Accidental Genuis

Decades ago, this weird computer  came out.  No one used it.  But I was dating a man at the time who said, “That’s going to be the next big thing.”  I told some guys in my office about it.  They rolled their eyes and said it had no market share and it never would because it wasn’t compatible with IBM computers.  Still, I thought it was fun to play with.  Several years went by and still no one liked it.  I bought a few shares of stock.  Dumb idea, my husband said.  Well…not so dumb, as it turned out.  If you guessed Apple was the weird computer, you are right.  After many years, it turned out that I was an accidental genius. Ha!

The accidental genius in my family is always the result of people not knowing what the hell they are doing.  Once, on a car trip with my dad, he stopped in every little po-dunk town and bought scratch-offs. I pointed out how the odds were against him, and he said, “Oh, now, they gotta give you few hits, or people won’t buy.”   That flies in the face of statistical logic, but the old man still turned his $30 into $1500 some odd dollars.  He was an accidental statistical genius, as it turns out.

My late sister made gorgeous afghans.  Beautiful yarn and patterns.  She was going to teach herself how to knit but picked up the wrong kind of pattern.  Accidental afghan genius.

In The Revenge of Lord Eberlin (out today, hip hip hooray!) Lily Boudine is in over her head.  She has inherited a title and estate that is falling apart, and even worse, there is a man–Lord Eberlin–who holds her responsible for the ills of his life and wants revenge.  Lily is dumb about how to fight back.   She suggests to her estate agent they spy on Lord Eberlin.  Oh yeah, there’s an idea.  Her agent is aghast, but Lily does it anyway with no thought to how she will  have to rely on someone to spy for her, and if she is caught, there will be hell to pay.  She just reaches for the first dumb idea that pops into her head, and voila!  Genius!  It sets into motion a chain of events that allows her to figure him out and keep her one step ahead of him in their game of cat and mouse in a very complicated dance of seduction.  I hope you enjoy it.

Have you ever made a purse from a sow’s ear?  Have you done some thing that turned out to be accidentally genius that you didn’t know would be genius when you did it?  How about going genius to dumb–have you ever thought something was such a spectacular idea and it didn’t turn out to be at all?

I am so excited that at long last, The Revenge of Lord Eberlin is here, that I am giving another signed copy away today to one lucky commenter!  And, I am giving away a Kindle Fire and $100 gift certificate to someone who helps me get the word out about my book.  Click over to my facebook page to get the details!

  1. Kelly Proellocks says:

I am finding that with me it was attempting to do a degree in psychology. Dumbest move ever since I was not able to understand the statistics part of it no matter how hard I tried.

    1. Julia London says:

Kelly, I always loved psychology, too, but had the same problem.

  2. Alisa says:

I tried taking online college courses, did great at first. The I let it all fizzle out, never even took my first semester exam. My hubby is still commenting on it every so often. Luckily it wasn’t too expensive. That was one very dumb decision. Now I want to try again, but I don’t know how to bring it up. I want to do only online courses, because I know I couldn’t just sit in a classroom anymore. Although, that might be better a motivator for me.

    1. Julia London says:

Ack! Men and their need to “remind” us. I hope you try the online course. I think I could do something like that, but like you, Alisa, I could never go back into the classroom. I’m at that age now that if it was boring, I’d tell myself I don’t have to do it and just go.

  3. Laurie G says:

I gave my daughter a plant for a house warming gift. It turns out she has a green thumb which definitely skipped me. Her house is now loaded with thriving plants. She even has a small compost pile!

    1. Julia London says:

Accidental gardner! I’ve wanted a compost pile but not sure what I would do with the kids and dogs and compost all in the same general area. sounds like a recipe for disaster.

      1. evlqn says:

Julia, at the start of every growing season here in Eugene you can get compost bins VERY cheaply. Ours is a bottomless container with a a locking lid to keep littles and critters out of it. This year we are going to move it closer to the garden area to cut down on the walking back and forth.

  4. Kelly R/W. says:

Yea, definately no accidental genius here. Dysfunction should be our last name. It seems everything we do results in a head scratch. Oh well, ya live and learn, right? Congratulations on The Revenge of Lord Eberlin! It sounds wonderful. I wish you much success!

