I am not writing about bunnies today only because tomorrow is Easter and lots of us may be eating them—the chocolate kind, that is. I am also writing about them because it is spring, and they are among the wildlife cavorting outside my window.
We have always had rabbits around here. For years there was a family of them that made a home in my backyard amidst the wilderness at the rear of it, where a steep slope made gardening hopeless. Big brown rabbits would hop by our back deck, not much caring that humans were within ten feet of them. Sometimes one of them would sit in the middle of the back yard in the middle of the day, for hours. Like he thought he owned the place.
My cat, in whose view the property was his, period, thought these rabbits were really uppity. You may not know it, but cats and rabbits have very similar bodies. Their bone structures from the neck down are spookily alike. Anyway, my cat thought the rabbit family took liberties in his territory that he could not allow to stand. It annoyed him in ways the incursions of birds, rodents, snakes, turkeys and even dogs did not. He did not hunt them so much as challenge them, the way he would a cat that stepped over the line. They would get into fights.
My cat did not always win. Rabbits are fast and have big teeth and claws, after all. My cat had war wounds, nipped ears and scars that I am sure were inflicted by the big bad brown daddy rabbit who was the pater familias of the group we hosted. I mostly know he did not win because the rabbits did not leave.
I would have preferred if the rabbit family moved because these rumbles often were loud and vicious. Also, there was the whole baby bunny problem.
My cat did not kill the bunnies right away when he got them. First he sort of adopted them. I would see him strolling by in the spring, carryng a bunny by the scruff of its neck, kitten style. The little bunny—and they are very little when babies–would be flailing away, its tiny paws swinging wildly, while it squeaked.
Of course I had to interfere. It was a bunny, for heaven’s sake. Not a mouse (go get ‘em, cat) or a mole (hey, cat, living here ain’t a free ride, ya know) or even a chipmunk (ok, I will confess that despite their scandalous over breeding—they muliple like, um, rabbits—and the way they turned my yard into underground condos, I did sometimes save the chipmunks too). This was an adorable, furry, cute as can be tiny bunny.
So I’d go out there and chase the cat who could run pretty fast with a bunny in its mouth. Eventually I would corner him, and he would drop the bunny who would freeze out of fear (no, don’t play dead! Now is when you run!) Cat would then have a wonderful time dodging me as he tried to decide if that bunny was a relative or dinner. Finally I would grab cat and carry him away, so the bunny could escape. All of this took at least half an hour each time.
By the end of summer those babies were not babies anymore, and the cat was no longer interested in adopting them. Late at night there would be sounds of a fight out back, but I knew it was not another cat being challenged for violating my cat’s territory. He was facing off that bunny, who was now as big and brown and bad as his dad.
Have you ever had a pet rabbit? Have you ever had a pet rabbit and a pet cat at the same time?
Have you ever eaten a rabbit? When you eat a chocolate one, do you treat the ears as the best part?
What is your favorite kind of candy? Any special or traditional treats in your house tomorrow?
I will give a signed copy of The Surrender of Miss Fairbourne to one comment poster today.

Chocolate in the shape of a bunny tastes better. Having said that: I smash my bunny & just go for it.

I have a method. Ears first, then slices. . . .

In Queensland, rabbits are outlawed as pets so I could never have a flop eared bunny as a pet. My cats (as opposed to the family’s cats) have all been really good hunters. The other day Acheron caught himself his second rat and I had to supervise him as he chewed on the rat’s head to kill it (it was really quite interesting). As for chocolate bunnies, I work from the ears down because that is just the way I have to eat them. My favourite sort of candy is a toss up of skittles, candy Easter eggs, candy canes, toffee apples and gobstoppers. I love gobstoppers and even though they are supposed to be really hard to break, my teeth are able to get through those easily.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:01 am.
What is a gobstopper? Maybe I know it by another name.. . .I also have to start at the ears and go down. I think I do because once, when I was little, a sibling took those ears when I saved them for last. Never again!
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:34 am.
A gobstopper is a variation on a jawbreaker, it’s named after a candy from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 11:39 am.
Why are rabbit outlawed as pets?
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:35 am.
I honestly have no idea, other states don’t have this law and ferrets are also illegal. Some law’s are kind of daft but they are the law.

We did have a white rabbit for about two weeks when I was around 10 years old. We kept him in a large cage in our backyard. He was violently shaken by our neighbor’s dog while we were at school. It had to be put to sleep. So sad!
I love chocolate bunnies. I didn’t really savor the ears just slowly ate the whole bunny . I liked the colorful accents: eyes, ribbon, basket, hat, carrot etc.
I’ve never tried rabbit.
I always buy chocolate a solid chocolate rabbit, yellow peeps , Hershey chocolate tiny wrapped eggs, jelly beans and Cadbury cream eggs.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 6:33 am.
It may be gross in a bunny blog, but I have eaten rabbit. My brother was a hunter and that was one of the things they hunted. My mom’s background was such that rabbit was considered fair game too. She cooked hers sort in a type of marinara sauce, but always added a touch of vinegar to cut the gamey taste that wild rabbits have.
Cadbury cream eggs are special because around here they are only sold this time of year.

