Search for the Perfect Ringtone

Do you ever hear someone’s ringtone and wonder just who is calling them based on the song?  I suppose not everyone spends valuable time searching for the perfect ringtone to fit those people who call them often enough to warrant their own tone.  But I do.  I like to know who’s calling without having to pick up the phone and look at the caller ID.  The ringtone will also tell me if I need to run and grab the phone (one of the kids!) or let it go to voice mail (depends on the day and my mood).

I wish there was a ringtone that would signal telemarketers.  The best I’ve been able to do is program my phone to play “Whooooo are you?  Woo-woo.  Woo-woo” for any number that doesn’t have a personal ringtone.

Oldest son–sports nut–has “Centerfield” for his tone.  You know “Put me in, coach, I’m ready to play.  Today.”  Youngest son gets “Sweet Child of Mine” because Mom often needs to be reminded.  Sweet.  Child.

I think I’ve mentioned before that IV gets Trisha Yearwood’s “How Do I Live Without You?”  Just ’cause.

My agent’s tune is “Rockin’ Robin” and when my cousin who is more of a sister calls I hear the Beatles “Michelle.”

I often wonder what my ringtone would be.  It would be nice if my kids chose “Amazing Grace” but that ain’t happenin’.  Probably more along the lines of the parental squack from the Peanuts cartoons.

IV often sings “You are my Sunshine to Me” when I snarl at him.  Always makes me laugh.  He will also sing “Cruella DeVille.”  I guess it’s better than the Wicked Witch of the West tune.  A little.  ”You Light Up my Life” would be nice.

Do you have ringtones for the special callers in your life?  What are they?  Why?

If you could chose your own ringtone, what would it be?

  1. E.R. says:

I have those ringtones that I download and assign them to certain people. As to what they are, I hadn’t memorized them.

“The Lazy Song” by Bruno Mars would be my ringtone. And/Or my own ‘lazy’ song that I would make up…except I don’t like my voice when I hear it. Weird, right?

    1. LoriHandeland says:

The Lazy Song would work for me right now. Puppy got me up at 5. Snooorrrrre.

    2. Barbara Samuel says:

Haha..the Lazy Song is my younger son.

  2. Nickie Fleming says:

I guess I’m old fashioned in this sense. I do have a cell phone, but it’s (almost) never on, as I mostly use it to call in case of emergency.
My desk phone does have an ordinary ‘ring-ring’ tone, and I don’t think you can choose the tones there. But I have caller display, so when telemarketers call, I just let it ring…
When I could pick a tone for my desk phone, it would be the tune which is typical for my home town: that of the song that accompanies our Horse Bayard when it makes its tour around the town, every ten years. It’s very old and you only have to hear the first notes to sing along.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

I never used to use my cell either but slowly everyone else used theirs only and now we only have cells.

  3. Freshechelle says:

My chattiest caller got The Smiths “Big Mouth Strikes Again” until she found out.

My NYC area friends have “Fairytale of New York”, a remnant of when I lived elsewhere.

    When I managed stores, my stores got Tom Jones’ “Sugar Daddy” because they were the folks who enabled me to live large ;

I’m thinking as a Michelle, I’ve been remiss in not insisting my calling circle make The Beatles song my ringtone.

Had a colleague who used “Take This job and Shove It” for the company pres.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

You have some very creative tones. Love your colleague’s. I’ve had that job.

  4. KellyProellocks says:

With New Guy I have assigned the awesome Phil Collins song “You’ll be in my heart.” I chose it because I am doing the whole madly in love thing. I know I have a song assigned to Sci Fi Guy and I think that it is Summer of 69 by Bryan Adams. If it is then I chose it because he is a bit of an 80s music nut like me. If I were to have a song chosen for me, I would hope that it were something like “When I see you smile” by Bad English or Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” mainly because both songs are amazing and are moving.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

Ah, the whole madly in love thing. Lucky you.

  5. CateS says:

Well, I’m not a techie … but I finally did change my ring tone to not the standard… you know the one that when it rings, 5 people in your area start searching for their cells!!

    1. LoriHandeland says:

I still search for mine when that one rings, even though I know better.

  6. Amanda says:

DH gets the Looney Toones theme song. I can hear it from almost anywhere in the house, and well, one never knows what is going to happen when DH calls, kind of like being in one of the old cartoons, but in a good way. This backfires when the kids are actually watching cartoons and I can’t tell the difference between the tv and my phone.

