let’s Get Caffeinated” is what I OUGHT to name any band of mine. Because that’s definitely one of my goals in life.
Gannon, I have all of Old Blind Dogs’ albums. Have you ever listened to Enter the Haggis? They’re a really great band.
KarenR, Twisted Sister really does have a great band name. I like Bromo Bay. Definitely different.
Claudia, ah, Spinal Tap. There will never be another. *G*
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 12:20 pm.
Madeline, I like Dire Straits, both the name and the band. I suspect that as all the great “phrases” are taken for band names, band names are going to get increasingly weirder. Kind of like race horse names. Try picking a race horse name that hasn’t been used. That’s what I had to do for my latest book. Ack!
Beth, but Boston Pops Symphony is such a mundane band name.
Seriously, I do like Iron Maiden and Trans-Siberian Orchestra for band names. They’re very cool.
Gannon, Cherish the Ladies is also a fave of mine. I’ve heard some of the others you’ve mentioned, but didn’t like them as well as their names. But I haven’t heard of all of them, so I’m going to have to go do some Itunes sampling now. *G*
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 12:24 pm.
My sister just phoned to say she was going to name her fictitious LP “Cigarettes and Arrogance”.
My band in honor of Liz Taylor “Fatal Violet Eyes”
Sabrina, Fountains of Wayne was a NJ store that sold fountains and other garish lawn decoration. Next time you in the NJ-area, let me show you Tony’s little Italian palace. I don’t know how anyone can get that must statuary on a 25 x 85 lot, but Tony’s has tested the limits.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 12:24 pm.
I like the name HOOPASTANK! not sure on the spelling. I love their song The Reason. I love the word shenanigans Gannon and Shooglenifty is great!!
If i was in a band I would be a mix of Pat Benatar and Pink! Both women have attitude and very powerful songs. Unfortuanately I really can sing a note on key to save my life. Guess thats why I never made it in a rock band.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 12:33 pm.
There are so many cool names, where to begin? At the moment, I’m liking some of the ones my teenager listens to: My Chemical Romance, Bullet for My Valentine, 30 Seconds to Mars, etc. Funny this topic came up, my daughter is asking for an acoustic guitar for her birthday next month and I’ve been teasing her about starting a band called Twisted Pandas!
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 12:34 pm.
Sabrina- You should check out The Tragically Hip, they are a great band. You might have heard one of their bigger songs- New Orleans is Sinking. It was big in the late 90′s. Radio stations stopped playing it for awhile after hurricane Katrina.
I love Pink Spandex! It sounds so 80′s.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 12:36 pm.
Love Wylde Nept Look them up on Facebook and online
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 12:43 pm.
My favorite band lately is The Script. Love their sound.
And you do not me to start a band! Can’t sing or play a note, lol.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 12:44 pm.
Count me in on the Bare Naked Ladies. I also like Art of Noise, Earth Wind and Fire, and Bananarama – cuz that one is just fun to say.
Fresh, lol at Fountains of Wayne. I was always a Fairfield Gardens girl.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 12:49 pm.
Fresh, love, love, LOVE your sister’s band name choice: Cigarettes and Arrogance. That would fit some of our heroes, too. *G* Maybe we should have a band for heroes.
Debbie, Hoopastank is a great, amusing band name! And while I can sing, I really can’t play an instrument (I was never very good on the guitar). I really wish I could. One of my brothers is a killer drum player–that would be cool, I think.
KJ, Twisted Pandas would be a fab band name! Except that people would mix you up with Twisted Sister. *G*
AmyS, I will definitely check them out, especially that song. I’d never heard of it, and I’m FROM New Orleans.
MEZ, Wylde Nept is definitely a unique band name. What do they play?
Nicole, The Script–great name! Is it made up of writers? *G*
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 12:49 pm.
Sabrina, a band that’s popular with some of the kids around here is ICP – Insane Clown Posse. But they’re only 2 people. How is this a posse? I guess there were no sisters in Twisted Sister either.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 12:54 pm.
I’ve always like the band name Full Metal Chicken, though I don’t know what they sing. If I was going to be in a band it would be country rock and it would be called Riding West.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 1:01 pm.
One of the best names I heard was “Ten Pound Bag”. I also like “Barenaked Ladies” and “They Might Be Giants”. My band would be called “The Temple Dogs” and it would perform American and Celtic folk music.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 1:15 pm.
My guitar-playing son is now in a band called MAN MADE MONSTERS. I feel I had some part in this, I suppose. Before that, he was in BLIND RAGE and RICHARD CRANIUM. If you think about it, this was their way of saying DICK-HEAD. They even wore giant condoms on their heads. LOL. Kids, can’t kill them, and you can’t deny them. At least not for long. All these bands played METAL, too loud for my ears.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 1:16 pm.
Oh, and the Soggy Bottom Boys, too!
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 1:19 pm.
Favourite band names are: GooGoo Dolls / Red Hot Chilli Peppers / Wham ;o)
I would have an all girl band which we would sing Pop/Rock and call ourselves the “Pop-ci-curls”
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 1:23 pm.
