I watched the Oscars. I hadn’t seen most of the movies nominated, but now I’m desperate to see The Artist. A silent film won best picture, best actor, best director, best music, best costumes?! This I must see. I also haven’t seen The Iron Lady, starring Meryl Streep, and which garnered her 17th nomination (SEVENTEEN!?) and her 3rd win. I’m not that interested in politically based movies, but now I must see this movie.
I did see Bridesmaids, up for a few awards, no wins (that I can remember), but I didn’t see what all the fuss was about. In my opinion, it was okay, not fabulous.
I’ve seen The Help and I think it should have won everything. It was stupendous in every way.
I haven’t seen Hugo, but it won a bunch of awards and now I’m dying to see it.
I haven’t seen Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and I still don’t think I want to see it.
I saw Midnight in Paris, and it was very good. I enjoyed every second of that movie. It won an Oscar for best original screenplay.
I haven’t seen Beginners, but Christopher Plummer (Baron Von Trapp) won his first Oscar at the age of 82. Congrats, Mr. Plummer!
I haven’t seen My Week with Marilyn, and I really wasn’t sure I was going to, but then they showed so many good clips at the Oscars that now I want to.
I saw Moneyball and loved it. Very, very creative and ambitious movie.
I haven’t seen The Descendants and I’m still on the fence about it. Ditto War Horse.
I haven’t seen Warrior, but I feel like I want to, except then I get nervous about it. I feel the same way about Albert Nobbs and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
So, let’s talk movies, the Oscars, what you’ve seen, whether you liked it, whether you hated it, and what you thought of Angelina’s leg (which now has it’s own Twitter feed, up to 12,000 followers, last I heard).
I haven’t seen any of those movies but I want to see Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. It looks like a brilliant and moving movie.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 5:19 am.
If you haven’t seen The Help, please, do yourself a favor and see it. It was brilliant.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:01 am.
I am not a huge movie goer. I am a fan of books that are turned into movies (although the movie never does it justice.) That being said I haven’t seen The Help. I know I should. I haven’t heard anything but good reviews on it. I did see the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. There was one part in it that almost had me walking out. But I stayed the course and ended up loving the movie. Theen I became a little obsessed. I read all the books. With my obsession still thriving I went to see the movie again. Yea, I loved Dragon Tattoo. Rooney Mara was incredible. Daniel Craig is never hard to look at either! Unlike Angelina. She is waaaay to skinny. I think she flashed a leg to take attention off of her gaunt self. Typical ‘look at me, look at me’ Hollywood. And typical lunacy with the leg having its own Twitter feed. Have a great day!
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 6:54 am.
Okay, this is interesting. Number One Son told me in no uncertain terms NOT to see Dragon Tattoo. He said it was grim and depressing and that I’d hate it.
Now I don’t know what to think!
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:04 am.
I keep hearing the word “disturbing” when people talk about the movie and the book. I’m uncomfortable being disturbed.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:40 am.
Claudia…upon further reflection it was a dark movie. Upon even further reflection it didn’t have a great HEA. I think it was just a EA! Certainly not an ending any one of you Goddesses would write. I hope that helps, because now I am more confused of my own self ;o)
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:41 am.
That settles it. I’m going to pass on Dragon Tattoo. Thanks, goddesses!
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 3:54 pm.
Agreed on Angelina. Serious, ten pounds would do her a world of good.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:26 am.
I saw The Help, and am now I feel the same way about The Artist and Hugo–can’t wait! Most of the others I will likely watch, except perhaps for Warhorse. I’m not sure why I’m feeling resistant to that one!
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 7:35 am.
War Horse was one I was dying to see, but it keeps getting iffy reviews. I know I’ll see it and I predict I’ll love it, but I’m not desperate to see it because of those dang reviews!
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:05 am.
Not seen it either… but did hear that it’s not a downer ending…
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:06 am.
My boss saw it and she loved it
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:33 pm.
Bridemaids – agree with you, Claudia. Funny, but not brilliant.
The Help – loved it but it felt more white guilt to me than the book did.
Moneyball – need to see the whole thing, saw part on a flight but love baseball.
Angelina’s Leg (great band name) – I can’t be the only SEP reader who now calls Angie “Jade”. What a caricature she’s become.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 8:06 am.
White guilt. LOL The way I look at guilt in any form, if *I* didn’t do it, then *I* don’t feel guilty about it.
I live a simple life.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:06 am.
I like that attitude. I think I’ll adopt that.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:01 pm.
I’m not a huge fan of the Oscars. The only movie I saw was War Horse.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 8:07 am.
Well, come on, spill! What did you think of War Horse?
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:07 am.
So far I haven’t seen any of the movies that were up for best picture and I don’t know when I will get around to them. I saw the last Harry Potter and loved it. I also saw a 3D movie recently and can’t remember what it was, couldn’t have too memorable.