    1. Julia London says:

      Thank you so much Kelly!

  5. Liz B. says:

I have had dozens of brilliant ideas that didn’t pan out. Book ideas, business ideas, you name it. It wasn’t until about a year ago that I realized that the reason none of them ever came to anything (I rarely even got started on them or if I did I wouldn’t carry through) is that I’m a planner! The fun part for me is planning everything out. I’ll leave the execution to someone else. I used to think I was a huge failure becasue if it, too. Not so! I’m much happier now, researching away and writing out business plans and story outlines and squirreling them away.

My Dad is the one who has million dollar ideas but never does anything with them. He’ll tell us about something that he’s thought of and 6 months or a year later, it’s on store shelves or the process has been announced. He’s a genius idea man but no follow through. (I guess I get it from him!)

    1. Julia London says:

Accidental planner! Liz, have you considered parlaying that planning into some sort of career adventure? I love people who plan. I rely heavily on them :-)

      1. Liz B. says:

I didn’t discover it until I was already signed up to go back to school as a computer science major. I’m thinking that somewhere down the road I can plan new programs and let someone else code them for me!

    2. Haley says:

That’s awesome! I can execute pretty much anything, but can’t come up with one good original idea to save my life.

      1. Liz B. says:

We should get together! I have dozens of book ideas and a plan for a bakery. I didn’t really start saving my ideas until about 6 months ago when I really realized that just because I only want to plan doesn’t mean I won’t meet up with someone who only likes to execute someday. I have a ton of garden plans and unfinished clothing and knitting, too. :)

  6. Renee Pajda says:

I just wanted to say that the covers of your books are awesome!

    1. Julia London says:

Thank you! I think they are too ;-)

  7. LoriHandeland says:

Congratulations on your book release day, Julia!

I’m a rules and recipes and patterns kind of girl, so I don’t have too many accidental genius stories. The only one I can think of is when I don’t have an ingredient for a recipe, sometimes I’ll throw in something else, or something similar. Sometimes, genius! Sometimes, slock.

IV is an accidental parking genius. I say he has a parking fairy. Wherever we go he’ll drive merrily up to the front of the lot, the line, the first row. And there will be his space. Always. It’s maddening.

    1. Julia London says:

It’s like a sixth driving sense. Some people have it. I do not. It seems like every time I arrive at any venue with a parking lot, the only slot available is as far from the door as one can get.

    2. Liz B. says:

The Parking Gods love me, too. My husband marvels every time I get a great spot. He always has to park in the back of the lot and console himself with the idea that he’s getting a little more exercise than I am.

  8. Lisa Hill says:

Congrats on your new release Julia! I can’t wait to read it. I am not an accidental genius although I once came close. I live near Corning, NY and Corning, Inc. is pretty huge around here. They make glass for everything from cookware to the space shuttle…well, anyway several years ago their stock plummeted and I suggested to my husband we buy a bunch. He poo pooed me and said he didn’t want to risk it. I don’t even want to tell you where that stock is today… so next time I have a moment of accidental genius, I will keep my inspiration to myself and go with it.

    1. Julia London says:

Lisa, I feel your pain. But the upside is that you could hold it up to your husband every so often as what could have been. I mean, when you need it. :-) .

Thanks for the good wishes! I am so excited the book is finally out

  9. Kristina says:

My marriage is my single best accidental genius moment. I married my husband after knowing for 5 months. My dad was furious, but after he met him 3 months later, my dad told me, “Kristina, Gary is the best decision you ever made.” He was right. After 15 years of marriage, I still think that. It could have turned out so different!

Sometimes, I think romance books are unrealistic, since the couple frequently know each other for such a short period of time. Then, I remember my own case and think, “Nah. It could happen.” Oh, and I was only 19 when we met, 20 when we married.

    1. Julia London says:

Oh man, that is fairy tale genius! Congratulations and thank you for reaffirming what we write every day :-)

  10. AmyS says:

Happy Release Day!! I have been looking forward to this book for a looong time and can’t wait to read it.

No accidental genius stories here. I usually stay between the lines and don’t stray too far outside the box.

    1. Julia London says:

Thanks so much, Amy. I hope it does not disappoint.