SuzyQ, Bananarama really IS fun to say. I like that one.
KarenR, Insane Clown Posse is such a great name! But I agree, what’s with the posse for two people? Does that mean that my husband can be my posse? Or my son?
Norma, Riding West sounds perfect for country rock!
Meg V., I love They Might Be Giants, the title AND the band.
Lee, those are great band names! I hope he’s doing well. Man Made Monsters sounds like something that would be popular. And yeah, metal is too loud for me. But then, I never was into metal, even back in the day. *G*
Rita, GooGoo Dolls has always struck me as a great band name, too. And oh, Pop-ci-curls is adorable!
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 1:31 pm.
My favourite band is Rapalje, they play Celtic folk music mostly. And in Dutch it means something like the bad guys your mom always warns about, those that will come to a bad end. So, that’s what I like in a name, the implication that you are warned away from them, but of course, wearing kilts and stuff is what draws me in …
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 1:39 pm.
Sabrina, The Script is an up-and-coming band from Ireland but you can’t tell they’re Irish since they’ve got a smooth pop-rock sound with good lyrics. And I would love to know how they got their name. I should google them and try to find out.
Also, forgot to say congrats to your nephew! That’s a fab accomplishment!
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 1:49 pm.
Rita GooGoo Dolls is my favorite too. Even like their music.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 2:01 pm.
Fave Band: U2
My band’s music: Progressive Electronic
My band’s name: The Flying Eraser-heads
G.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 3:51 pm.
I always loved the names KISS, Motley Crüe, Quiet Riot, Def Leppard, Earshot, Tears for Fears…
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 3:52 pm.
30 Seconds to Mars – good name, good music, singer is awesome
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 3:58 pm.
I like Florence and the Machine’s name and music too. Adele, love love her voice.
My band would be disco. LOL
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 4:15 pm.
Aurian, it’s great when the band name has another significant meaning. I love that!
Nicole, I checked them out. They sound interesting! I might try one of their albums.
Louise, I’m not sure I know what songs the GooGoo Dolls sing. Would I recognize anything.
Genella, what a great band name! I’m not sure what progressive electronic is, though. I listen to some New Age electronic like Enigma. Is that the same thing?
Victoria, I loved the name Quiet Riot. And I do like the hits of those other bands (except I don’t know Earshot).
Christy, that really is a great name! I’ll have to check them out.
JudyF, disco? Really? That would be fun. *G*
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 4:29 pm.
Yup Disco and dance music was my music in the 80′s LOL
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 4:32 pm.
I’ve always liked the name Hootie & the Blowfish. My favorite now is Sun Domingo..I’m biased because it’s my cousin’s band that is now touring Europe with another funny named band… The Pineapple Thief. I do have to say that one of the worst names I’ve ever heard is Hoobastank. I don’t know what it is, but the name just grosses me out.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 5:03 pm.
I like the name “Smashing Pumpkins”. I laughed the first time I heard it. I get a kick out of the christian rock group names like “Jars of Clay”, they always have so much meaning and are quite clever.
In college I was in a Jazz Lab Band that toured, gave workshops to high school jazz bands, and recorded an album. If you watch Dancing With The Stars look for the female Baritone Saxophone player on the end, she looks a little bit like me and has my job.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 5:19 pm.
Sabrina, I was just telling my 18-year-old son about your blog, and he said he would name his band Put This In Your Bagpipe and Smoke It. LOL
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 5:29 pm.
He said maybe that she be a song name–too long for a band name, but it made me laugh.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 5:30 pm.
Make that ‘it’ not ‘she’.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 5:31 pm.
i’m a big fan of the GooGoo Dolls; I also love the name Blink 182…and my all time fav THE BEATLES!!!
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 6:40 pm.
I love the names Barenaked Ladies, GooGoo Dolls, Lady Gaga…as for me in a band…haha…the name would probably “Cat’s Tail in a Door” … unfortunately, that is probably more musical than my voice…
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 7:17 pm.
Kelly, I like The Pineapple Thief! And Sun Domingo isn’t bad either.
MichelleB, yes, I like the band name, Smashing Pumpkins. Don’t know much about their music, though. I do, however, like Smash Mouth!
Gannon, I LOVE that! Very Celtic fusion. *G*
trudy, I enjoy the Beatles, but am not the rabid fan that my hubby is. He even has the session tapes!
wendy p, “Cat’s Tail in a Door” is great! Except that people might come to hear it, expecting a sound much like that. *G*
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 7:24 pm.
I like names that fit the band. Like The Go-Gos and Queen.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 7:32 pm.
Three Dog Night was always a strange name, I thought. We have a local band around here called Dirty White Boys, but kicker is all of the band members are Hispanic. I thought that was pretty funny. I only sing after a few cocktails and a bet, so I guess I’d name my ficticious band… lost the bet.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 8:03 pm.
I love alternative, and one of my favorite bands is The Airborne Toxic.