Angelina has beautiful legs to go with the rest of her beautifulness. Did she get the reaction she was going for? Absolutely. Otherwise she would not have worn a dress split up to her nether regions and posed as she did – twice. I hadn’t watched the Oscars in years and I have no idea why I decided to watch them this year but I did enjoy them.
I am going back to bed now, our 15 yr. old snuck out to she his main squeeze because she is leaving for several days. He may be living under the deck when she returns. Not looking forward to the talk with her parents either.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 8:24 am.
Oh, boy. I don’t envy you.
Angelina and the leg—it was more than twice. It was all night long. And at the podium? What on earth…?
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:08 am.
Something about getting up at 3:23am just puts you right off the happy train without a conductor. It took such a long time to get back to sleep, especially when Binks, our cat, decided that 4:05 was an excellent time to go for a walk. So would I please haul it to the door, Mother Nature calls. On an up note the usual snarky behavior from Darius was absent this morning. Maybe it was the certainty that getting his meager affairs in order had a positive effect on him.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 12:27 pm.
I’m not a fan of books being turned into movies. I’ve only had disappointment when that happens as I always love the book a lot more than the movie. I like when they write screenplays for movies and if it’s something good I’ll watch that. But if you give me a choice between the movie or the book the book is going to win every single time. A lot of the movies you talked about are books turned into movies so I’ll be buying the book but not seeing the movie.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 8:28 am.
I thought it was interesting that they give two Oscars for writing–one an adaptation from a book, the other for original screenplay. Those really are two different kinds of writing.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:11 am.
I actually saw a good portion of the movies this year. I was suprised.
I liked Moneyball, The Help and was grossed out by Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
I love family films but had no draw to War Horse or Hugo, they both looked like they were going to be sad, and came out at Christmas…Christmas doesn’t need sadness.
I thought Angelina and Brad looked happy. That’s all you can wish for any couple you don’t know. She’s a bit thin, but that’s her business, I’m sure several million people have been willing to tell her to eat a sandwich. She seems healthy so maybe this is her healthy weight.
Now…if you want crazy, Sean Young was at it again…
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 8:32 am.
Pesky, that’s it exactly. That’s why we didn’t see War Horse or Hugo at Christmas. I want happy and bright for Christmas!
Ooh, what did Sean Young do? I thought she had herself together by now!
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:13 am.
Zactly.
So the hot mess apparently felt unlike the rest of us riff raff she would be able to go to the Governors Ball after the Oscars sans invite.
And much like you and myself showing up sans invite was summarily escorted away.
Unlike you and myself, Ms. Young apparently felt that the best defense was to go all Tyson on the bouncers…which got her arrested.
So of course now she’s demanding an apology from the academy for being treated so harshly.
Nora Desmond is ready for her closeup Mr. DeMenile.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:33 am.
OMG!!! That poor woman!! It’s got to be HORRIBLE to have eaten of the golden Hollywood apple to have it rot in your hand.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:28 am.
I’m with you on the Help. Stupendous! I also enjoyed Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I was disappointed in Moneyball.
I definitely want to see the Artist, Extremely Loud and Marilyn.
I didn’t get the leg thing. Were the guys who won making fun of her afterward? It was all kind off odd.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 8:42 am.
Yes, that’s it on the leg. She kept taking this pose, leg exposed, hand on waist, all down the red carpet. Then she gets up to present and takes the same pose! According to eye witness reports, the whole room gasped and murmured because it was so inappropriate. This was not a photo-op moment–this was a please present the award moment. Then the three guys who won came up and adopted the same pose—and the room erupted in laughter.
It was *the* Oscar moment of the night.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:16 am.
The Help-
LOVED LOVED LOVED IT! I’ve watched it quite a few times already. It resonates with me as I’ve been ‘the help’ and know that gut wrenching love for “your kids” that grip you and kick you in the heart when it’s time to go. I remember Deepka Chopra saying something like “you relive the most tramatic event in your life over and over”. it’s like I lose my twins all over again. and…now I’m sniffling. sorry.
My Week With Marilyn-
It was a sad look at a smidgen of Marilyn’s fragile life. The Prince and The Showgirl was never a fav of mine. I always thought Laurence Olivier’s Prince was incredibly mean and why would that kind of man even want a showgirl for a bride? I was a very young teen when I first saw the film and it still bothers me,
The writer of the film obviously (to me) felt the same way. The actor on the set was a bully and made Marilyn even more fragile. It was beautiful and moving and sweet and gentle.
The Descendants-
They did it! Somehow they made George Clooney become this sad sack of emotion. gone was the smirky grin that usually accompanies his movies. I really had no idea he could act that well.
The movie is filled with funny but not laugh out loud bits. I tended to give a smirky grin when a bad character got served. Another emotional movie but in a life affirming stick-to-your-principles kind of of way.
And so ends my reviews. I haven’t seen any of the others but want to see:
The Artist
Hugo
Moneyball
