The Soundtrack of My Life

I have been a very late adapter to the iPod movement. I finally got an iPod as a Christmas gift from Number Two Son, along with a hefty iTunes gift card, and then, because he knows me so well, he “did it” all for me. You know, those techy things that you have to do to set things up, showed me how to buy songs, and then was at my beck and call until I could do it on my own. Which took far longer than you’d think.

But now I’m in. I am living life to my own personal soundtrack.

Some background on me: When I was a teeny, tiny little girl, just a wee thing still in the playpen, my mom would park the playpen with me in it in front of the television while American Bandstand was on. I bopped and hopped, holding on to the rail of the playpen, a drooly grin on my baby face, rocking out to the rock and roll washing over every pore of my skin.

A rock and roll chick was born.

Fast forward to today: I love it all. I love rock music in all its many forms. Rock n’ roll, classic rock, hard rock, glam rock, punk rock, goth rock, pop rock, country rock, doper rock. I have it all on my iPod. I have my iPod on anytime I leave the house. I have the volume turned Very High. I Rock Out while standing in line at the post office, while shopping for cereal, while trying on shoes, while waiting in the dentist’s office, while watering the potted plants on the deck.

I am that woman. My hips swing, my head bobs, my shoulders keep time, and I sometimes do the air guitar. I am rocking out. I am also buying pasta. I am living life to own my personal soundtrack. I am happy. I make other people happy. People smile when they see me. They want to rock out with me. I don’t blame them.

What’s on your life soundtrack?

  1. Lori Handeland says:

I’m a classic rock girl, although the rock wasn’t classic when I started listening to it. My soundtrack kind of stops at the 90s. I blame having kids, which caused me to miss a lot of new music while listening to Barney. By the time I came up for air, I was too attached to Guns and Rose, Bon Jovi, the Eagles, Journey and REO to give them up.

    1. Claudia Welch says:

The kids really can be blamed for everything and it’s completely legit. I didn’t see more than 5 movies in the entire decade of the 80s–I missed John Hughes completely.

  2. Karen Hawkins says:

This week I’m going straight movie soundtrack because I’m on deadline and Songs With Words mess up my writing process. So it’s Pirates of the Caribbean today as I’m writing a jaunty part of my book. :)

    1. Claudia Welch says:

Fun!!! Rousing!!! I should try that. . . must cruise iTunes and see what tempts me.

  3. kez says:

You can usually find me in the kitchen cooking to Motown classics. There is something about the old Motown sound that lifts and soothes my spirit.

The music on my player ranges from the 70′s to late 80′s. My daughters have tried to update my music portfolio but who can beat MJ,Journey, Boston and Foreigner? You can even find some ancient John Denver and Neil Diamond in there – that will really get DD2′s eyes rolling. :)

    Rock on Claudia!

    1. Claudia Welch says:

      Rocking on, Kez. :)

For you guys stuck in a music time warp—there is some great stuff to be found in this century. Maroon 5, anyone?

      1. Julie says:

        LOVE Adam Levine…. *sigh*

Karen, he would be a good one for an upcoming FROS, I think! :D

        1. Claudia Welch says:

He’s adorable, and so much fun when interviewed. He’s a clever, witty guy.

  4. Julie says:

LOL, you made me smile just envisioning you rocking out, Claudia! :)

I really, REALLY, need a new mp3…we don’t have the official ipod, but I love my mp3. Except that the hub tripped over the wiring that hooked his up to a speaker in his boat, and his mp3 is now lodged somewhere at the bottom of Lake LBJ, so he has now loaded all of HIS junk music on MY mp3 as well. I’m going to let him have mine and make him buy me a new one for my birthday. ;)

My personal soundtrack is very eclectic, like me. :) I listen to pretty much everything. I listen to rock, pop, show tunes, country, instrumentals, classical, R&B, Motown, etc. The hub laughs because I have Alabama and AC/DC, Neil Sedaka, Kenny Loggins, Huey Lewis, Olivia Newton-John, Herbie Hancock, Heart, John Williams, Celine Dion, Joan Jett, the Divinyls, Whitney Houston, Martina McBride, Elton John, Bon Jovi, Marvin Gaye, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Def Leppard….I could go on–likely for days and still not get them all. ;)

    1. Claudia Welch says:

He definitely owes you!! It’s not even up for discussion. Tell him I said so. :)

    2. Julie says:

Also have some of the newer stuff–Kelly Clarkson, Maroon 5, Blake Shelton, Adele, Florence and the Machine, Katy Perry, Flo Rida, LMFAO, and Christina Perri. :)

      1. Claudia Welch says:

Pink is good; I really like her themes. Carrie Underwood, fabulous. Toby Keith. Linkin Park—a-mazing.