We used to have a pet rabbit. It was potty trained and everything. His name was Fluffy, creative I know. He was houseebroken and loved to watch General Hospital with me. I swear to you he hopped around and then would park himself in front of the television while the show was on. Fluffy was so soft, cute, and lovable. The trick was trying to keep the dog away from him. We had an even fuzzier chow chow that thought Fluffy would make a good meal. We loved the rabbit, but for safety issues found it a nice home when we realized the two would never get along! I have always loved chocolate rabbits, and yes the ears were the best! White chocolate was even better IMO! Happy Easter!

In looking for pics for this I ran across some web info on rabbits as pets and it did appear that dogs never accept them as other pets, and will treat them as game. I think that some rabbits and cats live in harmony, though. But they have so many similarities that may be why. I am fascinated that yours was housebroken and “used the potty.”!

When I lived in PEI over 20yrs ago, one of my landlord’s kids had a pet bunny. they would go away quite often and they would ask me to feed it, rehay it’s hutch and check on it daily. It lived in a hutch they made into the wall of their barn/garage. It was very sweet and loved petting but not snuggles so much. And even though the house was technically in the city, we were a small city and our neighbourhood had racoons, skunks, even a hare or two.
My dad used to hunt and would try passing venison or rabbit into our meals when I was a young teen. yuck! so no. never ate one.
I got to play with a puppy yesterday! my sis is dog sitting her daughter’s puppy as well as her son’s HUGE bernese mountain dog. hilarious to see them together. I’m going to put the vid up on youtube so I can post the link later in the day. our schedules lined up so that yesterday was our family Easter dinner. chocolate bunnies were waiting for us on our plates at the table. which of course is what 3 yr Autumn had for her meal! lol
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 7:13 am.
ooo a puppy. What fun. So if that rabbit pet did not snuggle, did it just sit in that hutch? Maybe it snuggled with the family at least.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:41 am.
naw, the kids weren’t too interested in snuggling the poor guy either. it had a nice hutch with an outside part over looking the yard but still not a huge amount of room. my cat made friends with it and they would hang out together.
Sorry, I didn’t post the video yet. I was exhausted from the puppy play, company, food prep, entertaining my great niece and generally being “on” until late at night, that I pooped out at 11am and headed back to bed to snooze and read thru the day. I do enjoy family get togethers but am exhausted the next day. sigh