Beginners (hello! Christopher Plummer is one of our national treasures!)
I don’t even want to start on the LEG! that annoyed me to no end and I’m glad the winners she annouced mocked her on stage!
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 8:53 am.
I’ll probably be in the minority here. I haven’t seen any of the Oscar winning movies. Except for big action flicks, I usually wait until the movie is released on a cable network. I know Bridesmaids comes out this month. I’ll likely watch it. Of the others you name, I’ll likely watch Moneyball and The Descendents. I don’t believe I’ll ever watch Extremely Load and Incredibly Close.
I watched the Oscars and thought it was a good show. The famous leg shot was humorous to us. Then, it quickly turned sad. It seemed to me that she was upset when people made fun of her. I’m sorry if she was upset; but, honestly, it was way weird behavior.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:25 am.
The leg. There is just something so sad about the leg.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:34 am.
You know, that’s why I wasn’t eager to see My Week with Marilyn—-The Prince and The Showgirl is the only Marilyn Monroe movie I loathe. Olivier was such a jerk and so cold in that part; they were so mismatched and had no chemistry and the plot was dreary. Anyway, because it’s about that movie, I didn’t want to see *this* movie. But now I might. It looks very well acted and I think Kenneth B is brilliant.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:28 am.
This year I was mostly disappointed in the nominees. I saw Moneyball, good but worthy of best picture? The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo, I had to walk out the viscous rape scene did not need to be so graphic and actually painful to watch. Hugo, probably got the attention because of Scorese .. but best, no. I loved The Help, great picture, yes, I could see that. Bridesmaids hilarious, but not best picture. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, a beautiful ache that touches the heart, I could see that being nominated. Midnight In Paris, an original. Those are the ones I have scene. I want to see Iron Lady and The Artist. Albert Nobbs, The Descendants holds no interest. My Week With Marilyn and War Horse, I knew would be rentals. I tell people must see, wait for matinee, wait for rental, or wait for it to come on tv.
Angelinas Leg, I keep thinking there was something wrong with her body, did you notice how breakably thin her arms were? She even looked different than last year, Thompson she had work done. Who do you think was best and worst dressed… The Dictator gets worse dressed, best dressed I have a few, but they were not spectacular.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:35 am.
Oh, Christopher Plummer… What a beautiful man, I have had a love affair with him since I was young and he was in The Sound of Music. He still takes my breath away when he talks.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:38 am.
She did look different. And her knee was bony. I don’t care if people say she needs the weight for the cameras. She looked too thin for even that camera.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:03 am.
Midnight in Paris was so original and so beautifully done. I really enjoyed that movie. You know a Woody Allen movie is going to push boundaries, and I love that.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:30 am.
Personally, I rarely ever watch the award shows anymore. I see all of the gorgeous and fugly clothes of the attendees the next day and usually I have no desire to see the movies that are nominated.
I come from a family of baseball fans and married a baseball fan, so we did see Moneyball and I thought it was a great film. Very edgy for Brad, and he was amazing in it. However, I still don’t know if it was necessarily ‘Oscar’ worthy.
I have read all of Steig Larsson’s books about Lisbeth Salander. They are very dark and disturbing, but really, REALLY good. There are so many twists and turns. My only complaint is that I am not Swedish, so trying to wrap my mind around some of the names of places and people is a little difficult for me, but the story is very moving. I would like to see the Swedish version first, then the Americanized one.
I want to see The Artist and The Iron Lady. I also want to see Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, but I know that I will be bawling my head off at some point because that was such and emotional time for so many…
I have not seen The Help yet, and really want to, but I’m waiting until my daughter and I have some time together to watch it where there is no fear of being interrupted by our hubbies.
I usually watch, and love, the movies that rarely make Oscar watch lists.
I do like some Indie films (Driving Lessons with Julie Walters is hysterical!), and I like some that are on their radar (I loved The King’s Speech and The Queen), but I usually love the ones that escape their notice like Harry Potter, Bedtime Stories, Real Steel…
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 9:52 am.
And, Angelina…she truly has a lovely face, but her arms and hands are what terrify me for her. She has always been thin, and some people just are naturally thin. However, her arms and hands look gaunt to me. The posing with her legs looked odd to me, I have to admit. There was just no need for it. On the flip side, I thought that Jessica Chastain looked absolutely lovely. Glenn Close was gorgeous in that suit dress. And, Bo Derek….wow! That was a beautiful and classy dress and she looks remarkable. Then again, there is Kelly Osbourne–her dress was great, and she has got a lovely figure, but WHAT is the child doing with her hair?! Seriously?? It’s like she was trying to copy Paula Deen and it went purple instead of blue tint….and I love my Paula!
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:15 am.
Yeah, Kelly O with her lavender hair. But you know, I actually think it looks good on her, all that white skin. She looks better with lavender hair than with brassy blond.
Glenn Close looked AMAZING! And so did Meryl S. Beautiful, mature women.