  5. Susan Mallery says:

Right now, I’m listening to a lot of 60s rock. The book I just finished has a hero who owns two radio stations in Fool’s Gold. He’s got one of those deep, velvety voices that brush across your skin like a warm breeze. Every night, he shares midnight secrets with the women of Fool’s Gold and plays 60s rock. It still sounds dangerous, 50 years later.

    1. Julie says:

      He sounds yummy, Susan! ;)

    2. Claudia Welch says:

I did the same thing when writing Sorority Sisters—I drowned myself in 70s rock. It was bliss.

      1. Susan Mallery says:

I’d love to hear the soundtrack to Sorority Sisters!

  6. aida alberto says:

I’m an 80′s girl. Love all kinds of music but I don’t like to venture out far after the 80′s. I’m also a big fan of Eminem from the very beginning when so many people made fun of him. Listen to his lyrics and you’ll change your mind.

    1. Claudia Welch says:

I think Eminem is great, the only rap musician I like, in fact. He’s brilliant.

  7. Cyndi says:

I’ve always been fairly ecclectic in my music selections. Just ask my kids. One day it maybe Maroon 5 and P!nk, then the next it’s Bach. You never can tell with me. I love music. Anything from ABBA to Zuba with the exception of Eminem. I have never liked anything he said or did. I really love the 80′s hair bands and Metal ballads. But more recently, I’ve been leaning towards Contemporary Christian music. My favorite song right now is by Casting Crowns – Glorious Day.

    1. Claudia Welch says:

Oh, yeah. I’ve got a load of classical music and ballads on my iPod. But that’s another blog. ;)

  8. Sabrina Jeffries says:

Love my iPod! And my Itunes on my computer. And my Ipod in the bathroom. And my car stereo with the 6 CD changer. Yeah, I love a bit of music. *G* Though I don’t listen while I’m shopping. I have to hear what’s going on around me to keep from being run over. *G*

I tend to be eclectic in my tastes. I like rock, but I also love Celtic fusion (Enter the Haggis is my favorite!), folk, Celtic traditional or folk (groups like Old Blind Dogs and Solas and artists like Karan Casey and Dougie Maclean), classical, show tunes, and pop. I’m not a big fan of jazz, country, or blue grass. But my rock tastes range from Evanescence to Queen to Bare Naked Ladies to Neil Young to the Decemberists. I like classic rock, too. My favorites tend to be singer-songwriters, though. Lots of those on my Ipod–Carly Simon, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, Amos Lee. I do like some alternative rock.

    I just like music!

    1. Julie says:

Oh, I love the Celtic artists! Had not heard of Enter the Haggis, but just checked them out on Amazon and I’m getting some of their music–they’re great! I like the Corrs’ CD called Home. I also like some of the more commercialize Celtic artists like Loreena McKennitt, Enya, Celtic Thunder and Celtic Woman also.

      1. Sabrina Jeffries says:

I’ll have to check out the Corrs. Of the others you mentioned, I like Loreena McKennitt and Enya. The others don’t quite do it for me, but I can’t say why.

  9. Claudia Welch says:

Grass Roots, Crosby/Stills/Nash/Young, Moody Blues, Chicago, The Four Seasons . . . just throwing out some more greats that you might like if you haven’t found them already.

    1. Sabrina Jeffries says:

I love CSNY (have even seen CSN in concert) and Chicago. Hubby likes the others. It’s weird–our tastes intersect in a few places, but we mostly have very different likes.

  10. Kelly Ryan Watson says:

In the past my lifes soundtrack would have held a lot of country. Now it only holds a couple country peeps. Right now my iPod holds Nickelback, Metallica, Dropkick Murphy’s, U2, Katy Perry, and Carrie Underwood, to name a few. I believe three one named acts can pretty much sum up my life with their works. They are P!nk, Adele, and Reba! (Even if Reba is not a one name act, she is in my book!) ;)

    1. Claudia Welch says:

You know, I’ve always loved Reba. And I don’t have a thing downloaded of hers! I need to hit iTunes again.

