Popcorn Time

I’m still basking in the glow of the awesomeness that is The Avengers, so what else would I want to talk about but more movies? I love the summer movie season – the sitting in lines on beach towels and playing UNO to pass the time, the packed theaters, the smell of popcorn and Skittles.

Generally the season begins on Memorial Day weekend, but we’ve got an early start this year. This is a good thing as far as I’m concerned. And these are some of the movies I will be seeing in the next couple of weeks.

1) The Avengers – yes, I’ve seen it already, but I’m going again. I swear by Thor’s hammer I will throw a fit if they don’t make a sequel.

2) Dark Shadows – Johnny Depp’s hair looks goofy, but I’m powerless to resist.

3) Hysteria – an English period comedy…about the invention of the first vibrator to treat female hysteria. Hugh Dancy, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Rupert Everett.

4) Battleship – the big, loud, dumb movie of the summer, I’m sure. I have to go see at least one of those.

5) Men in Black IIIIII – whichever number it is.

6) Snow White and the Huntsman – now that Chris Hemsworth has The Avengers under his belt, well, he could star with a broom and I’d go see this movie.

7) PrometheusAlien terrified me, and it’s been about 33 years (holy cow!!) since then. I’m ready. (But I’m bringing my blankie, just in case.)

8 ) G.I. Joe: Retaliation – okay, so I’ll be seeing two big, loud, dumb movies this summer. I love The Rock.

Movies I will NOT be seeing this summer.

1) The Dictator – Pfffth.

2) That’s My Boy – Adam Sandler. If the best bits are in the trailer, then this could be the stupidest movie ever made. Double pfffth.

3) Take This Waltz – Seth Rogen’s laugh makes my skin crawl.

Anyway, there are more movies for both lists, but I want to hear what you’re going to see, what you’ll avoid, and whether you’ve seen The Avengers. And did you stay all the way through the end credits? Do you love summer movies, or the more cerebral movies of the Fall?

  1. Kelly Proellocks says:

I loved The Avengers. New Guy and I had a lovely make out session at times during the movie. I will be seeing Promethius because that looks awesome. There is a sequel to The Avengers and a sequel to Thor being made according to IMDB. Apparently there is Resident Evil Retribution coming out which I HAVE to watch.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

I abarelybreathed during the whole movie– when did you have time to smog, Kelly? ;-)

      1. Kelly Proellocks says:

The trailers and one or two other parts were great times – until I started coughing.

  2. Nickie Fleming says:

    The Avengers… where’s the time???
I’m also looking forward to seeing Dark Shadows, as I love every film with Johnny Depp. There was an interview in today’s newspaper about his new film, and the reporter wrote something about the ‘real Johnny Depp’ is quite mysterious. Well, I once got a chance to learn a bit about it, as the author, Vanessa and son Jack + friend (I presume one of the boys of Tim Burton) were sitting next to us in a restaurant and we could watch and hear everything. He was telling stories to the lads and only that showed how creative he is. He just could not keep his hands still (my sister says I do the same, but then I am also a bit creative) and he spoke very lively. He even included us in the conversation.
I don’t know what it is about us, but it’s not the first time this happens. Once during a skitrip in Baff we were in a restaurant together with Eric Clapton (we occupied the only two tables) and this one even suggested we put the tables together and so we ate and drank together. He even offered to pay our bill! (Which we did not accept, of course, but then he insisted he payed for the drinks and we stayed there sipping wine for quite a long time.) And another time I sat next to one of the sons of the Shah of Iran on a skilift, and the guy would not believe I was only a simple teacher!

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

You have a very exciting life, Nickie!

      1. Nickie Fleming says:

Yeah, sometimes… I could write a novel about it, but then I’d probably get into trouble and I always try to avoid that.

  3. LoriHandeland says:

I can’t wait to get to the Avengers. Seems everyone I know had gone and loved it.

I’m in for Dark Shadows. I used to change the station at the baby sitters to see this show and get in mega trouble. Besides, even though they constantly ugly-up Johnny Depp, must see him.

    MIB3, yep. Snow White-certainly. GI Joe-Bruce Willis.

Also gotta see Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter, Spider Man, Batman, Total Recall and a few others.

I’m a summer movie girl too.

Did you see they’re remaking Red Dawn. With Chris Hemsworth?

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

I saw that, Lori! With North Koreans parachuting into Colorado instead of Soviets and Cubans.

Your movie list looks a lot like mine, girlfriend!!