No pet bunnies here, just the kind I had to run off when they started to try multiplying in plain view (none of that in my backyard!). Pet cat yes, loved my Tiger kitty, he mostly went for moles and mice so very little traumatic hunting results. The dog on the other hand, went for anything that ran, saved a few chipmunks from her. The only sort of rabbit I’ve had is the chocolate kind and all of the bunny is equally yum! I’d try bunny though, mostly to me they’ve been pests rather than pets, and I like other game animals like deer. As for fav candy, the list could get long so I’ll stick to the can only find it at easter kind and say cadbury cream eggs and russel stovers dark chocolate rasberry whip eggs. Have a stash of those plus my other faves waiting for tomorrow mmm!
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 7:55 am.
I really like Russell Stover chocolate. For a brand that is not hugely expensive it is really good. When I was growing up we got Russell Stover chocolate bunnies when the finances were okay and I still buy them when I see them. I don’t think I have seen the rasberry whip eggs, though. I’ll check later today in the store here that carries that brand.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:43 am.
They hide amongst the marshmallow and caramel ones, and it seems they never have as many of the raspberry dark ones as the other sorts so is a bit of a hunt here. The hubby actually found them this time (I’d given up) because he loves them too.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 11:45 am.
No bunnies, though I do often put my hands around my cat’s faces and make stupid remarks about… “Whose got da bunny face…hmmm…whose da bunny?”
Which upsets my cat’s dignity and causes them to get back at me in many passive aggresive ways…like waking me today at 5 am because that’s when they always get their morning meal during the week.
I think bunnies are cute, not really into eating them, however I do have friends who make rabbit stew, and seem to enjoy it.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 8:15 am.
Passive agressive felines? Who would have thunk? My cats are both gone, but I will miss them tomorrow as they always enjoyed playing with the eggs the Easter Bunny hid.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 8:17 am.
I used to turn my first cat into a bunny by playing with her ears. If you sort of pin them back, a cat sort of looks like one even in the head and face. She was very patient with me. She knew I was new to pets and did not know I was insulting her.
Wild rabbits are big. Even here in PA they are big. There are other places where they are much larger, I have been told. So they have always been game animals. We can buy rabbit in our grocery stores sometimes. In other countries it is really common.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:46 am.
We have bunnies cavorting in our lawn as well. They are so darn adorable! Yes, we have had pet bunnies, but the best kind of bunnies are made of milk chocolate and there will be three around here tomorrow, one in each child’s basket.
My favorite kind of candy is Reeces Peanut Butter Eggs, because, every girl needs her protein.
Happy Easter, Goddesses!
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 8:15 am.
There is nothing like a good, solid milk chocolate bunny. DH likes dark chocolate so he gets that but for Easter I want to milk chocolate like i had as a kid. Happy Easter to you to!
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:48 am.
I’ve never had a pet rabbit although a friend has one and tells me it’s the best pet she’s ever had. Elwood considered anything moving in the yard a chase and chew toy, so we could never have had one. Reggie doesn’t seem interested in anything but birds at the moment.
I have eaten rabbit. Once. Never again.
The ears of the chocolate bunny go first.
My favorite candy is peanut M & Ms.
Tomorrow there will be lamb. But not for me. Ick.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 8:24 am.
I am making turkey. When I was growing up we always had lamb at Easter. Only at Easter. And I did not like it. I don’t know if it was how my mom cooked it, or if I just don’t like lamb. I have had a braised lamb dish once that I did like— no lamby taste and lots of other flavors then. But roasted lamb is no my thing either.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:50 am.
I have rabbits galore in my yard, although they seem to bail as soon as they hear the back door open and the Hounds from Hell being released. Those rabbits aren’t stupid! Never eaten one (as far as I know), never had one as a pet, although the ones in the yard almost count since I don’t chew them out for dining on my garden.
When it comes to chocolate bunnies, I’ve taught the kids well: Ears First. No, I don’t know why, but that’s my moment of OCD. And my favorite Easter candy is jelly beans, specifically the black ones. But since I’m having a hard time finding those the last few years, I broke down yesterday and bought some black Twizzlers.
Snarky Daughter’s bunny this year is Chocolate with Caramel inside, Scout Son only wants solid chocolate, so he’s getting that (although I wasn’t on the ball this week — forgot it was Easter THIS weekend — so it’s milk chocolate and not dark. And in a moment of hormonal weakness I picked up a cookies and cream white chocolate rabbit for me. I showed my strength by getting the small one!
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 9:16 am.
Wow, you have a lot of variety to choose from with your chocolate bunnies. Did you go to a specialty store? No cookies and cream bunnies here.
The ears first tradition started in our family when I was a kid. Often the bunnies were hollow—except the ears, which would be solid or almost solid. So of course that was the best part.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:52 am.
I’ve seen the caramel filled and the cookies and cream bunnies at the store. They are Russell Stover and come in diffeent sizes, there are also peanut butter filled and chocolate with crispie ones, along with the standsard milk, dark, and white chocolate ones.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 12:47 pm.
My friend had a bunny as a pet. It was always in its cage so I didn’t get the point.
Rabbit – not an entree I want to try again. Chocolate however ….
The ears are as good as the rest because 1) mom always required the ears as a tribute 2) the Easter bunny only ever brought solid bunnies – hallow ones were frowned upon.
I will restocking my house with Cadbury mini eggs tout de suite (sp?).
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 9:23 am.
Oh, wow, your mom took all the ears!! Well, if they were all solid that was not too bad, I guess.
People cook rabbit wrong, that is why you did not like it. I am talking brave, but the truth is I would not seek it out either, even though I did not hate it.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:54 am.
P.S. have I mentioned how much I enjoyed Miss Fairbourne? And Lady X? Both great and had really interesting and unique plots. Suzie’s Rogue kept me company on a long flight yesterday, I think I want to take my time to finish it. Next up Barefoot, then Barbara’s newest will be available.
Thanks goddesses for all the great works you’ve been giving us.