  11. Pamiam says:

My I-pod is quite diverse also. I have Beatles, Toby Keith, Carrie Underwood, Adele, Nickelback, Maroon 5, Kelly Clarkson, Bon Jove, LMFAO, Stray Cats, ZZ Top …………….and the list goes on.
When things get crazy at work or maybe we are just feeling a little silly, I will plug my i-pod into my speakers and turn on some LMFAO or play Call Me Maybe (or some other fun song) and we do a little chair dancing and it just brightens the day.

    1. Claudia Welch says:

Bryan Adams. . . sigh. That voice! Bon Jovi, got it, but only a few. I have no Bruce Springstein, now that I think about it. Back to iTunes.

  12. dbrown3400 says:

I have everything on my iTunes from Led Zeppelin to classic rock Rod Stewart to Rod singing the classics. I have Blake Shelton through the Zack Brown Band in the country arena and some Maroon 5 as well. There’s Frank Sinatra, Lionel Richie, Phil Collins and Barry Manilow for male vocals as well as others, with Linda Rondstadt, Ella Fitzgerald and Doris Day on the female side. My current songs run to country and I have several blues discs. Elvis is in there too. I don’t care much for hip hop or rap, otherwise I like just about everything including show tunes.

    1. Claudia Welch says:

I have gobs of Frank Sinatra. He can really sing and sweep me up along with him. Gobs and gobs of Frankie.

      Barry Manilow . . . another one I’d forgotten.

I need a new iTunes gift card! This is getting expensive.

      1. Janae says:

Check to see if your library has Freegal music. It allows you to download 3 songs a week from the Sony music library. I use everyone’s library card in the house, so I get 12 songs a week. Also, there’s a Freegal app. It’s a little more work than just buying music from itunes, but it’s free.

Also, youtube has a page(http://www.youtube-mp3.org/) where you can convert their videos to mp3 files. Again, it’s a little more work than buying from itunes, but not much more work.

There’s also, Amazon’s mp3s, too. It’s not free, but it’s a lot less expensive than itunes. It’s really easy to get the music on your ipod.

        1. Claudia Welch says:

You know, I’m happy to pay. I get a particular thrill out of continuing to support these old-timers.

  13. colinfirthfan says:

Definitely Classic Rock. Deep Purple, Led Zep, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden .Just saw Maiden in concert. I was blown away. Best concert ever!!).

At 16 I was a big Bon Jovi fan but I am back to real classic rock :)

This was also the concert yr. I saw Scorpions, Roger Waters: The Wall Live! and of course Iron Maiden.

  14. Claudia Welch says:

Scorpions? I’ve never heard of them. Must check them out immediately.

    Music budget? What music budget?

    1. colinfirthfan says:

Claudia, Scorpions is the band that sand “Rock You Like a Hurricane” :) From Germany.

We took my 12 and 8 yr old for the Scorpions and Iron Maiden concerts. They loved it. Especially Maiden.

      1. Julie says:

Oooooo–LOVE the Scorpions! Saw them when they toured with Winger in maybe 1988 or so….that was SUCH a great show! :)

        1. colinfirthfan says:

OOh I liked Winger though I don’t listen to them too much anymore. Never seen them in concert! I was in love with Kip Wingers eyes!!
Ahh to be 18 again (or should that be 17 ;) ) .

          1. Julie says:

LOL–my friend and I adored Kip Winger too. He was so pretty! ;) AND he could dance, too! It was a really great show!

  15. Janae says:

My name is Janae, and I’m a rockaholic – maybe musicaholic is better description. I LOVE music. It kills me when my dh drives the car because he likes listen to talk radio. The kids take after me because they GROAN when he turns on the talk radio and immediately start telling he needs to turn off the talking and turn on the music.

My ipod has music that covers 70 years – Swing, 50s, early 60s girl bands like the Ronettes, British Invasion, classic rock, little disco, The Police, punk, New Wave, TONS of 80s music, some 90s, alternative, and my guilty pleasure, a couple of boy bands. However, alternative is my absolute favorite – Snow Patrol, Imagine Dragons, The Airborne Toxic Event, Neon Trees, Mumford and Sons, Florence + the Machine, Of Mice and Men, The OffSpring, Blink 182, The Killers, Broken Bells, The Gaslight Anthem, Temper Trap, Crash Kings, Black Keys, Audioslave, Trampled by Turtles, and a new favorite, Red Hot Chili Pipers, a rock band with bagpipes – AWESOME!