  4. Deb Marlowe says:

LOVED The Avengers. Your list is very similar to mine. I haven’t been this interested in a movie season in a long time!

Lori–I heard about Red Dawn, but not about Chris H.! Yum.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

Wasn’t it amazing, Deb? My family still said I was a geek for saying we should “assemble” at the movie theater. *g*

  5. Amanda says:

I’ve so totally enjoyed watching the Marvel movies–Thor, Iron Man, etc, only I usually wait until they’re out on video. When Star Trek came out (two? three?) years ago, I got such good recommendations from people about how good the movie was that I dragged the family to it. Big Mistake! My kids had never seen anything but Disney on the big screen, and they were scared witless the whole time. But, we’re going to see The Avengers on the big screen. They did ok when we saw Thor last year. DH isn’t into Battleship, so we’ll wait for the video. I like the big blockbusters more than I like the dramas of fall. When I watch a movie, I want to be entertained, not given something to think about….

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

I’m the same way, Amanda — entertain me!

  6. Freshechelle says:

Hysteria – saw the trailer months ago and it looks like nothing else.

Apparently, you got all my action/superhero movie mojo ‘coz I got none.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

That’s okay, Fresh. It leaves more for me.

  7. Angela says:

I will hopefully see the avengers. Will probably buy it. As for the others on your list I don’t think so. I generally buy movies and view them at home.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

I can do that for most movies, Angela, but that’s what I love about the summer blockbusters — they show better on that big screen.

  8. AmyS says:

I am looking forward to seeing Snow White and the Huntsmen, Prometheus, The Bourne Legacy (although, I wish it were with Matt Damon), Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter and Madagascar 3. Hopefully, I can make it to see at least 3 of them.

Haven’t seen The Avengers. I usually stay away from the big budget summer action movies.

I won’t be seeing What To Expect When Your Expecting. The trailers look horrible. Also, won’t be seeing Rock of Ages. I am allergic to Tom Cruise.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

I know what you mean about Tom Cruise, Amy. ‘Nuff said. *g*

  9. Kelly Ryan Watson says:

I’m not a big movie person, but I will see the Avengers. Snow White and the Huntsman is on my list too. Other than that give me a good book and I am happy!

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

And that’s why we love you, Kelly.

  10. Julia London says:

I have been so busy I haven’t seen the lineup of movies. So thanks, Suzie. I would love to see anything with a Hemsworth in it…except maybe a Nicholas Sparks movie. But give me action and a manly chest and I am there.

  11. Barbara Samuel says:

I’m so behind on my movies, but I really want to see Snow White.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

The trailers at least look really good, don’t they, Barbara?

  12. Claudia Welch says:

Of course I’ve seen The Avengers! I saw it opening day and it was fantastic!! Didn’t you find it amazing how the writers had to deal with 4 main characters and no one got short-changed? Stellar bit of writing, managing that trick. Yup, stayed through the credits. Loved the ‘secret’ ending!

I plan to avoid the movies you’re avoiding, though I do like Seth Rogan’s laugh. ;)

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

      I knew you would, Claudia!

Yeah, I like his laugh, too — like I like dental surgery. *g*

    2. Kristina says:

I was impressed by the writing for this movie. Let’s face it, a lot of action movies don’t have much plot. I’ve been impressed by the writing and acting in all the movies leading up to this one as well.

  13. Julie says:

We are going to see The Avengers this weekend, and I’m SO excited! I can’t wait!

I actually saw the trailer for Hysteria and found it hysterically funny, so I can’t wait for that one either.

Also looking forward to Snow White and the Huntsman, Battleship and GI Joe (for the reasons you mentioned–I love The Rock and I love Taylor Kitsch, too). We will probably go to see MIB3, too. Josh Brolin looks amazing as a young K! Dark Shadows looks so silly, and being a Burton film, it likely is. I’ll probably still see it anyway. ;)

I’d have to say, you couldn’t pay me to go see Prometheus…I don’t do scary. :[ That was why I didn’t see the most recent Daniel Radcliffe one either, and I was curious about his acting in it, but not curious enough to go to a scary one. I don’t do haunted houses, etc. either. If you scare me, I hit first, ask questions later…. ;)

I tell you though, one of the main ones I’m excited about this year is supposed to come out in December… The Hobbit. :D I can’t wait for that one. Many great actors in that one. Love Luke Evans lately–he’s fantastic!

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

I’m a big Taylor Kitsch fan too, Julie! I thought “John Carter” was great — too bad nobody else went to see it. Sigh.