Thank you, Fresh!
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:54 am.
The only bunnies I’ve owned are the cute stuffed cuddly kind. I’ve got 2 actually (you’re never 2 old for cute cuddlies!) there’s SW (super wabbit), a pink bean bag rabbit that’s a little worse for wear as I got him when I was quite young in my Easter basket, and Cuddles a nice size white fluffy bunny w/ cute ears that my mom got for me (her baby
, & again for Easter) a few years back. When it comes to eating rabbit, I do prefer the chocolate variety best
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 9:30 am.
I have a couple of the fuzzy stuffed kind too. It is the sort of thing dh has been known to bring home if he thought they were cute.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:55 am.
The adopting baby rabbits bit is funny. I can picture it, and how frustrating it must have been for you giving chase lol
Been lucky enough to not have hit any poor rabbits….
Never had any pets, but in the area I live in it’s a lot of new developments and there are rabbits everywhere. I’ll see them scattering on the lawns in the morning before work, and constantly running across the roads. It’s terrible how many I see ranover
Never eaten a rabbit. Can’t bring myself to eat any super “cute” animals. Rabbits, lamb, etc… A girlfriend of mine was working in South Korea for a while and she told me how she ate turtle soup, and I was horrified. eeeeek
I always go for the chocolate ears first. I need to find a solid chocolate bunny though lol.. They are always hollow and I feel jipped out of chocolate
I think I’m going to splurge tomorrow and have some Godiva truffles. Talk about decadent…
Happy Easter Everyone!!!
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 9:40 am.
I think that the Dove bunnies are solid. They better be, since DH bought some.
Rabbits don’t have many natural predetors once an area gets developed. The bigger animals leave; the rabbits stay and get comfortable. This family we had was here for years. It finally moved when we did some big renovations and the workmen were all around all the time for months. I picture them packing up, shaking their heads about how inconsiderate we had been.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:59 am.
No pet bunnies. Just the chocolate kind. I start with the ears and work my way down. A little at a time, savoring each bite because I will not have another one for a year.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:07 am.
And the best part is they have no calories. I’ll bet you did not know that, huh?
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 11:00 am.
We actually have 2 indoor rabbits now. One is 6 & I got her for my daughter when she broke her arm in 1st grade & had to stay home for a week. The other is 4 & we just adopted her from one of my daughter’s friends, who got a dog that was allergic to hay! They are sweet & like to be petted, but not held. Plus, you can’t let them out of the cage unless you unplug everything & stay in the room to make sure they don’t dhew the furnature! Much more cage cleaning work than the hamsters, but adorable.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:27 am.
Oh, good, someone who has one. So they don’t bite when you go to pet them? How often do you let them out of the cage? I expect they need some exercise, or is the cage pretty big and they can move around in it?
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 11:02 am.
Happy Easter. Had two pet bunnies for a while, but they didn’t appreciate being penned up. Gave them to a loving home in the country. Never ate rabbit, my mom warned my grandfather never to feed it to my sisters or me. Love chocolate bunnies and peeps bunnies (ears first….just because).
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:35 am.
I have only seen peeps chicks. Bunnies must be a new horizontal marketing development. I’m sure they taste as good (or bad, since you know peeps are bad for you even as you munch, but who cares?)
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:14 pm.
Bunnies – no never had as a pet – my cousin did and I enjoyed visiting hers!!!
I do like cooking rabbit – rabbit linguine is terrific – yes I know — but our rules, we shoot it, we eat it!! And it was in Alaska years ago..
As for Easter candy – eating the solid milk chocolate has to be done ears down – and favorite candy are the big 1 lb eggs we would get at Gardners Candy Store in Central PA love the solid coconut or peanut butter meltaway one!!Would last for a long time!!! They used to put your name on it!! Next to that have to jelly beans and some kind of dark chocolate for the basket!! And I always try to find some kind of chocolate cross or lamb to put in the basket as a tradition from childhood.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:37 am.
My mom’s rabbit was always served with pasta too. And we also ate it because it had been shot so of course it would be wrong not to eat it. I guess we could have told my brother to stop hunting. . .. this is why we sometimes ate venison too. His wife would not cook it, so it came to us. My mom had no problem with it.
I think PA has some great chocolate makers. We have Sarris where I live and it is a tradition and an institution. There are a couple of others here too. There used to be one with a little factory about a half mile from me, but it closed. It had the best big eggs. I like the ones with nuts.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:17 pm.
I love to eat Chocolate bunnies, not so much on the real ones, tho I have had it a few times. I eat ears first and I like my chocolate bunny to be hollow, they just taste better to me!
I never had a pet rabbit, though I had friends who did and I always thought they were so cute, but hated getting near their cages, whew!
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:51 am.
Smelly, huh? Someone posted she had a house trained bunny. I wonder if that meant it knew to use the straw, or it knew to wait and go outside.
I can imagine it gets strong. They are not small animals.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:19 pm.
When I was very young both my brother and I got rabbits. They were inside pets (you can housebreak them), my brothers rabbit refused to be housebroke but mine would always go to the paper. We eventually gave them to a neighbor who bred them.
When I was a teenager, I was given 2 big white rabbits and 2 small white w/grey ears, nose, feet that were ill. I was able to save all but one of the small ones.
Since we lived off and on in the country we always had stray animals (some domestic and some wild) that we raised. I think one of the cutest was the baby opossums that we bottle fed. They would wrap their little tails around my little finger while I held them to give them a bottle.
As for eating rabbit…it’s very good. So is deer, buffalo, and many other critters.
As for chocolate bunnies, since my last pregnancy I don’t have a taste for chocolate anymore…no really, I can take it or leave it.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:57 am.