Hmm, I’ve never wanted to be in a band. And at this point in the day with 2 extra kids, whose father I thought was going to pick them up an hour ago, my brain stopped working.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 8:28 pm.
Three Dog Night is actually an Australian term for a really cold night. As in, its so cold you will need three dogs in the sleeping bag with you to keep warm.
I love Motley Crue as a band name as my father always said “Lets get this motley crew on the road.” anytime we loaded the car for a trip.
I always thought Metallica was a great name for a heavy metal band.
I LOVE The Chieftans and I think the name suits their music.
Rebel Yell would be a great name for a Southern rock band.
My band would be Regency dance band and they would be called The Cut Direct.
Or maybe I would have a nice bar band called Dicked in the Nob (which means ‘crazy’)
Another term I heard from a psychologist friend was ‘Crazy as an outhouse rat.’ I think Outhouse Rats might be a great name for a band.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 8:48 pm.
My favorite band name is Within Temptation. LOVE THEM!! They have been described as symphonic rock. They use a full symphony in their music and also have one with them at concerts. They don’t play very often here in the states because we don’t have many places that can accomadate them. If I were to be in a band I would like to be in one like that one! Although, I have no idea what the name of my band would be.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 9:06 pm.
I too like the names Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dire Straights; also Buffalo Springfield (from a long time ago).
My son likes the name Queens of the Stone Age and Electric Light Orchestra, and would name his band When Do We Get Paid And/Or Laid!
I’m not telling the names of the various bands I used to be in, but these days I’d go for Cut Me a Break, or Plague of Common Sense. I also thought I could name my next band Eric Clapton to see if I could make any REAL money. lol
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 9:23 pm.
Sabrina, I didn’t know that about your nephew! That’s so cool!
My daughter’s in a band called Plainclothes Tracy – http://www.myspace.com/plainclothestracy – named after the comic Dick Tracy. He was first called Plainclothes Tracy because he was undercover and thus in plainclothes.
If I had a band myself, I think I’d call it Two Dogs Down simply because every time I write, the dogs curl up at my feet and fall asleep, and thus there are always Two Dogs Down. Plus, hopefully all of the Two Doors Down people would mistakenly think I was that other band and give me a shot.
This is a parallel plan to my Norah Roberta Famous Author Plan, which never came to fruition though it still holds great potential.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 9:54 pm.
Rachel, Queen is definitely a band with an apt name. Except that only Freddy was gay, so it really only fit the lead singer.
Mikki, “Lost the Bet” sounds like a great name for a band. *G*
Janae, maybe you should name your band “Deadbeat Father.” Oops, was that too harsh?
Louisa, I didn’t know that about Three Dog Night. So cool! And you’ll appreciate this–one of the songs we did when I was in the Young Internationals was “Joy to the World” (“Jeremiah was a bullfrog … ba dup). I still remember the dance moves! Ooh, ooh, The Cut Direct! Perfect Regency band name!!!
Meg, I’ll have to check them out. I like symphonic rock and blends like that.
LindaB, you were in a band? How cool! And Cut Me a Break sounds like a great title, too. You should start up a new one and name it that!
KarenH, I think the Karen Hawkins Famous Author Plan is doing quite well. *G* I knew about your daughter–she’s so talented! And cute, too. My nephew is a very cool guy, actually. I enjoy talking to him.
Posted on March 23, 2011 at 10:47 pm.
Was watching a biography of The Band. Interestingly enough, they went by several other names that didn’t stick and because they were a back up band for so many others who called them the band that they said, “Hey, let’s just go by The Band.”
Posted on March 24, 2011 at 12:00 am.
I always thought ‘Radioheads’ was a great offbeat name for a band. I don’t like the music, just the name. I love classical music, so a chamber orchestra named ‘Mozart’s Minions’ works for me.
Posted on March 24, 2011 at 2:40 am.
MichelleB, I didn’t know that about The Band. My hubby loves them.
Mary, Mozart’s Minions is perfect!
Posted on March 24, 2011 at 7:14 am.
Oops, that’s The Airborne Toxic Event.
LOL, Sabrina, that just might be the case. I should mention that the dad in question, while his day job is middle school science teacher, music is his first love, and he’s in a band.
Posted on March 24, 2011 at 12:55 pm.
Favorite band names : The Beatles, Canned Heat, Bare Naked Ladies, Nine Inch Nails. Red Hot Chili Peppers,
Duran Duran, Wham, Mott The Hoople.
My older-female rock band would be called Grandma’s Glacier Goddesses!
Pat Cochran
Posted on March 24, 2011 at 2:21 pm.
Yea, Sabrina. I think you might recognize “Give a Little Bit.” It’s an old song of theirs but had a lot of play time. Pretty main stream. I probably wouldn’t know who they are if my sons weren’t fans.
Posted on March 24, 2011 at 4:00 pm.
Janae, oh, so he was late because he was with his band, LOL?
Pat, love Grandma’s Glacier Goddesses! Especially when paired with a rock band. *G*
Louise, I know that song, but only as done by Supertramp.