    1. colinfirthfan says:

My DH is exactly the same with talk radio. My boys and I immediately switch to the classic rock station!!

I took my 12 and 8 yr old to the Iron Maiden concert. They are big fans as well. We had people high fiving them for being at the concert in their Maiden tees. :) They were a few other kids there as well.

    2. Claudia Welch says:

      Hello, fellow rockaholic!! :)

      1. Claudia Welch says:

And I meant to add, I adore swing music!

  16. Madeline Hunter says:

I just got an Iphone so I am now building my first play list. After signing up for Itunes, the first thing I downloaded was Rolling Stones song. Classics. I am sure tht as I spend hours surfing around I will add others.
And I am glad to see there is another late adopter in the group :)

    1. Claudia Welch says:

I thought I was alone in being a late adopter! I’m so glad you’re in it with me.

  17. Haley says:

LOVE almost all music (with the exception of Metal–I just can’t do it–it sounds like noise to me). Classic rock, Country, Alternative, Show Tunes, you name it. I’ll even listen to classical and opera when the mood strikes. The best thing about an IPOD–it’s all right in that handy little device. No more searching for lost CD’s! Welcome to the club.

    1. Claudia Welch says:

So true. And I love that I have it on shuffle so that I’m constantly surprised.

  18. kez says:

3:30PM and not one mention (that I found) of Michael Buble’? Such a range of music listening to one man’s discography! And a cutie too. :)

    1. Claudia Welch says:

I haven’t thought of him in years! Now why is that?

  19. Olivia Kelly says:

Oh, I loooooove music! I listen to almost everything. All the time. I have recently been on a Brandi Carlile, Mumford and Sons, Johnny Cash, Kina Grannis, Black Keys and Civil Wars kick. I love Pandora, it’s introduced me to so many new artists. Also on deck lately? QUEEN! I go through phases of what I like to listen to, although we almost always have the radio on pop music in the car.
I have music to cook to, to clean to, to write to, to pick me up, to sulk to, to make my kids dance with me in the living room. I can’t understand people who can take it or leave it. I MUST have music. :)

    1. Claudia Welch says:

Queen is a fav of mine as well. Such wonderful harmonies!

  20. Sheridan says:

I think my life soundtrack is much like my life – a complete assortment of random entries reflecting adventures, friends, experiences and moods.

Earlier, I was listening to LMFAO, now I am on DeBussey’s Clair de Lune and various other classical piano pieces. Yesterday was a tiny bit of country and then some Bollywood.

My taste in music is completely based on my mood and environment – the only common thread is that I almost always have something playing.

  21. Kelly Proellocks says:

For me it depends on my mood and what I am doing. If I am cleaning the house I quite often have 60s and 70s music, mowing the lawn used to involve Adam Lambert and the cleaning of the pub can range from my whatever playlist (mild cleaning) to Abba (bad, really bad, includes vomit). I tend to start my cleaning with 1910 Bubblegum Factory and their awesome song 1, 2, 3, Red light.

  22. LilMissMolly says:

I’m a rock fan too – especially Celtic Rock. Enter the Haggis is my favorite band right now.

  23. LouisaCornell says:

How funny you should blog about this. For a couple of years we have had NO muzak at work (Walmart.) And apparently while I was away at RWA Nationals they turned the muzak back on at Walmart. So now we are all back in the bakery kitchen rocking out to 50′s, 60′s, 70′s and 80′s rock.

Now my own personal soundtrack and the music I write to and have on my MP3 player is mostly movie soundtracks (Last of the Mohicans, Emma, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Tangled, WE) and then more serious music – Handel’s Water Music Suite, anything by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Samuel Barber, Shostakovich, Beethoven, Mozart)

    1. Claudia Welch says:

Louisa, I am hooked on the same soundtracks!!! I also have loaded anything by Mozart, Beethoven.

  24. Claudio Ziak says:

Scorpions are a German rock band formed in the year 1965 by guitarist Rudolf Schenker, who is the band’s only constant member (although Klaus Meine has been lead singer for all their studio albums). ,