What interesting experiences with bunnies and other creatures you have had. I hope you recover from the chocolate malais, though. I don’t love it like some people do, but there are times when nothing else will do it for me.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:20 pm.
Never had a pet rabbit, just dogs, a cat, and a couple of hamsters. We have a privacy fence and two dogs (one of which is an infamous mole hunter) so I don’t think we’ll be seeing any bunnies in our yard anytime soon.
Never eated rabbit (that I know of)except for the chocolate kind. With those I usually eat the ears first just out of habit.
Easter for me is not complete without at least one cadbury egg and one Reeses peanut butter egg. Also almost always get robins eggs (like whoppers, only shaped like little eggs with a speckled candy coating).
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:58 am.
WE always had the robins eggs in the boys’ baskets. I liked them because they were not icky sweet and a nice change from all the high sugar stuff. Not that I really restrained myself much with the sugary candy either.
I did not put up a privacy fence, but my fence is such that it is possible it will discourage rabbits, now that you mention it. It will definitely keep the turkeys out of my yard, I think, unless they decide to fly in.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:23 pm.
I’ve eaten rabbit – the meaty kind. It’s delicious. Very tender dark meat, which is my favorite. Too bad you can’t find it on a menu very often.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 11:11 am.
Maybe the local sourcing foodies will decide rabbit is a sustainable meat (it sure is!) and make it fashionable.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:24 pm.
When I was younger and lived at home …yes we did have rabbits and cats. Do not remember any problem having them both. My grandfather had several rabbits and I will always remember when staying there feeding them. I have never eaten rabbit meat not sure if I care to. We are snowbirds and are right now in Arizona. Family is in Washington State so we have no special plans for Easter. My sister and husband were here several weeks ago and I think I ate have the jar of his Jelly Belly Beans. I do like the Cadbury Egg though.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 11:12 am.
Did your rabbits run around, or were they caged? There were quite a few pics on the web like the one I have above, of a rabbit and cat being very friendly. I’d think they would have to spend a lot of time really free around each other for that, but maybe not.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:26 pm.
loved chocolate bunnies.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 11:16 am.
me too
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:26 pm.
My boys were in 4H so at any one time we would 300+ rabbits. We did eat the ones we couldn’t show. We had mini-lops, Californians, Siamese, Harlequins, Rex. After we were no longer in 4-H, we had a lab/shepherd dog, Dusty. We trained her to chase squirrels but leave the rabbits alone. She never caught squirrels. Had a mother bunny who had babies in our yard, 3 foot from the deck. Dusty never bothered the nest. One morning the bunnies came out of the nest and I found Dusty trying to herd them back. While I was at work (and Dusty was inside), mother moved them. Love marshmallow peeps.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 11:22 am.
I saw all the different kinds of rabbits when I looked for pics, but did not know the name for them. I like my little guy at the top, but he looks very different from the literally garden variety we have in the wild here. Our wild ones are very typical—ears upright, brown fur, typical ear and body shape. No floppy eared ones, like in my other pic.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:28 pm.
I believe the one on top is a Dwarf. We didn’t have that type. The bottom one is a mini-lop. Harlequins are hard to show. They have to have their ear color opposite the front legs’ color. The front leg color has to be opposite the back legs’ color. Nature just doesn’t work that way.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 6:17 pm.
We lived in the suburbs of Philly. We would get pets…rabbits, chickens, ducks.. as gifts around Easter and before the summer was over my father would have taken them to a farm in the country. “They’ll be happier there” he would tell us! ;o)
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 11:27 am.
LOL! Well, they would be, maybe
I had a friend who got a little duckling for Easter. I was sooooo jealous. Then it grew into a big duck and wasn’t nearly as cute. It sort of bitched a lot, as I remember. It had definite ideas about where we should be and what we should be doing and if we erred this duck would squawk and flap and make a scene. Who knows what we were doing wrong.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:31 pm.
Oh, and my granddaughter currently has a rabbit in her apartment! LOL
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 11:27 am.
Does she keep it caged, or let it roam around?
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:29 pm.
When I was a kid, I wanted bunnies, so my loving and wonderful parents bought me two. Wellll.. gotta tell you, they did what rabbits do and soon I had several baby bunnies. Have you ever seen or held a day old baby? No hair, eyes still closed and so incredibly delicate and silky. I loved the fact that you could tell where some of their markings would be due to the color of their skin (pink or black) My favorite I called Velvet Ears because he was jet black with the exception of one white mark that started at his shoulder (just one side) being about an inch long and tapered off to a point right after the front shoulder and before his ribs. He was great. Unfortunately I no longer have tame rabbits I enjoy the wild ones in our yard. When you mentioned the cat and rabbits, our cats would watch the wild rabbits from the window. The rabbits would literally be on our front step, right in front of the door. However, they did not go as crazy as one of our dogs (a weimeraner–known as the grey ghost and featured in Wiggems photographs and calenders) This dog went absolutely BONKERS! Barking, whining, up on her hind legs at the window, scratching at the window and each time looking back at us humans as if to say “get it!! get it!! better yet let ME get it!! NOW NOW NOW!!!!”
good times, good times lol.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 11:36 am.
I am convinced that rabbits confuse cats. I really think their size and form leave cats scratchign their heads, because with just a few changes they could look a lot like cats too. Dogs, however, know game when they see it. We had a dog who would wait patiently while a rabbit was in the front yard, but when we took her out, zooommm. She never got one, but those rabbits made tracks once they saw her coming.