  11. Sheridan says:

    Happy release day!! :D

I was recently a little bit of an accidental genius – and it was with a stock. Not that I have made a ton, but it has been kind of fun listening to The Geezer rub it in to his investment guy that I am better at picking stock than he is. (TOTAL beginner’s luck on my part)

and I have had ideas that did not turn out to be the greatest – but none left any permanent scars or blotches on my permanent record so it’s all good. :D

    1. Julia London says:

Beginner’s luck is the best, Sheridan! Too green to know how brilliant you are, but knowing just enough to be able to rest on those laurels from time to time

  12. Michelle B says:

Happy release day, Julia! Can’t wait to read your book.

I’m more a purse into sows ear. 26 years ago, preparing for the birth of our first child, on a shoe string budget, I looked at so many diaper bags. I thought I had chosen so carefully the large red bag with so many pockets. It was dubbed “The Perfect Bag”. Until the first time I had to take that baby to the doctor’s by myself and realized the handle was too short to put over my shoulder. I was so instantly disillusioned. To this day when I buy a purse, my DH teases me by asking if it is “The Perfect Bag”.

    1. Julia London says:

      Thank you Michelle!

Oh my Lord…I have been on the search for The Perfect Bag for most of my life. They always look sooooo good. And then something turns out to be wrong with them. :-(

  13. Julie says:

Have to say that I purposely waited to buy The Year of Living Scandously until at least the second book, The Revenge of Lord Eberlin was out. :) I’m halfway through the first and I just LOVE Kiera. :D Now, I’m going to be off to buy the second, and should finish it in time for the third, and I’ve talked a friend into going with me to your signing on March 4, and we can’t wait. She is reading The Devil’s Love now.

Must admit to not being an accidental genius of any sort. ;) I guess the thing most recent thing that we really lucked into was when we were looking for a house about 10 years ago, we liked the look of one, and the door just happened to have been left unlocked by the realtor, and we walked around without a person dogging our steps telling us all of the LOVELY features of the home…and we still live there now. ;)

    1. Julia London says:

Julie that’s fantastic! I can’t wait to meet you.

I love how you lucked into your house. The house I described above was one of those not-so-genius moves. I knew the moment I walked in that I loved it. The realtor pointed out all the things wrong but I didn’t care. Many $$$ repairs later and looming $$$ taught me the lesson.

  14. kez says:

Happy dance going on over here Julia! I am so pleased your book is available! Congratulations….

Accidental genius would not be the way to describe life around here. Getting in my own way would be better. I tend to overthink things and then do nothing. Sigh.

Enjoy the glow of your release!

    1. Julia London says:

Thank you Kez! I think a lot of us do that–over think and sort of hog-tie ourselves with it. We should start an Overthinking support group.

  15. Kathleen O says:

Can’t say I have ever had any of the “Genius” moments, but there have been a few not so genius ones…
Good luck with your new book..

    1. Julia London says:

      Thank you Kathleen!

  16. Susan Mallery says:

Congratulations on your latest release, Julia! Fabulous cover. I love that gorgeous yellow dress!

I’ve come up with recipes that I’d consider accidental genius. Sort of a “you got chocolate in my peanut butter” moment. Far from all of the accidents were happy ones, though. I’ve come up with recipes that seemed like a good idea at the time but that turned out TERRIBLE.

In a way, I sort of backed into writing, which turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me. I was going to college for something else entirely, when I took a night school course on writing a romance novel.

    1. Julia London says:

Are you serious? Accidental Bestselling Novelist? I love it!

I once doubled a recipe for jambalaya. Which means I doubled the amount of cayenne pepper. It was inedible.

      1. Susan Mallery says:

Sounds like maybe you doubled just the one ingredient. LOL Youch!

  17. jcp says:

    Congrlations!

    1. Julia London says:

Thank you JCP. I am excited :-)

  18. Haley says:

Happy Release Day! I can’t wait to read it!