      1. Julie says:

I know! I really liked it… Of course, I had never read the books, so I actually took the time to research it before we went. The hub and I loved it. I think it was Disney’s marketing that prevented it from doing well, plus if they had actually called it John Carter of Mars or something like that, it might have garnered more attention.

Loved him in Wolverine, too–that one was just full of hot lookin’ men. ;) Oh, and The Covenant–not sure if you saw that one. My daughter roped me into watching that one. The premise of that one was good, although it was a bit cheesy. Lots of pretty men though. ;)

  14. Kristina says:

    1) The Avengers – We saw it Sunday. We don’t usually go to movies opening weekend, so are completely unused to the crowds. It was worth it, though. Wow. I particularly loved the new Bruce Banner AKA the Hulk. I thought he did a fabulous job. We are a big family of super hero fans, so we have watched more movies in the theater the last two years than we have in the previous 12 years!

    4) Battleship – Also want to see this in the theater. We’re big into these type of movies as well.

    6) Snow White and the Huntsman – I want to see this, but I’ll wait until it’s out on DVD

8 ) G.I. Joe: Retaliation – We love G.I. Joe. We even call our two younger sons “the Joes.”

Movies I will NOT be seeing this summer.

Anything that’s not an action movie. My husband plans to see Prometheus without us. I love these kinds of movies, but then I have nightmares.

I really prefer not to do drama of any kind. I go to the movies as a form of escapism, not to be confronted with more reality.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

I know what you mean, Kristina. I’m not a Mark Ruffalo fan, but he was terrific as Bruce Banner.

  15. amy o'neal says:

i can not wait to go see the avengers! i love me some chris hemsworth yummy. he looked good in the star trek movie too. still trying to decide if i like him with short or long hair? but that chest of his is nice too :)

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

amy – I think you have your Chris’s mixed up. Chris Pine is Captain Kirk, and Chris Hemsworth is Thor. Oh, and Chris Evans is Captain America. You know, there are some fine-looking Chris’s out there. *g*

      1. amy o'neal says:

no this was kirks father who was in the movie for the first 20 minutes or so. he sacrificed himself to save kirk and his mom :)

        1. Suzanne Enoch says:

OMG, you’re right! I bow to you. *g*

  16. Sheridan says:

I’m going to the Avengers tonight!!! :D All that superhero eye candy on one screen? I’m in.

Since I seem to be totally out of touch with what is coming up, I am glad you listed them out here.. now I have an idea of what I am going to see.

While I like all kinds of movies, I do love a good superhero action flick. (I just wish all of them were good. hehe)

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

That’s why I’m here, Sheridan. Glad I could help. 8)

  17. Madeline Hunter says:

I plan to see the Avengers. It seems like a “must see”. I may even see it in 3D. Hysteria sounds hysterical, and I am counting on the Brits to do it up perfectly. I can’t get into Depp’s look in Dark Shadows, but I will probably just trust JD to pull the movie off.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

I didn’t see it in 3D the first time, but I figure will do for the next viewing. Just to get the complete experience.

    2. Kristina says:

I have to say that I don’t think this was one that’s a must see in 3D. The 3D was good, but not outstanding.

  18. dbrown3400 says:

I especially want to see the Avengers but DD#2 says I’ll be lost because I’ve not seen the movies leading up to it. She says the previous ones all dovetail into this one. What do you think, Suzie, will I be totally confused or can I just sit back and enjoy the fun?

I’d love to see Dark Shadows just to compare it to the TV version. Johnny Depp looks like a hoot in his makeup. I’m with you on Adam Sandler and Seth Rogan. Don’t care for them at all.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

I think you’d be fine, Donna. Really all you need to know is that in one of the previous movies our heroes came across a non-terrestrial power source that scientists have been trying to figure out how to use.

  19. LilMissMolly says:

I’ll definitely see Avengers, but haven’t seen it yet. I tend to like to see these types of blockbusters on the week after it’s opening because there are fewer crowds. Cerebral movies are OK, but I have to be in the mood for it.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

I love the crowds, LilMissMolly — as long as I can still get a good seat. I refuse to sit in the first row where I can count the pores on the actors’ faces. *g*

  20. Janae says:

I LOVED Avengers and must see it, again. Soooo many good one-liners throughout the entire movie

I’ll be watching most the of the movies you listed. Lucky me, I get to take 8 or 9 11 and 12 yo boys to see Men in Black III because that’s what my ds wants to do for his birthday. Of course, if he had told us that he wanted to do that in March, we could have gotten them all crew t-shirts. Instead, they’ll be getting crew t-shirts for The Amazing Spiderman (which is a REALLY cool shirt. I, even, got one for myself.). We’ll be seeing The Amazing Spiderman, too, because my dh is a comic book collector (only the old stuff – Golden and Silver Age comic books).