Jessica Chastain took my breath away. That dress was a work of art.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:35 am.
There’s definitely a hierarchy in Hollywood, which I find incredibly annoying. They rarely, if ever, nominate a Ron Howard film. Why is that? He does great stuff. There are the favorites and then there are the Others, who do great work but aren’t…what? Part of the “in” crowd?
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:33 am.
The only movie I’ve seen that was even mentioned at the Oscars was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which I thoroughly enjoyed even though it was rough in spots. I do want to see Moneyball because I’m a huge baseball fan and The Descendants because I understand Clooney does such a marvelous acting job in the film. War Horse is a maybe.
I didn’t watch parts of the Oscars because The Walking Dead was on during an hour of the show. haha
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:02 am.
I taped the Oscars. LOL No way can I stay awake that late.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:36 am.
I’m surprised I stayed awake that long as well. Usually I’m sound asleep by that time.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:45 am.
First things first. DUTTON! Squeeeeeeeee! Okay, got it out of my system. No- wait. Squeeeeee! Okay, no, seriously, now I’m good.
I saw Moneyball, and liked it very much. I think it’s one of Brad Pitt’s best performances. He was so *real*, not a pretty boy or smooth Romeo.
I also saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, for about 1/2 hour. Then I turned it off. I have a low tolerance for dark, life-is-crap-then-you-get-raped-stolen-from-and-use-eye-for-an-eye-methods-of-revenge. Blech. Even the mystery of a possible murder couldn’t tempt me to keep it on.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:05 am.
Dana, my Number Uno Dutton groupie, how I love you.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:37 am.
Not a big movie goer.. But have seen ‘the leg’ mocked in so many places.. even Hillery Clinton.. which may have been a photo-shop by someone else completely..
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:10 am.
I haven’t seen that! Must go look that up . . .
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:38 am.
The only thing I have seen so far is “The Help” and I loved it. It should have been called “The Help” awards show instead of the Oscars. What I would like to know is what was with Angelina Jolie and the leg thing?
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:24 am.
I was hoping The Help would sweep the Oscars the way The Artist did. I guess I need to see The Artist so I can understand why.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:39 am.
I saw The Help, which I loved much more than the book. Warhorse is so brilliant and touching, I highly recommend it. Dark, but ultimately uplifting. I would say the same about Extremely Loud.
Not going to see the Artist. No idea why I’m so resistant, but there it is. I do want to see Marilyn and The Descendents.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:31 am.
You loved the movie The Help more than the book? Wow. That’s really saying something. I thought both were brilliant, truly one of the best adaptations I’ve ever seen, right up there with GWTW.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 10:40 am.
I really didn’t love the book.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 5:26 pm.
Sadly, I haven’t been to the movies in a while, so I haven’t seen any. I do want to see The Artist now. I don’t think I’ve ever sat through a silent movie. Knowing my dh, he will provide his own dialog.
And I am so happy Christopher Plummer won! It’s about time!
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:07 am.
I’m really interested in seeing The Artist. It seems to be universally loved.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 3:55 pm.
My son and I read Hugo Cabret years ago and loved it, but squirrelly reviews about it being changed from the book made us decide to wait for DVD. We loved The Help, and we also really liked Moneyball. I thought Bridesmaids was crass and slow, but one of the funniest scenes EVER was when the one lady passed … something … and said, “to be honest, I don’t know which end that came out of.” OMG. I also thought the leg was crass. I’m not a fan of hers to begin with, but I don’t think that leg was as badass as she thought it was. It was too efforted.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:08 am.
Ditto on Bridesmaids. Ditto on the leg.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 3:56 pm.
I saw The Help just after “reading” the audio book version, which was performed by four actresses – one being Octavia Spencer. That was the first audio book in a long time where the readers completely blew me away. I have to say I liked that version much more than the book. (I did not read the printed book, so my opinion might be different had that been my experience.) They all did wonderfully in the movie and it was good.. I just wanted more, but isn’t that always the case with adaptations?
Other than that, the one film I saw that I wanted to win did so: The animated short “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” it is BRILLIANT and still gets me teary eyed at the beauty. If you have not seen it, you can find it on the net, or they were offering it for free on iTunes.
I didn’t watch the Oscars, but I did keep up with who won via my entertainment obsessed FB friends.
The photos and comments about Angelina’s leg made me laugh – and the photoshop meme going around does make me chuckle. Poor Angelina. lol
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:10 am.
Poor Angelina. I’m not sure she even understands she’s a poor
Angelina.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 3:57 pm.
I watch the Oscars to laugh at what’s get selected. Some years they have good choices and some years, it’s a wonder how the movies they select came about.