Have not had a pet rabit, but have eaten real rabit as a kid. As far as chocolate rabits the ears must be eaten first. I do have a lot of rabits in my yard.

Sorry I meant rabbit, it to big of a hurry today
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 11:39 am.
See, I agree with you—eating the ears first is not just a preference with me. They MUST be eaten first.

Have you ever had a pet rabbit and a pet cat at the same time? No, had a cat but no rabbit
Have you ever eaten a rabbit? Had rabbit once, didn’t really like it.
When you eat a chocolate one, do you treat the ears as the best part? Of course, they are the best part
What is your favorite kind of candy? I like peeps, Cadbury eggs, Dove chocolate truffle eggs
Any special or traditional treats in your house tomorrow? Just the family get together and the little ones hunt eggs
Hope everyone has a great Easter!!

Our boys used to hunt eggs, so now I am nostalgic. I learned early to make a list of where I put them.:) Nothing worse than an egg that can’t be found ’cause the easter bunny did such a darned good job hiding it.
Dove truffle eggs are heavenly.

Never had a rabbit…I’m not sure if the bunnies or the cedar chips in the cages made me sneeze, but sneeze I did. Over and over and over……. A friend of mine when I was little had them and also had guinea pigs. I was MISERABLE when I stayed at her house, mostly because they were so cute, I wanted to pet them anyway.
Love to eat those chocolate ones though! I never really saved any part for last out of pleasure. I’ve lived in Texas all my life, so it’s usually already too hot to have chocolate outside, so I was usually eating the part that was melted the most first.
My favorite is the Lindt truffles…mmmmm. SO yummy!
And, I can get them year-round.

While my sister took the ‘hamster/guinea pig’ route, I was the bunny queen. Yes, we did have a cat — she lived indoors and the rabbits outside. Perfect combo for me….while my sister had to scramble, chasing errant escapee furballs before they became lunch!
Oh! And I’ll take a Peeps bunny anytime…most especially when it’s a tad bit chewy.
Happy Easter, Madeline! (Just finished Dangerous in Diamonds — LOVE the deviant Duke.)

num num on the chocolate.. but I remember being so disappointed as a kid when the basket started to include hollow bunnies
re eating ‘em: Hasenpfeffer (Rabbit Stew)
DO NOT believe anyone who says certain dishes Taste Like Chicken. Same is true for frog legs. ick.
A couple years back we brought home the school rabbit for spring break. Not a good idea with 3 dogs. And a hawk in the neighboring lot. Someone found a way to unlatch a cage. Poor bunny. It was really hard to explain to the school.

When I was really, really little my older sister had a white rabbit as a pet. I think it’s name was Snowball. I’ve no idea what happened to it, but I think it and our cat, Yankee(we adopted him from some Canadians), didn’t really get along.
My little brother had a friend whose family raised rabbits to eat because it was cheaper to do that than buy beef or chicken. I remember my little brother being horrified that someone would eat rabbits, lol, but after my mom explained everything, he was just fine. Although, I think he made sure that he never ate at his friend’s house, lol.
Ears, first with chocolate bunnies. No real bunnies ever. They look like they’d be too gamey.
As for my favorite candy – hmmm, salted caramels would be number one (Sugar Babies, too), but Lifesaver and Starburst jelly beans are yummy.