My job was actually accidental. When I started college, I couldn’t find a job on campus (and didn’t have a car so the ON CAMPUS part was kind of a deal maker); instead I volunteered for the 4-H office doing data entry. They felt sorry for me, so referred me on to another unit on campus that did educational workshops…I stuck with them which morphed in to being moved to yet another unit (and ultimately interning with them) which did special events. As it turns out, they hired me after I graduated–so here I am in the events industry. Now ask me if my job matches my major…not so much. :)

    Have a great day, ladies.

    1. Julia London says:

Ditto here, Haley. I was a government major. I actually did that for awhile and hated it. And I thought, I can. not. do. this. for the rest of my life. So voila, here I am!

  19. dbrown3400 says:

Congrats on your book, Julia. Heading on over to FB soon. *g* One time of turning a sows ear into that silk purse happened 35 years ago at a baccarat table in Las Vegas. It was a $20 minimum table and I’d started with my $20 and was going to play until that ran out. I ran it up to $500 and nervously decided to let it ride. I picked up my $1000 and got away from that table in a hurry, my gambling done for the trip.

Don’t want to ruin that upbeat story with the down times.

    1. Julia London says:

What a great return on $20!! That’s so much fun, a great memory :-)

  20. Amy in C-ville says:

I don’t know how genius I am at it, but my entire career is accidental.

    1. Julia London says:

Amy you qualify for accidental genius-ness no matter what :-)

  21. evlqn says:

When I was working as an in-home caregiver mu client’s son came over for lunch every day and we would watch the market report together. Finally after watching for several months I told him he should invest in Sun Microsystems because it was going to hit big but he disagreed. I didn’t have the money to invest so I couldn’t. Does Java ring any bells here people? Yep, Sun Microsystems.

Shortly after my dad died Mom was trying to spend all of his insurance money as fast as possible. We tried to get her to go in with us to buy some property for sale with two houses on it and ten acres of farm land right in town. One day we noticed the for sale sign was down and part of the property was sectioned off for some reason. The reason turned out to be the school district bought part of the property for a new K-8 school. The school district paid over three million dollars for the land. That could have been our money Mom.

    1. Julia London says:

      Ouch, Evlqn! That’s more a near-miss accident.

      1. evlqn says:

At moments I am still quite annoyed but, oh well!

  22. MAY says:

    Congrats on your new release!

For me, it was pharmacy school… Never thought about it at all in high school and didn’t apply till the last minute deadline… I got in surprisingly…

    1. Julia London says:

      Thank you, May :-) .

I took my GRE’s for graduate school much the same way. My memory is that I decided on a friday to go to graduate school and took the test on a monday with no prep. I am sure that is not even remotely accurate, but that’s the way I remember it – very fast decision and no prep. And still, I got in. Which says a lot about the state of education today, LOL

  23. carla carlson says:

Yay! On your book out today!
I found that I am an accidental genius in decorating and styling. I go to goodwill find a piece, strip it paint it and it turns into a piece that others love, little do they know it was a $20 piece. People have me decorate for them, even shop for clothes with them. An essemble one top from a certain store, try another for skirt, look around find shoes and accessories..all different stores, all perfect for each other. People have told me that’s an art. Even when I go to goodwill find some clothes people are amazed at how well it looks together along with my finds.

    1. Julia London says:

I want that kind of accidental talent! That is worth its weight in gold

  24. Stephanie Wottrich says:

Turns out I am an accidental genius at the outdoors… I went from doing a tiny bit of camping and fishing, to when I met and subsequently married my husband, I began doing a bit of hunting… I took to it naturally, and now instruct youth on hunting and conservation of our land, and have been nominated for several hunting awards… :)

    1. Julia London says:

Stephanie, how cool! I am always amazed at the things we learn about our goddesses. Such a lovely diverse group

  25. Bridgett says:

This sounds so good, I can’t wait to read it!!

    1. Julia London says:

      Thank you Bridgett!

  26. alison says:

I am really looking forward to reading this book! I think the only thing I can say I’m an accidental genius at is in the area of fashion. I have a very critical eye when it comes to colors and patterns, and I throw outfits together all the time and get a lot of compliments. It’s fun!

    1. Julia London says:

I love those stylist shows. I would never know what to put with what and I am always amazed at how they do it. You have another accidental talent I want.

I hope you enjoy the book!