Most of the movies I watch don’t get nominated unless it’s for special effects. Last year was the year for Super Heroes. Chris Hemsworth deserves an Oscar for his half naked scene in Thor.
I did want to see Moneyball. I love baseball and have seen quite a few of the ones made about it. As well I’ve actually been to see an A’s game. It’s a lot easier to get into to see them play than the SF Giants.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:20 am.
Moneyball is a really, really good movie, but it’s not a typical baseball movie. You have to know that going in otherwise I don’t think it’s as enjoyable. It’s really a movie about the business of sports teams. I found it fascinating.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 3:58 pm.
The only movie on the list that I have seen is Bridesmaids. I found it funny, but not really worthy of Oscar nominations.
I do want to see The Help, Moneyball, My Wee With Marilyn and Dragon Tattoo. I also want to see Beginners, not only for Christopher Plummer, but also for Ewan McGregor… I love him.
As for the leg, I found it so silly. The red carpet is the place for that, not presenting on stage. Maybe, the dress didn’t hang properly unless she stood like that, or maybe she was trying to take attention away from how sickly thin her arms were. I did like seeing the guys that won that award kind of mock her, though.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:28 am.
Also, I really didn’t enjoy Billy Crystal as host. It just seemed tired and safe. I like when they have someone that will poke fun at Hollywood.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:34 am.
Oh, I liked him! He’s so NICE. LOL I guess I liked that he was warm and friendly and sweetly charming. Last year? Yawn on the hosts.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 4:00 pm.
I agree, last year the hosts were terrible.
I think that was the problem- he was too nice. I like it when the host rocks the boat a little bit.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 5:12 pm.
Meryl Streep is incredible, isn’t she? I’ve only seen one movie of hers that I didn’t like. She was fabulous in it, but it had such a terrible, shockingly sad ending that I was angry with her afterward. Unfortunately, I’ve blocked out the title of the movie. It was an indie drama about international math students. Sounds thrilling, doesn’t it?
The moment with Angelina flashing her leg was awkward to watch. Clearly, she doesn’t suffer from low self-esteem.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:43 am.
Or does she? Hmmmm.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 4:00 pm.
Claudia, I share many of your opinions about the Oscar movies. I thought the Descendents was slow and depressing. I did not see Warhorse because I am not in the mood for a tear-jerker these days. I am sure it was excellent. I loved the Bridesmaids. I loved Moneyball. I liked Midnight in Paris, loved loved loved The Help (and the book) and haven’t seen the others.
I tried to read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close when it came out in book, but I wasn’t ready for 9/11 again. I should try it now because I really do like the author.
I saw This Means War and it was surprisingly and outlandishly fun!
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 12:38 pm.
Ooooh, THIS MEANS WAR is on my must-see list. Looks like a lot of fun, and the action should mean DH will like it, too.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 1:36 pm.
Oh, good!! I am so glad to hear that! I really thought I’d like This Means War, now I know I will! Thanks, Julia!
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 4:01 pm.
Here’s the latest on Angelina’s leg
http://tinyurl.com/87y37lj
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 12:46 pm.
Ha, that would make sense! Still she’s waaay to skinny. She looks sickly. Just my opinion!
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 2:03 pm.
I only saw The Help and Moneyball.. I was desparate to see The Decendents and I guess I will have to see it when it comes out on DVD…like the rest of the movies I didn’t see from the Oscar nominated movies… Oh well, thank god for DVD’s
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 1:31 pm.
On The Descendants, I’m not a Clooney fan (though I don’t dislike him), but the plot really bothered me (as described in a review). I just don’t know if that movie is going to make the cut.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 4:02 pm.
I love movies, but I avoid going to see those that leave me feeling more depressed than when I went into the theater. I saw “Moneyball” and “War Horse”. Loved the first, wanted to love the second (I’m a huge Spielberg fan) but ended up deciding the cinematography was awesome. I own “The Help” — maybe this weekend I’ll have time to watch it.
I thought Angelina’s leg was awesome. Five days after the Oscars and who’s everybody talking about? Miss Jolie. She knows how to work the publicity machine like nobody’s business.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 2:14 pm.
You own The Help—you smart girl. IMHO, this movie is an instant classic. They’ll be watching it 50 years from now and still loving it.
Posted on March 2, 2012 at 4:03 pm.
I actually haven’t seen any of the nominated films yet. I would love to see War Horse, but my Old Yeller scarred childhood is cringing at the thought. I loved the book The Help. I lived in Selma, Alabama from 1963 until 1967 and had a front row seat to much of the Civil Rights Movement. I a child and most fortunate in that my parents explained what was going on and why and made me understand the significance of it all. My Mom has seen The Help and said it was a wonderful film. And Ms. Spencer is a hometown girl who was raised and educated 20 miles from here.
I’d love to see The Iron Lady as I love Meryl and admire Dame Thatcher immensely. Love tough old broads, being one myself. (Or so my nephew says!)
Sorry, but I am not a fan of the Larsson books. Life is hard enough without submerging myself in someone else nightmares, thank you. And my nephew walked out of the movie so I am glad I didn’t go with him to see it.

