Website Faves

I love the Internet.  Every day I find a new, cool website to add to my old favorites.  Today we’re going to share and share alike our favorite places to waste time and buy things.

My newest time waster is:

http://triviatoday.com/

You do have to register, but then you receive a trivia question by email each day.  My mind is a storehouse of useless information.  I rock Jeopardy.  I even have a trivia app on my iphone so I can play against myself and rack up useless points.

I find this website useful for my books and for discovering foreign curse words.

http://translate.google.com/

Here’s another great website I’ve used a lot lately since I’ve been writing western historical romance again.

http://www.etymonline.com/

This has also been useful and enlightening

along with this

And this is always fun whenever I start a new book

I use this site alot when I’m writing my Full Moon Club newsletter

https://sites.google.com/site/browarddrumcircle/Home/links/fullmoon/fullmooninfo

Those are my favorite websites at the moment.  What are some of yours?

Here, author websites and yahoo news.

    1. LoriHandeland says:

      Gotta have that yahoo news.

  2. KellyProellocks says:

At the moment I am loving eBay because I have been picking up some wonderful bargains there, I also love the iPhone and HTC app Slotomania which is good for chewing up an hour or so of time. I love this website like TinaF and it has become a part of my daily ritual so it isn’t a time waster at all. Then there is Facebook, oh beautiful, wonderful Facebook without which I can not see what people are celebrating or ranting about everyday. I really need to find something to help me Zen because my stressing is doing stupid things to my body and it won’t be helping me with being weaned off of my antidepressants for when I fall pregnant (thank God I will be off of them until the first trimester is over and then I can think about going back on them – not that I am pregnant – yet but New Guy and I hope to fix that soon.)

    1. LoriHandeland says:

If you find something to help you Zen let me know.

  3. Freshechelle says:

Those are good ones, Lori. I generated the name Selena Bedgood – surely a name a lazy author would give to a soiled dove in a Western.

Sabrina sent her FB followers to an action movie title generator yesterday and I got The Duke of Conquest – a romance title to be sure.

I check out Uncle Walter’s Bad Romance Covers, Bergdorff Goodman’s Today’s Shoe and Colonial Williamsburg’s Daily Dispatch (these last 2 are Apps).

    1. LoriHandeland says:

Must take a look at Uncle Walter’s. Love stuff like that.

  4. Kathy says:

Facebook is an obsession. it’s sometimes the only daily social activity I get.
I love going to windows shop at thinkgeek for all the cool geekery.
loveandhisses is a sweet kitten love blog from a woman in alabama who fosters cats and kittens. cuteoverload led me there. yes I like cute baby animals.
cakewrecks and epbot are daily visits too. both by the same person.
    likecool is a gadgets magazine.
entertainmentweekly and tmz are my celeb news fixes.
scifimafia is my go to site for my fav tv and movies info.
I come here every day too. I may not post every subject, but I do read them!

    1. LoriHandeland says:

You must like LOL Cats too, yes? I look at that everyday as well.

      1. Kathy says:

I do. but not every day. it doesn’t grab me for some reason.

    2. Susan Mallery says:

I’m with you on Facebook, Kathy! I spend far too much time there, but I love it! You get a little bit of everything. News, entertainment, social interaction. Although I’m kind of mad at timeline still… wish they would do away with it.

      1. Lori Handeland says:

I hate that timeline thing too. Always forget to look at it.

        1. Susan Mallery says:

Me too! And it discourages people from posting on the page because it’s just not as visible. I used to have readers posting cute baby pics and pet pics all the time. They still do occasionally, but the number has gone down dramatically. And I *looooooove* cute baby pics and pet pics!!!! I want them back!!!!

          1. Lori Handeland says:

Exactly. I rarely get comments or postings anymore. Annoying.

  5. Claudia Welch says:

Ohmygosh, I am so boring! I use the web to get the news and look up movie reviews. That’s about it.

I like Dustin Putnam and Roger Ebert for movie reviews. They have completely separate sites, probably don’t know each other, but I like to read what each has to say since they’re always so opposed in their reviews. It’s even rare for them to review the same movies! Since their tastes are so divergent, I feel like I get a interesting take on the movie.

    themovieboy.com and rogerebert.com

    1. LoriHandeland says:

Thanks for those. I usually go to IMBD to look up what’s coming soon, but I don’t like their reviews.