No, I have never had a pet rabbit. My cousins got two rabbits for Easter one year, but that was as close as it got.
I’ve never eaten a real rabbit, but the chocolate variety are rather delicious. I always eat them ears-first.
My favourite kind of candy/chocolate are Ferrero Rochets and Lindt, but for Easter candy, I tend to gravitate towards Robins Eggs. Mmmm. And yes, tomorrow morning I’m setting up an Easter egg hunt for my sons (1 1/2 and 3) It should be fun

I never had a pet rabbit. I have never eaten rabbit but I love to eat chocolate bunnies feet first(I know it’s weird) and save the ears for last:)
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 12:37 pm.
OK, has chickens, rabbits, and goose named Willy as a kid. Would never eat a rabbit, too much like eating Bambi. We love to have Easter brunch, always lots of candy, but favorite things are the sticky buns and the chocolate croissants.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 12:57 pm.
My friends pet bunny was very naughty with things it found laying around so I don’t think I could ever have one as a pet lol. Although they are definitely adorable.
I could never eat bunny. Even if they weren’t cute they smell awful.
I love reeses cups, starburst, sweettarts…

Cleo and Sophie where the pet rabbits. And yes, we had cats at the same time. (I had daughters. Pets of every kind, even a couple of lizards (shudder), surprisingly introduced by one of my girls, not my son, violated my domain at some point.
Now we have rabbits living under the shed, the porch, and in the wilderness I have yet to tackle at the property line. My cat never goes outdoors (I don’t do potential road pizza), so we have a resident feral that does guard duty.
Loved Miss Fairbourne, btw, so don’t include me in the drawing. Give someone else a wonderful Easter gift. Hope you have a peaceful holiday loaded with CHOCOLATE bunnies you can nip the ears from!

Never had a bunnie but my brothers former neighbor had several of them. They smelled. LOL
I eat the ears first.
Happy Easter

Growing up on the farm we had rabbits in hutches . My sister showed them at the county fair. Cars were always in the barn.
One Easter my aunt bought this cute little white bunny to help some University science students raise money. She gave it to us. He was such a sweetie and loved to snuggle. He was used to being handled by the students. One afternoon we came home from shopping and he was dead in his box. No clue what happened. I always wondered if he was used as a lab experiment.
Everyone here gets their favorite chocolate bunny: Dove, Reester, white chocolate, snickers, and milky way. Must have jelly beans and Cadbury mini eggs.

I’ve never had a bunny just a bunch of kitties. I have eaten rabbit….once. First and last time. I prefer the chocolate kind, actually anything chocolate is good for me.
I already have the book (loved it) so don’t put me in the contest.

See, this is why I don’t like watching nature shows on TV. They break my heart! There’s always going to be some adorable animal I love who comes to a tragic end. My heart can’t take it!
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 2:22 pm.
I am with you Susan! My daughter paints to the nature shows and it seems every time I walk into the room some cute little thing is getting eaten by something bigger. It is actually a joke between us now. She will send me out of the room just so nothing gets killed.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 2:37 pm.
I think those nature shows are made for people who LIKE to see animal violence, sometimes. I mean, I know they hunt each other, but jeesh, that is all they seem to show. It always seems to be some wildebeast or gizelle getting it too. Those two species seem to be on every predator’s hit list.

Madeline your cat must be very brave to take on a rabbit. They can be pretty fierce! How cute that he wants to adopt one of his very own. One of my friends has one as a pet and they let him out to hop around the yard.
I have eaten rabbit but prefer chocolate. Especially Kit Kat bars! Now that both DDs are out on their own there will be no Easter basket for us.
Tomorrow we will start the morning off with Russian Egg Borscht. It is a tradition from my husband’s family. We will serve ham and all the sides. Rhubarb strawberry pie for dessert – no tradition just a lot of rhubarb!
Happy Easter All!
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 2:46 pm.
I LOVE strawberry rhubarb pie!!!!! None here, though. No basket either (sniff). Just some chocolate bunnies
And turkey instead of ham, for DH, who loves turkey. A ham is a lot of eating these days for our small family.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:43 pm.
Ah, strawberry rhubarb pie – my favorite. It’s just hard to find rhubarb in SoCal, but I did manage to find some at the farmer’s market. I’m buying what I can to freeze it. Cooking Light has a recipe for strawberry rhubarb ice cream that’s pretty good, and their strawberry rhubarb crisp is really good.

I’ve never had a pet rabbit or cat. However, when I was small, we got a few live baby chicks for Easter.
I enjoy chocolate rabbits and yes, the ears and feet are special.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 3:12 pm.
So what happened when the chicks grew up? There are probably farms that take them back every year.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:41 pm.
I never eaten rabbit but I loved the Easter bunnies candies. My dog couple of summers ago found a nest near the kids tree house and guard them like a mama hen. Which was good because later that day my husband decided he was mowing the lawn and didn’t noticed until our dog was barking which was strange because she never barked like that. Man, were we glad.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:21 pm.
I have seen a nest of the babies beneath a friend’s tree. But as soon as we saw it, the mother moved them. Your dog was sweet to protect them!