Louisa, I think you and I are in the same movie boat.

I´ve just realized I have not seen a single one. Right now I´m either too busy to watch new movies or I´m watching something old. My plan for tomorrow night for example is to watch Red Sonja….. for the fourth time. :Ö)

Velga, as long as you’re having a good time, who cares?
Well, Hollywood, I guess.

That is a good point Claudia, and yes I´m having a marvelous time :ÖD In five years from now maybe I´ll get around to seing the Help and the Bridesmaids. The rest I think I´ll pass. War, sports and politics aren´t my cup of tea. Just make me angry. And Hollywood probably won´t go bankrupt if I do. XÖ)

Before I met my dh, I used to watch movies all the time. Of course, there wasn’t much to do in my small Montana hometown. Then, my dh and I started dating in college. He was a film major, which made watching movies a little less tolerable. The biggest change came when he got a job in the industry. If we saw a movie in the theater, he’d have to take it apart to figure out things. Many times it was SO annoying that we’d end up in a fight. Dvds at home meant that he’d watch a scene 5 times before moving onto the next scene. Slowly overtime, I went from seeing a TON of movies to seeing almost nothing. We don’t do movie dates, unless, I say there will be no discussing of the movie afterwards. I want to be entertained, not break the plot down, etc.
I saw 3 of the 5 animated movies that were nominated for Best Animated Feature because we took the kids to screenings since my dh works in animation. They will discuss the movie with him sometimes, but most of the time won’t. They don’t really like to participate in the focus groups after some of the screenings. I guess, they take after me, lol.