My MIL has me as “Fur Elise” by Beethoven for me as her ringtone, and I think that is just perfect for me.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

I’ve been having the same problem with the songs. Either I think my phones ringing but it’s a radio or Muzak. Or I ignore it for the same reason and it is ringing.

  7. Kelly Ryan Watson says:

The only ringtone I have right now is “Consider Me Gone,” by Reba. I just love that song! Its one of those if you don’t like me, or love me, for who I am then I am out of here songs. I have to admit that I do not get many phone calls though. Once in a great while. Texting is a whole nother issue!

    1. LoriHandeland says:

I think I could set mine up to ring differently for each text but I haven’t gone that far over the edge yet.

  8. Sandi in OH says:

I don’t think I can even program a song for each person. I have a dumb phone which means I can use it as a phone and take pictures on it. I don’t want to do anything else with it. The ring tone though is George Strait’s I Cross My Heart from his movie, Pure Country. I always take it with me but leave it in the truck or car. The other day we went to Sam’s Club and I left it in the truck. When I opened the truck door, I couldn’t figure out why the truck was playing music. A duh moment.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

      Gotta love George!

  9. ladydawgfan says:

I have a slew of different ones for the family:

My moms is a loud alarm that says “your mother is calling. Do not panic, stop what you are doing and answer the phone!”. It gets laughs.

My dads is “Fanfare for the Common Man,” perfect for him.

My Dr sis has a cut from the three Stooges as her tone so when she calls, you hear, “Calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard.” And it repeats until I pick up. It’s hilarious.

My BIL has Reveille as his tone from his time in the Army.

My eldest brother is a train engineer. I have an actual train horn for his ring tone. It sound pretty awesome when he calls. Along, the same lines, my nieces tone is a police siren since she is with emergency services. I thought I was so clever until she called me while I was driving. I almost pulled over for a phantom police car until I realized it was my phone going off.

My main tone is my college fight song (Hail State), the tone for text messages is the,Tarzan yell which gets a LOT of laughter and missed phone calls sent to voicemail have my phone telling me, “What we have here is a failure to communicate!” which had one lady laughing so hard I though she would hurt herself.

Most of these can be found at Phonezoo dot com, which I have found the easiest place to download tones (you can also make your own from your own songs).

    1. LoriHandeland says:

OMG, those are great! The mom one is priceless. Thanks for sharing the link.

  10. Pesky says:

    Oh those are awesome.

I’d love to do the whole ringtone thing, but I’ve found that I choose songs that I like so I start enjoying the song and then it hits me…

Oh! I should be answering that!

    and it’s too late.

So just a regular old time phone ring for everyone. I’m trained like Pavlov’s dog to answer that.

My ringtone…well My Guy has me on to Neon Trees, “Everybody Talks”

The Bombshell has me to “Little Sister”

The Squid Has me to “Marsupial” a song we jam out to when I’m driving him to Hockey Tournaments.

The Brain is like me, regular phone ring.

Hewhoshallnotbenamed just changed me to “Ashokan Farewell”

    1. LoriHandeland says:

I’ve been known to stand there thinking “Oh, I love that song,” then bobble the phone to get to it before it goes to voicemail.

    2. Janae says:

Everybody Talks – that’s a good one. I could use that for 3 of my sisters. Only one of them would think it’s funny. I think it’s going to be her ringtone.

      1. Pesky says:

LOL…well you gotta have a sense of humor about ringtones. One of my friends has his phone quack when I call and answers it, Hello Quackers…because my last name rhymes with gander.

  11. JenG says:

I used to have all sorts of people on different ring tones. I am sure DH does but since I had to switch phones cause I broke mine, I only have one special one. That is for when DH calls. His is the Eagles fight song (philadelphia football) Fly Eagles Fly.. On the Road to Victory… Etc.

Once I finally upgrade from a dumb phone, I will download more ringtones. Verizon is making changes and making data sort of more afordable so we might actually upgrade!!! YAY!

I think DH has me (or at one time did) at Rag Doll by Aerosmith.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

When I got a new phone it took me a long time to fiddle with the ringtones. I wish that would all transfer over but noooo.