  27. Ally Chew says:

Oh my. My entire life is accidental. I applied to a graduate school on a whim, knowing I had applied and been accepted to another school, but ended up going to the second university because they offered me a freaking huge scholarship. While I was there, I had a TA-ship, and met my husband-to-be in my class as one of my students. After the school year was over and he asked me out, I only went because of something my mother said, and now we’ve been married over 21 years. My husband’s company moved three months before we got married to a small city I had never even visited, but now I can’t imagine living anywhere else. To top it off, less than two years ago, my husband got me a silly little stick dulcimer as a birthday present, which got me on a roll with instruments and and a reinvigorated love of music, and now I’m in four musical groups and we’re starting to get paid for our gigs! Crazy! Life is crazy and exciting and fun and everyone needs to learn to enjoy the ride :)

I love your books Julia! Keep up the good work and I look forward to reading this new one.

    1. Julia London says:

Ally you might win the award for the most accidental genius moments. You sound like a lot of fun.

      Thanks for the good wishes!

  28. alisha woods says:

Can’t wait to read this book. I really like the cover.

    1. Julia London says:

Thank you Alisha. I do, too :-)

  29. Cindy C. says:

I am an accidental genius when it comes to pasta sauce. I can make any kind of sauce out of what we have around or be inspired by something new I see at the market. They always turn out fabulously. This does not translate to fish, meat, or dessert, as I need a recipe to strictly follow for any of those or the food will most likely be inedible. My theory is that I love pasta so much that I just instinctively know how to showcase it.

    1. Julia London says:

And you are making me drool at the same time. I love different sauces for pasta.

  30. Kay says:

Can’t wait until I can get my hands on this book! Not an accidental genius, but hey, it may still happen yet! Right?! Love all your books!!

    1. Julia London says:

Thank you Kay! And yes, it may still happen. You can only see it in hindsight, of course.

  31. Jessica says:

How exciting!! I can’t wait to read this!

    1. Julia London says:

      Thanks Jessica!

    1. Julia London says:

I assume you mean you are not an accidental genius, Susan :-) .

  32. Claudia Dain says:

I am an accidental genius when it comes to cooking, which is flat out hysterical since I don’t enjoy cooking in the least. I’m genius at foods that have a blend of flavors—spaghetti sauce, chili, meatloaf and meatballs, stews, soups, tuna salad, potato salad, egg salad. That kind of thing. I have no idea why.

    1. Julia London says:

I don’t know how to cook, but I wish I did. But it works to my advantage — it keeps me eating whole foods because I don’t know how to do anything else. You know…like a caveman, LOL

  33. Gail Nichols says:

The only thing that comes to mind is my husband!!One day I was watching an old episode of “The Rosanne”Show and they had a scene where all the other chracters were complementing Rosanne on how wonderful her husband was and she said “Do you think he came that way” and preceeded to compare him to a donut on the table in front of her. She said first you have to get rid of the stuff from the beer commercials and she broke off a small piece and then you have to get rid of all the stuff his mother did to him and she took a huge bite out of the donut and she had a small piece left anshe said that’s what you have left to work with.I took my small piece and made a beautiful wedding cake out of it and we have been happily married for 17 years:)

    1. Julia London says:

Ah, Gail, that is so sweet. He must be a real keeper.

  34. Suzanne Enoch says:

Hm. On occasion I’ll come up with a crazy plot twist idea that ends up nicely tying the entire book together, but otherwise while I’m frequently accidental, I’m rarely a genius. *g*

Yay for The Revenge of Lord Eberlin! My copy should be arriving in the mail today!!

    1. Julia London says:

Suzanne, come sit by me. I am the same type. And thanks for ordering Eberlin!!

  35. Candy Gorcsi says:

Hmm Nope no genius here, accidental or other wise, my motto should be “if it can go wrong it will”. Now I think my husband on the other hand is a genius, if he doesn’t know it he’ll wing it and figure it out and it always works out fabulously!

    1. Julia London says:

I guess if you can’t be an accidental genius you ought to at least marry one, right?

  36. Katie N. says:

don’t have an accidental genius story, but I would love to win the book- I loved The Year of Living Scandalously and can’t wait to read The Revenge of Lord Eberlin :)

    1. Julia London says:

That’s great katie – thank you for posting and for the kind words!