  6. Julia London says:

I also confess to a Facebook addiction. I love Funny or Die, and Huffington Post for all the celebrity gossip.

    1. Lori Handeland says:

What did we do before Huffington Post?

  7. Julie says:

OY! I had a whole schpiel typed out and accidentally hit the keystrokes to take me back to my previous page!!! ARGH! Lost EVERYTHING. ppppbbbbtttt….

Oh well. Hopefully I can remember them all!

I love this site and I’m so glad that I found it. I check this one and The Pioneer Woman every day, even if I don’t post. While I have a FB, Twitter and Pinterest account, I don’t get on as much as I would like.

I look at Yahoo every day and check out all of the little news stories and movie trailers for upcoming things I want to see. I love reading the comments on some of the articles too–there are some–um–ODD–people that post sometimes. Some of those people scare me. ;)

If you like games, I love http://www.friv.com and http://www.eastoftheweb.com/games. Friv has a lot of different types of games–puzzle, action, etc. The hub and I challenge each other’s scores on the Eight Letters game. That one is a lot of fun, but I think the site must be from the UK or something because they spell words differently sometimes and it can really throw you off. I also like Definetime.

    1. Lori Handeland says:

I’ve stopped reading comments on sites because, like you said, too many kooks. Just makes my blood pressure go up.

  8. Madeline Hunter says:

Huff Post; Slate; the Onion; weatherchannel.com; Rue la la and Ideeli (both flash sale sites where I mostly window shop and wish I were a size 6 so I could buy, buy, buy, then realize that not being a size 6 sure helps me balance the budget.) I use Google books a lot for research. I also use the photo stock sites for research, and ebay as well. I call it “research” but really I am just spending too much time noodling around :)

    1. Lori Handeland says:

I get the Ideeli email everyday. Sad. I know.

    2. Susan Mallery says:

      The Onion is hysterical!

    3. dbrown3400 says:

I just got a new pair of shoes from ideeli. Love them. MYHABIT and Zappos are other places I shop.

  9. Kelly Ryan Watson says:

Lets see…I come here and one other authors page daily. I do the facebook thing. I also do Pinterest, but I really limit my time there. I could probably hang there all day. I have also used google translate, sometimes for bad words also! I also try to go to transparent.com to hear an Irish word a day. I get strange looks from someone else in the house for that one!

Now, I don’t go to you tube often, but I am leaving a link here. This video always brings a smile to me.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVGzwj1A4QI&feature=related

    1. Lori Handeland says:

I can usually find something on Youtube to snicker about too. It’s insane what people put up there.

Go there and put hitler and the Packers into the search engine. I never laughed so hard in my life as when I watched the Divisional Playoffs rant.

      1. Kelly Ryan Watson says:

Haha, Lori. That just brought a smile to my face. That was good!

  10. Sheridan says:

    Hrm. In addition to Facebook

    Post Secret on Sunday mornings.

Craft Gawker for ideas of things I want to make when I finally get my crafty things unpacked from storage (though this is quieting down with the migration of people to Pinterest)

Overheard at the Office (and its sister sites) are always good for some fun.

and my new favorite: Texts from Dog. FUNNY! http://textfromdog.tumblr.com/

    1. Lori Handeland says:

Okay, now laughing butt off at texts from dog. That will be my new go to in the morning.

    2. Kelly Ryan Watson says:

Sheridan, textfromdog is awesome! I am laughing so hard my eyes are watering! Thanks :)

      1. Lori Handeland says:

Sent it to oldest son at work. He had to turn it off before someone heard him laughing.

        1. Sheridan says:

Yeah, I have turned a few heads from Guffawing Inappropriately when looking at it in public :D

          1. Kathy says:

yeah, you got me hooked on textfromdog the day you linked it on facebook.

  11. Liz B. says:

My favorite sites right now are epbot for geek girl info how-tos and stempunk goodness, Cake Wrecks for rediculously bad cakes and hilarious commentary about them, xkcd for cartoons (updated Mon, Wed, Fri), and slushpile hell (updated periodically, not daily)for hilarious literary query letter excerpts and commentary on them. Those, this site, and a few blogs keep me occupied online these days.

    1. Lori Handeland says:

I need to check out that slushpile site. Those are always good.

  12. Haley says:

Gotta love the web…it can be such an amazing time sucking hole (although a fun one).