      1. ladydawgfan says:

Save your tones as sounds to your memory card instead of as ringtones. Then use them as ringtones as needed. Once they are saved as sounds, anything that is not copyrighted can be transferred with a new phone, although I found that almost all of my sounds transferred whether or not they were copyrighted. BTW, this handy dandy little tidbit was given to me by my local Verizon salesman when I had my first phone and lost most of my ringtones on the transfer to the new phone.

        1. LoriHandeland says:

          Didn’t know that. Thanks!

  12. Barbara Samuel says:

My main ring is Bach’s Cello Suite #1 Prelude. I get compliments on it a lot.

My fav is the text as telegraph sound. It makes me chuckle every time.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

      Telegraph sound! Great idea.

  13. RobinRBL says:

For my dh, I have Jimmy Wayne singing “Belongs to you” (Every smile that lights my face, every tear drop, every trace, every secret hidden place, belongs to you). Love that song, and it fits my pookie. ;)

For my sister in law I downloaded “Rejoice” by Israel and New Breed cuz she rejoices and she makes me rejoice and she is a joy.

For most everyone else, I have Bon Jovi’s “Whatdya got if you ain’t got love”.

I also have Baby Bash, instrumental version of Baby I’m Back, but I go back and forth with the Bon Jovi song or this one.

At Christmas I like Harry Connick Jr “This Christmas” (his sexy voice is awesome!)

I’m not sure what a good ring tone for me would be. Maybe “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina (and the Whales is it?) or “Roam” by the B-52′s. I also like Echo and Bunnymen “Sugar Kisses” but only for my honey to have that one for me.

I’d like to have the Scotsman song by John Denver too. LOL

    1. LoriHandeland says:

Walking on Sunshine is a great one. Really makes a picture.

And your sis in law sounds lovely just by her ringtone. :)

  14. Rachel Gibson says:

For years my ringtone was Paperback Writer by the Beatles. I got tired of it so now it just rings.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

      Good one!

  15. Angela says:

I don’t have a ringtone for my life. I do have ringtones for my cell. I have Pachelbel’s Canon (middle part), the Theme from Star Wars and the Theme from Mission Impossible and the original ring. I rotate them when I feel like it. No more room left on my cell so that’s it for the ringtones.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

Mission Impossible would be a catchy tune for someone.

  16. Claudia Welch says:

LOL No, no ring tone. I can’t even program my phone for voice mail. Maybe if I got an iphone, I’d be able to figure it out. Hmm.

Anyway, I’d like my life ring tone to be “Don’t Rain on My Parade” because so many people seem to want to, and cut it out!

    1. LoriHandeland says:

A fabulous tune and a good choice. Can’t believe you haven’t succumbed to the iphone as much as you play in the Apple store!

    2. Pesky says:

Honestly, don’t you wanna give those people a dollar and tell em to go buy a life. Sheese… Hate when people put a harsh on my morning mellow.

  17. Haley says:

My dad used to sing “Cruella Deville” to my mom when she was cranky too! Cracked her up everytime. :) I am borning–with just one ringtone for everyone. However, youngest brother just turned 16, and now has a set of wheels. Older younger brother figured out a way to record everyone’s voice and uploaded that to Youngest’s phone–so there’s now a personalized ring with my our voice for each of us.

My mom’s is hilarious she sings hers to the tune of the Mark’s mom from the RENT soundtrack…”DAMON, this is your mot-HER! Why don’t you ans-WER! Unless of course, you’re dri-VING….if you’ve missed curfew, you are in trou-BLE! Be a good b-OY, and CALL YOUR MOTHER!!!

One of my sister’s made her’s to the tune of A LETTER FROM CAMP:
    “Hello Damon
    this is your sister
    I am calling,
    to say “Hey Mister”.
    If you don’t,
    pick up the phone
I’ll leave my daughters with you and not come home!”

Best thing yet–he’s actually left them all on there. I thought for sure he’d be too “cool” for our ringtones. :)

    HAPPY FRIDAY!

    1. LoriHandeland says:

      Love the sister tune!

  18. Jeanne Disney says:

I do have assigned ring tones – for my sister – Next Whisky Bar by Door – only cause she loves the Doors; for nephew I have Star Wars theme cause he is addicted to SW. Oldest niece is theme from Law & Order; Best friend is the opening tones from the 70s tv show Emergency cause we use to love that show.