  37. Nit Witty says:

Got the book last night on my kindle!! Wahoo!

About the only accidental genius move I made was having my unplanned daughter. I went to the doctor to discuss the IUD or the pill because I had decided that I didn’t want to have another one after trying for a couple months and “nothing” happening. As part of the exam, they gave me a pregnancy test. Viola!
She graduated last year with a fat academic scholarship to a great college and is excelling in her pre-med course load.
    My accidental genius. :D

    1. Julia London says:

Nit Witty, that is a fabulous accident. Congratulations on that one! Thanks for the support, too. I really appreciate it

  38. Larisa says:

Think my accidental genius is making sparkling lemonade out of life’s lemons. Have gone from being Type A+, wound way too tight, to going with the flow. Happy to be aging this way and not in the reverse order.

    1. Julia London says:

I know what you mean, Larisa. It’s a much better existence, LOL.

  39. CateS says:

I love your cover… Not so much an accidental anything.. But I do have a good sense of direction… which drives my hubby to distraction somethings….

    1. Julia London says:

Thanks Cate! Glad you are keeping your husband on his toes

  40. CateS says:

    Um… not much of a speller either…
that would be to distraction “sometimes”…`

    1. Julia London says:

      We guessed ;-)

  41. Na S. says:

I’m been an accidential genius in the kitchen. I don’t cook often and often do so trial by error. They are edible even good sometimes.

    1. Julia London says:

Hooray! As long as the balance for “good sometimes” is better than “bad sometimes,” right?

  42. Brooke B. says:

Congratulations on Lord Eberlin!! I’ve been DYING waiting for it to come.

I am an accidental genius when it comes to directions. I’m not sure how or why, but whenever I must travel to someplace new, I only need to glance at directions occasionally on my way there, but I never have to on my way home. I never get lost, and I rarely never get turned around. It’s like an extra sense, and I really wish it would catch on with my husband.

    1. Julia London says:

Thanks, Brooke! I hope it is worth the wait.

Isn’t it interesting how some people have that sense of direction and others don’t? Thank goodnes I have some of it, because I have a sister who has no sense of direction whatsoever. It’s like she’s in lala land every time she walks out her door.

  43. Karen says:

I’m not an accidental genius at anything! I just remember almost anything I read and can follow directions very well :)

    1. Julia London says:

      An accidental navigator :-)

  44. SuzyQ says:

    Happy Release Day Julia!

I have from time been an accidental cooking genius. That’s when I don’t have all the ingredients for a dish so just substitute something else and it comes out great! Problem is, I never write anything down so I have no idea what I did. I guess that counts from going to genius to dumb.

    1. Julia London says:

THanks Suzy Q! I like how you complete the full circle with your genius.

  45. Madeline Hunter says:

I had the idea to start a business importing Latin American crafts. Started it, sourced it, and even had some success with it. Then I learned the incredible amount of time it took to wholesale and rep a line of items. OMG. I wasn’t even making minimum wage on a per hour basis. Looking back, I have no idea what I was thinking to get involved in that. So maybe this was reverse accidental genius.

    1. Julia London says:

Madeline, something else I never knew about you! I would have loved to have seen the crafts.

You haven’t figured out your hourly wage writing, have you? Don’t :-)

  46. Gwyn says:

Yes, on both counts, but the details shall remain mine own. Congrats on the release. I like the heroine already (for reasons that shall remain sunrevealed, as well, but have something to do with those other details) ;-)
    Looking forward to reading it.

    1. Julia London says:

      Ooh, intriguing, Gwyn! Thank you!

  47. Maureen says:

I find that I have better than expected and worse than expected outcomes when I am trying new recipes. Congratulations on the new book!

    1. Julia London says:

      Thanks Maureen!

  48. Chelsea B. says:

I am more of a thought it would be a good idea but it wasn’t kinda girl, haha ;-)

    1. Julia London says:

      hahaa! Erin, too funny :-)

  49. Erin S says:

Hi Julia!! Congrats on the new book! I can’t wait to read it!

I can’t really say I’m an accidental genius at anything yet, but hopefully the company I work for will make it big and I will be able to say I was there from the beginning! :)

    Happy book b-day!