I’m allergic to rabbits and cats! Sad, so very sad…
Just about anything chocolate covered gets a thumbs up from me…
And yes, I have prepared and eaten rabbit, in one of my culinary school classes. It does look like a cat when it’s skinned- pretty unnerving, actually. I didn’t really enjoy it, I don’t like dark meat anything and rabbit is pretty gamy. Not my bag, baby.
I like the solid chocolate bunnies, the hollow ones are a gyp.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:29 pm.
Not looking to gross anyone out, but they look so similar tha tin cultures where rabbits are eaten it is customary to leave the head on so it is clear no substitutions have been made.
The gamey part is what makes it unpopular here. My mom always put some vinegar in the sauce to cut and counteract that. It helped. It did not remove it totally. So I have no desire to eat it either.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 4:39 pm.
When we were kids my brother raised rabbits but they were never intended to be pets, they were food. We always had pets of all breeds. I have eaten rabbit but I didn’t like it so I have avoided doing it again. Love the chocolate bunnies, especially the ears.
My favorite candy is Mozart Chocolate, very hard to find outside of Europe. Very dark chocolate is next in line.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 5:06 pm.
I did have a pet rabbit when I was little, but it stayed outside we did have cats then too. Just the chocolate kind. My favorite candy is anything white chocolate.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 5:44 pm.
I never had a pet rabbit, but one of my teachers at the after school program had rabbit she kept in the classroom. I’ve only eaten chocolate rabbits. I don’t eat them a particular, but I guess the ears are the first to go. I love Maltesers. They’re like Whoppers.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 6:14 pm.
I’ll never forget the year my mother decided to cook rabbit for Easter dinner. What a terrible choice! All of us kids thought we were having the Easter bunny for dinner, and didn’t want to eat it.
I can’t remember if I ate any of it or not, it was so traumatic, all I can remember is the incident itself. When I eat a chocolate bunny, of course I eat the ears first, they’re the best part.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 7:04 pm.
I can’t eat chocolate anymore, although I love it. My fave was the Recee’s peanut butter egg. I always like the solid (not hollow) bunnies.
I can eat the white bunnies now, but, why bother? LOL
Yes, the ears used to be the fave.
We used to have a neighborhood rabbit but he left…and we have all kinds of wild ones. They are so cute!
Happy Easter everyone!

I had NEVER had a pet rabbit before. I DO eat choco rabbits, though. I prefer the milk and/or white choco rabbits. I think the ears should be eaten first since they scream ‘Eat me! Eat me!’ to me; the other parts just don’t have loud voices. I prefer eating a cupcake over the candy to eat during Easter. I love the whipped cream topping with the yellow cupcake. Hmm…makes me want to eat one, even though I just ate one almost an hour ago.

I have never owned a rabbit or a cat so I have never owned them together. I have never eaten rabbit although my father loves it. Ironically enough, he is allergic to chocolate so he can’t enjoy Easter bunnies with us. I do eat the ears first. Yummy! My favorite candy…CHOCOLATE…Easter is a very good time of year for me!
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 9:25 pm.
I’ve never had a pet rabbit. I don’t save the ears on chocolate ones, I like to eat the ears and head so I feel less guilty. I like the Reese’s peanut butter eggs. Also Dove chocolates.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 9:28 pm.
I wish we could have Cadbury chocolate eggs the year round. Used to have pet rabbits when my brother and I were young. I have eaten wild rabbits. It was a way of life when we were young. Couldn’t think about eating one now.
Posted on April 7, 2012 at 10:39 pm.
We have little wild bunnies in our neighborhood. They use to show up in my yard all the time, but lately I haven’t seen them. I wonder what happened to them?
They ate all my lavender, which I imagine WOULD be a tasty treat for a rabbit. That’s why I stopped planting lavender. They don’t eat the rosemary. *G*
I like chocolate in any form, bunnies or otherwise. I love Reese’s, too, and peanut M&M’s. These days, though, it’s dark chocolate all the way for me.

My sister had a pet bunny named Cadbury. He was a cutie and spoiled rotten. He was also box trained so no messes in the house. Cadbury had one ear that stood up proud and one ear that flopped down like it had what my mom commonly called “laxative lag.” He spent his sunset years on my former SIL’s farm overseeing a bunny harem after my SIL decided to breed rabbits and Cadbury had outgrown his happy home.
As for my fave candy, well lemme see … the shorter list would be what DON’T I like!! I have a vicious sweet tooth that is stuck on hyperdrive. I really need to see my dentist and have that sucker pulled!!!
Posted on April 8, 2012 at 2:18 am.
My cat has also adopted baby bunnies, we usually let her keep them.
Your post reminded me of the animated movie, “Rango”, which we watched on Netflix last night. The town “doctor” was an adult male rabbit with only one ear. Just crazy enough to overcome the “cute” factor, and it had Johnny Depp as the chameleon.