My nieces and nephew have the Wicked Witch of the West song on their phone for their mother :-) love it.

    1. Jeanne Disney says:

Oh and my ring tone – Beatles – I get by with a little help from my friends – since I am always the person that people turn to when they want help. I know my sister has something funny for me but I don’t remember what it is.

      1. LoriHandeland says:

Beatles have a lot of good ones.

  19. Sheridan says:

Right now, my phone is not set to anything more than my ring tone of Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies. For a while it was a bit from Avenue Q “The Internet is for Porn” but I kept getting dirty looks from people – I think they felt I was outing them or something. ;)

I assigned some semi-sinister ring tone to Gollum on Geezer’s phone so he would know when she was on one of her calling frenzies or if it was someone else. I was hoping to put the Jaws theme on there, but did not feel like figuring out a BlackBerry for it.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

Oh, Jaws theme. I need to use that. But for whom . . .? Hmm. Thinking.

  20. dbrown3400 says:

On my old phone, I had Leaann Rimes, “Got Nothin’ Better to Do” as my primary ring tone with “Remember When” by Alan Jackson as the tone for the girls. I would pick this same one again. They had “I’m Already There” by Lonestar for me until they got tired of the twang. They’re not into country music. I would have the Lonestar song as my ring tone if I could pick one as the incoming on other people’s phones. It’s my favorite song.

Now I have this smart phone that I have yet to figure out all the features. Most people get Ravel’s Bolero, or a soundalike, while others get some dipsy little tune. The problem is my 3G isn’t strong in this area all the time, so I’ve had trouble downloading and connecting to the Internet. Ergo, no special ring tones. The map shows my area to be covered but I haven’t yet called and faced the aggravation of one of their service calls to discuss all my problems with the phone.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

I had the same deal with the map and reality.

  21. Suzanne Enoch says:

Awesome topic, Lori!! In my contemporary series my American heroine chooses the James Bond theme as the ringtone for her British hero. It makes things so fun.

My sister’s ringtone for me is the theme from Star Wars. Don’t know where she got that idea. *g*

    1. LoriHandeland says:

Yeah, no clue about that Star Wars theme. Makes NO sense.

    2. Becky Spires says:

Love that series. It cracked me up when I read that.

  22. Kathleen O says:

I have special ringtones for my family and friends… For three of my brother’s who once all lived together, I had The Good, The Bad and The Ugly theme… I thought it funny, but not so much them.
For my oldest brother, I have “Moves Like Jagger not because he likes Maroon 5, but because Mick and the boys are is all time fav group… So I thought it was appropriate..
For my BFF, I have “You’ll Never Walk Alone”… because we are always there for one another.. Another BFF, her is “Satistfaction” by the Rolling Stones… Well that is one of those you had to be there to understand..
My cousin and I both love Bon Jove, so her’s is It’s My Life..
Onen of my nieces is Your Somthing Special to me by George Straight..
I like the different ring tones, so that this way I can just know immediately who is call me without having to gaze at the display.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

I can hear The Good, the Bad and the Ugly theme right now. Do-do-do-do-doooooo!

  23. Janae says:

I got new phone about a month ago, but I have not had time to put in any ringtones. I’m getting some good ideas from today’s blog, though. I do know that my ringtone on my favorite sister’s phone is, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

We DO want to have fun!

  24. LouisaCornell says:

I am still working out the ringtones thing. God help me if I ever get a smart phone. I may blow a gasket!

My nephew is the king of the Iphone! He has rings for everyone.

His ringtone for me is “Who let the dogs out!”

For his Mom he has one that says “It’s yo MA MA! It’s yo MA MA! Pick up the phone, boy! It’s yo MA MA!” I cracked up the first time I heard it.

For his Dad has “Money, Money, Money, MO NEY!” (Theme from The Apprentice) Nephew’s a junior in college. No further explanation needed.

For his sister he has Travis Tritt’s “T-R-O-U-B-L-E !”

For his Nana (my Mom) he has “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groban. Needless to say he adores his Nana.

I do have a ringtone for my best friend. It is Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries. If you knew her, you’d know it fits her perfectly! LOL

A ringtone for me? Hmm. Probably Der Holle Rache from Mozart’s Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) It is the major aria from my operatic debut and always brings back fond memories of that night. AND it is about an evil queen vowing vengeance on all who do not do her bidding. Sounds like me at work. LOL

    1. LoriHandeland says:

An evil queen and those who do not do her bidding. I LIKE!