    Erin

    1. Julia London says:

thank you! And good luck to your company!

  50. Elizabeth Schroedle says:

I guess that I’m an “accidental genius” in that I can find my way around any city. When I visited Athens, Greece in 2004, we got turned around due to all the construction for the Olympics. I found our way to the Acropolis and from there was able to chart our walk back to our hotel. I never believed that we were lost for 1 minute.

    1. Julia London says:

Another accidental navigator genius. It’s a natural talent, I think.

  51. Mary in NY says:

Well, if I am an accidental genius, then I must be an “unaware accidental genius”. Thank you for the wonderful stories and the give aways!

    1. Julia London says:

You are very welcome, Mary. Thank you for stopping by the goddess blogs.

  52. Quilt Lady says:

Congrats on your new release and it sounds just awesome, can’t wait to read it.

No accidental genius stories here. I try not to plan anything out because I want follow through on them I have pieced some quilt that came out totally different then I thought they would.

    1. Julia London says:

Thanks, Quilt lady! You didn’t say if your accidental quilts came out better than you thought or worse :-)

  53. Barbara Elness says:

I think the only thing I’ve ever done by accident that turned out very well was buying my town house when the market was very low and when I was ready to sell it, it had appreciated to over 3 times what I paid for it – and I sold it, made a ton of profit and moved to another state where prices were cheaper and paid cash for a house with a pool. I certainly didn’t plan all that when I bought the place, I just wanted someplace to live. :D

    1. Julia London says:

Ooh, accidental real estate genius! That’s the kind of genius I want to become.

  54. Freshechelle says:

I can’t believe I’ve missed all the good stuff today.

Can’t recall any accidental genius moments but I know I’ve had them and I’m sure they were amazing. (I’m channeling my inner Lady Catherine DeBurgh, can you tell?)

Despite not having any pithy bon mots to add to today’s discourse, I just wanted to pop in and wish you a very happy new release day!!! Gotta go download now. Later.

    1. Julia London says:

Thank you Lady Catherine! Glad that you had a chance to stop by

  55. Sabrina Jeffries says:

Nope, except for in books, I rarely have the accidental genius gene. I don’t know why. I don’t win prizes either. Sometimes when I go to regional conferences, I’ll buy 20 tickets and not win a single thing I bid on. Sheesh! I have no luck outside of writing. Maybe I used it all up on my career!

P.S. I cannot WAIT to read the Revenge of Lord Eberlin. I loved the first Hadley Green book.

    1. Julia London says:

Thank you, Sabrina! I hope you like it

  56. bn100 says:

Congratulations on your new book! The book sounds very good. I can’t recall any accidental genius moments.

    1. Julia London says:

      thank you Bn100 :-) .

  57. Cathy P says:

Definitely no geniuses in mine or my husband’s families (including us). I remember one time we thought about starting our own business selling waterbed supplies. That idea never got off the ground, and I can’t see that it ever would as I look back now.

    1. Julia London says:

So in a roundabout way you were accidental geniuses by not starting the business? If that were me, I would take that and run with it :-)

  58. Charlene says:

    Hi Julia,

I am trying so hard to win your book! I am so excited that it has finally come out!

    1. Julia London says:

Thank you Charlene! I am excited to. I will do a random draw in the morning.

  59. Robin D says:

I went to college with one career goal in mind, then found out I did not like the reality of the job. I did learn not to be single-focused and to take other things into account when making decisions. I liked your post!

  60. donna ann says:

I hate reading legal documents, unfortunately it comes with the management part of my job & my boss regularly has me doing it — lease documents, sales or partnering agreements, etc. reading those things gives me a major headache and confuses the dickens out of me, need to read it over several times before I have a clue even after over a dozen years of doing it.

  61. Linda says:

No genius tendencies or traits; known or unknown :p
I’m a very average sort of person. Occasional flashes of genius sure would be nice!

  62. Mary Preston says:

The genius to dumb sounds like me. I have Wile E Coyote moments. “I AM A GENIUS”

  63. Lorraine Hill says:

I do not have a genius bone in my body accidental or otherwise. Wish I did but….