My major current addiction: Pinterest. You can get lost in that particular time-suck for HOURS (and enjoy every minute)–then come up with all sorts of ideas that you never follow through on.

    Other sites I really like:
For the DIY Divas: Young House Love: http://www.younghouselove.com or Ana White’s DIY site: http://www.ana-white.com

    For book reviews: Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com

Food/Fun: Iowa Girl Eats: http://www.iowagirleats.com; The Pioneer Woman http://www.thepioneerwoman.com or Kath Eats Real Food: http://www.kerf.com

    Have a good one!

    1. Haley says:

      WHOOPS! Kath’s website is: http://www.katheats.com

      1. Lori Handeland says:

I haven’t gone onto Pinterest yet. I’m afraid that’ll suck away all my facebook time. ;)

        1. Madeline Hunter says:

I also am sitting on my hands regarding Pininterest. It is my kind of thing and I know if I go once I am going to be in big trouble.

  13. Debbie says:

I always tend to the horse site. Equine.com, equinenow.com etc. Anything that has to do with reading and books plus, of course, the Goddess Blogs. The pioneerwoman.com is a new one for me and pinterest is killing me because I tend to like a great deal of the romantic and ethereal impossibilities.

    1. Lori Handeland says:

The Pioneer Woman seems to be a popular site. Never gone to it. Off to see.

      1. Debbie says:

You should, she is married to her own Marlboro man. Very romantic!

          1. Kathy says:

I LURVE Pioneer woman! go to the fun section and check out her videos. the one where she embarrasses her Malboro man is very cute.

  14. Alisa says:

    http://www.cakewrecks.com/

and of course facebook and twitter

    1. Lori Handeland says:

Who snuck into my house and took the pictures of my cakes?

  15. JenM says:

Google translate can be so much fun. I just spent two months working in Norway and Sweden, so we were using it all the time, and some of those translations were fall off the chair funny. I love useless factoids so I must check out trivia today.

My favorite website for a good laugh is http://damnyouautocorrect.com (sorry, don’t know how to make that clickable). Anyone who texts on an iPhone will be familiar with it since we’ve all had our texts corrected by the program and then unintentionally sent them out because we didn’t pay attention before we hit the send button.

    1. Lori Handeland says:

Damn auto correct is right. Hate that thing.

  16. Olivia Kelly says:

I am completely addicted to Twitter. I use it ALL THE TIME. I’m “meh”about Facebook and Pinterest (where I just opened an account). I love Dictionary.com like a chubby cat loves cheese. I can spend an hour perusing the quote sites. I hardly ever quote any of the quotes, but I love to read them! I can also get sucked into websites like Zazzle and spend forever pricing funny t-shirts and mugs before I close the page, having bought NOTHING. ;)
I never read reviews for books or movies. I read back copy/blurbs, etc or watch a trailer and decide on my own. EVERY TIME I’ve taken a review into consideration, I regret it, lol!

    1. Lori Handeland says:

I just bought a Big Boy t-shirt off Zazzle. I worked there for 8 years. Never got a t-shirt.

  17. Cheri Champagne says:

I’m really in to Pinterest right now. It’s lots of fun! Of course I do Facebook, too, and I have my own blog, but basically it’s just this blog, FB and Pinterest.

    1. Cheri Champagne says:

I forgot to mention that I’ve also got my own website… http://www.cherichampagne.com :)

Oh, and I use the google translator, too! The novel I’m in the middle of writing has a man that speaks Spanish, so the translator works great for that.

    2. Lori Handeland says:

Yeah, I have a feeling Pinterest would consume me. Must. Avoid.

  18. Barbara O'Neal says:

(putting hands over ears) Do not tell me about places to fall into the far away lands of the Internet!! I didn’t hear you talk about trivia. I didn’t!

My obsession is all the news mags and travel sites. I can get lost reading travel blogs for hours and hours and hours.

  19. Pamiam says:

Facebook, TGB and Plotmonkeys are an everyday thing. Then there are a few I visit a couple times a week,Smart Bitches Trashy Books and Epic Fail. I will be checking out textfrom dog today. Sounds like it will be ab everyday site.

  20. z code system says:

Your means of describing everything in this post is genuinely fastidious,
every one be able to without difficulty be aware of
    it, Thanks a lot.