I wonder if I could steal my sons’ phones and program that Yo mama tune.

  25. Pamiam says:

I have James Bond for my husband, A boogie woogie for my daughter (she used to be the Fraggle Rock song) and Cowboy Casanove by Carrie Underwood for my son. I have one on my phone that says “asshole calling” but haven’t been brave enough to assign it to anyone.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

      James Bond. Very cool.

  26. Paula says:

Now I have my new phone i have assigned ringtones to a few people. My DH has formula 1 uk theme for his mobile and adams family for his work number. I have a scottish friend and have Scotland the brave for him and a star wars mad friend has star wars cantina. I am still sorting ringtones out for other people.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

      Addams Family is always catchy.

  27. Susan Mallery says:

What a fun post! Fun to think about. Someone recently told a story of a UPS man who was in a busy professional office delivering a package, when suddenly his phone started playing “I Like Big Butts.” Lesson learned – your phone may ring when you’re around people you don’t know. Plan accordingly. LOL

I guess for the ringtone I hope people would use for me, it would also depend on whose phone was ringing. I’d want my husband to use something romantic, but I’d be uncomfortable if anyone else did the same. How about “Summer Lovin’” in honor of my summer Fool’s Gold books? ;)

    1. LoriHandeland says:

Summer Lovin’ is perfect for this time of year and the books! There are a lot of good Grease tunes.

  28. Madeline Hunter says:

omg, I did not ever know you could assign different ringtones to different people. . . . I am *so* untechie it even amazes me. . .

    1. LoriHandeland says:

I didn’t know until the new phone. I really like it.

  29. Marlo H. says:

I have Here Without You by 3 Doors Down for my husband because he travels all the time.

Ginny for my daughter because she is a huge Harry Potter fan.

During the holidays, I put on Holly Jolly Christmas because it’s just so cheery!

My husband has two ringtones for me: my favorite one is on the cell, it’s an exerpt from Hart to Hart, “This is Mrs. H. She’s gorgeous!” etc… I love it!

    1. Rhiannon Rowland says:

I used to have Hedwig’s Theme on my old cell, love Harry Potter!

      1. Marlo H. says:

My son is working very hard to learn Hedwig’s Theme on his violin. It sounds awesome!

    2. LoriHandeland says:

I always want to use Christmas music at Christmas and forget. This year!

  30. Rhiannon Rowland says:

I am in the dark ages with my cell and it just has the standard rings on it. I play the wedding march for our home phone, my husband is disabled and most of the time he stays home while I go shopping, etc., so if the home phone is ringing me then it is usually him calling. I think it would be easy for someone else to pick a ringtone for me, Rhiannon! Though I guess not everyone is a Fleetwood Mac fan, but I am.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

      I am! Love that song.

  31. side effects of 5 htp says:

Thank you, I’ve recently been searching for info about this topic for a while and yours is the greatest I’ve found out so far. However, what in regards to the conclusion? Are you certain about the supply?|What i do not understood is in reality how you’re not really much more neatly-favored than you may be now. You are so intelligent.

    1. Pallavi Subramanian says:

      Heeee…. Spambot!!!!

      1. LoriHandeland says:

Too bad it’s spam because I am so intelligent. ;)

  32. Kretch1 says:

I would say, the lazy song, by Bruno Mars, Cuz I just want to stay home, sit on the patio and read. Life is good.

  33. SuzyQ says:

If anyone calls me from work, AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” plays.

  34. Antoine Viesselman says:

5-htp can really help alleviate the symptoms of depression but be advised that this food supplement have some side effects too. ,.’*’

    Regards http://www.healthmedicinelab.com“>

  35. Belle Millimaki says:

I always take 5-HTP supplements because they can replenish your serotonin levels. *

  36. Gabriel Boynes says:

5-HTP is a natural alternative to anti-anxiety medications. It can also be useful in the treatment of mild to moderate depression. It is a popular alternative to medications due to the limited side effects and fairly easy tolerance most people demonstrate with this compound.-

Due to Mt. Olympus technical restraints, we've implemented a maximum 1200 character response length. If you have a problem with this, call Zeus. It's all his fault!