We’ll probably see Brave, too, since it’s animated. Although, I can’t really figure out the story. In many ways from the trailer, it feels like the girl version of How to Train Your Dragon. But I swear you slap the Pixar name on it, and everybody will see it.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

You make me SO jealous, Janae, you have no idea. 8)

  21. colinfirthfan says:

I loved Avengers. Want to see it again! Also want to see the new Johnny Depp movie. Looks quite funny.
Battleships looks soo bad, I am going to wait for the dvd.
I will definitely be going for MIB 3.

    Prometheus looks interesting.

Janae, I want to see Brave too. It looks fun.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

Yeah, I’m going to see “Dark Shadows” this Friday. And I’m glad I’m not the only want who wants another look at the Avengers, colinfirthfan!

  22. Chris Bails says:

I do want to see the Avengers. I also want to see Snow White & the Huntsmen. The movie I am dying to see is Magic Mike. This is the male stripper movie with one gorgeous cast, especially Joe Manganiello(yummy Alcide from True Blood), Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer. I do also want to take my kids to the new Ice Age movie.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

Just don’t take the kids to the stripper movie, Chris. *g* And I’ve already been told by my nephew that we’ll be going to see “Ice Age” and “Madagascar III”. And he wants to see “Brave”, too, which I think is awesome.

  23. Rachel Gibson says:

I wait for movies to come out on bluray. I’m looking forward to The Hunger Games to come out on bluray. But . . . I actually did go to the movie theater to see One For The Money.

    1. Suzanne Enoch says:

Oh, dear. How did that go, Rachel? I couldn’t bring myself to go see it, but I’ll probably be buying it on DVD.

  24. Diane Sallans says:

I hope to see Avengers next week when I visit my nephew.
All the rest of what you listed to see look great – tho I’m not familiar with Prometheus.
One other movie I want to see is ‘The Best Erotic Marigold Hotel’ because it has such a great cast.

  25. Susan Mallery says:

I will probably *not* go to see Piranha 3DD. Which, evidently, is a sequel. I completely missed the original, Piranha 3D.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World looks intriguing. I’ll put that one on my list.

  26. Karen Hawkins says:

Loooooved the Avengers! Action, humor, sexy guys, more sexy guys — did I mention there were a LOT of sexy guys? What’s not to love?

  27. flip says:

Definitely look forward to Hysteria. It was written by a married couple in my valley, Teton County, Idaho. Also, want to see Dark Shadows.
On the Avengers movie, my 22 year old was all excited about seeing the midnight showing. She posted on fb, “Jason has been wearing his Captain America t-shirt all day. I am super duper excited.” Cracked me with the double entendre. She was not amused when I pointed it out.

  28. Sabrina Jeffries says:

I hardly ever make it to the movies in a theater, unless it’s with Nick (we saw Pirates this weekend–it was very cute), but I do want to see Johnny Depp in Dark Shadows, even though I never watched the series.

I want to see the Avengers, but not before I see Iron Man. Yes, I’m a bit behind on movies. *G*

  29. evlqn says:

Your list is pretty much my list on both counts, add anything Cruise to the “Not it this lifetime” column and we are good. I haven’t liked one of his movies in years.

I loved the original Red Dawn but I am willing to give the remake a chance. Chris is adorable, what am I going to do?

I wish I had taken a blankie to Alien, it scared the vinegar right out of me. The ads for it were brilliant and we really didn’t know what to expect so when the kids wanted to see it we said “Sure!” & off we toddled. My youngest was 4 @ the time so I covered his eyes when the creature started out of Hurd’s chest. The entire place heard my ds shouting “No! no! Let me see!!” Horror is still his favored genre.

  30. Jen B. says:

I am a serious moviegoer so there are lots that I will see so I am going to focus on the ONE coming up that will break all of my rules. I am going to see Prometheus on opening day at the fancy movie theater close to my home. I will even buy the stupid, overpriced popcorn and soda because IT’S PROMETHEUS! And, the best part of all, my friend is taking the day off work to see it with me!!! Yippee!!

  31. TinaF says:

Want to see The Avengers, but not in 3D.

Debating about the new GI Joe.

Do not think there is anything else I want to see.

  32. Mary Preston says:

THE AVENGERS tops my list. It looks amazing.
