I have a new obsession. I’ve had it for awhile, now – since I watched the first episode of “Game
of Thrones” on HBO. What a bunch of conniving, back-biting, side-stabbing sons of…guns these people are. But at the same time, it’s just awesome to watch. There are quotes aplenty that I love, like “when you play the game of thrones, you win or you die”. Or “the things I do for love”.
For those of you who don’t or haven’t watched it, it’s based on a series of books by George R.R. Martin, set in an imaginary realm occupied by knights and nomads and dragons and a giant wall of ice separating the “civilized” lands from the wilds where giants and
wights (zombies) dwell.
I will admit that I’d never read the books before I began watching the show, though at the moment I’m halfway through the second book and trying to catch up before the end of the second season. My two favorite characters are Tyrion Lannister (played by Peter Dinklage), a clever dwarf who has a much stronger sense of morality than the rest of the members of his family, and Arya Stark, a nine-year-old girl on the run from a great number of people who want her captured or dead.
I love all the twists and turns of the series, the way you never know if the person you’re rooting for at the
beginning of the hour will still be alive at the end of it. And I love that there are also characters I hate, ones I can’t wait to see get theirs. Oh, I hope that happens. (You hear me, King Joffrey?) Of course it doesn’t hurt that there are some awfully good-looking men involved, either — even though some of them deserve (or have already had) a gruesome end.
Do you watch “Game of Thrones”? Have you read any of the books? Is there a show that you watch obsessively every week, or a series of books you think would make an awesome TV series?