Well, I guess it’s understandable! It’s his field of study and his zone of work—how do you turn that off? But I hate that you lost movies. I love movies!

I hate that I did, too. I need to find some girlfriends who like to go to movies without their dhs.

The only movie you mentioned that I saw was Hugo. I just don’t get out to movies very often! Maybe next year. I enjoyed Hugo. I didn’t love it, but I did enjoy it. My little nephew loved it so much, he asked his grandparents to buy him the book. They had no idea, until they went to buy it, that it cost so much! But they bought it for him anyway. He’s their grandson, after all.
I DID see the leg thing, and I’m not sure what that was about. Brad PItt looked like he was smiling a “I wish I weren’t here for this” smile. If we’re talking about the same photo, that is.

The leg thing went on and on and on. It was her pose for the entire evening. Fine for the red carpet, but for the podium it was very, very strange.

George Clooney was ROBBED!!! “The Descendants” was the best movie and he was the best actor for sure. “The Help” was great! “Moneyball” was great. “My Week with Marilyn” was great! “Hugo” and “Extremely Loud…” sucked!!! “Warhorse” was more war than horse! “Beginners” sucked. We didn’t see “Iron Lady” or “The Artist”. Angie’s leg was a joke! She looked like a skeleton. Billy Crystal did ok.

One thumbs down for Hugo! You’re the first. I still think I’ll give it a shot. The visuals look great.

The only contender I saw was “The Artist” and that’s because it was showing in Tampa’s old movie palace so it was an appropriate venue. I enjoyed it mostly but I thought that the female lead was too modern (as in 21st century rather than 1920s-30s) and I kept being taken out of the story. I blame the director since he decides what gestures, etc. the actress will use. Jean DeJardin was wonderful. But I don’t think I would say it was the Best Picture last year. A friend of ours, however, liked it so much he saw it 3 times in the theatre and was ecstatic that it won.
On the other hand, I just read in Time magazine that the average Oscar voter is white, male, and definitely over 50. So maybe “The Artist” got the vote for nostalgia (the movies of their youth).
I will not see Dragon Tatoo because I no longer make myself watch/read something that painful just because it’s supposed to be “empowering” that she got some revenge. That’s primarily why I refuse to read Nicholas Sparks or watch the movies anymore–he seems to think he has to kill one of the leads off in order to be taken seriously. There’s enough pain in real life–I don’t need to let it invade my leisure time as well.

I don’t ever get to the movies but I watch the awards anyway. Before I even noticed the “Angelina pose” I was looking at her arms. Her shoulders looked almost anorexic to me.
Loved Meryl Streep.

I LOVED THE HELP!!! I have not seen any other movies nominated. As for Angelina’s leg. What a pose & poser.

Some really nice and utilitarian info on this web site, also I believe the style and design holds great features.
