As the Superbowl this year had no green and no gold (to both mine and Karen’s heartbreak) I actually watched the commercials. If the Packers were playing I would need the commercial breaks for important things like . . . well, you know. But for most of the first half I could do important things while was playing so I wouldn’t miss the commercials.
I don’t think this year’s crop was the best. Of course they really can’t top the original E-trade Baby commercials. They were so fresh and funny. Now the kid’s kind of “meh.”
I was looking forward to the Volkswagon commercial, which was supposed to feature people they’d found on Youtube being enthusiastic about something. A local girl was chosen because she’d cried on camera about the Packers losing to the Giants last year. It was upsetting, but I draw the line at letting someone film me crying and putting it on YouTube. However I never saw any commercial of the kind.
If you missed those all important Superbowl commercials, you can go here and view them all:

My favorites were the Taco Bell Old Folks, the Kia Robots and, while the Budweiser Colt was adorable, the commercial that made me tear up the most was the Paul Harvey/God Made a Farmer RAM truck commercial. That was beautiful.
My least favorite–the Go Daddy commercial with the Supermodel kissing the Nerd. While this is a great concept on paper (hey, I’ve written it, or close enough) on TV all I can say is EWWWW.
Which Superbowl commercials were your favorites? Which didn’t you care for. Do you have an oldie but a goodie from previous years?
You know what? I really didn’t pay attention to the whole commercial and game, though I have the TV on that channel most of the time.
I did pay attention to some commercials, though. I think the military family one was touching.
My least…can’t really say. I DO agree that the supermodel/nerd one is not as entertaining as some others, but since I didn’t pay attention to the whole commercials, I’ll leave this one alone.
I DID like DORITOS’s dog commercial last year. That was funny. That and the M&M commercial was funny.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 3:19 am.
I think they had the Doritos goat this year. I kind of spaced that one off myself.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 8:06 am.
The Superbowl is not really my thing, but then I am Australian.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 3:40 am.
I have a feeling that’s why the whole commercial hoopla started. For those who couldn’t care.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 8:06 am.
I spent Super Bowl in my room doing an algebra final, I didn’t fail but it wasn’t the best score I ever got on a test. All three g-sons were in my living room whooping and hollering with football type noises coming from the TV. I saw some of the commercials online, loved the farmer commercial and the Budweiser one. I didn’t pay much attention to any of the rest. I had hoped to finish my test in time to go to the movies but with the guys “needing” stuff, mostly our time and attention, movie got re-scheduled for another weekend.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 3:55 am.
I was lucky I passed Algebra let along a single test. Go you!
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 8:07 am.
I didn’t watch either the game or the commercials this year. In Australia, we don’t get the whole game anyway but I did enjoy the half time show several years ago when The Who played. I may have had the tv up as high as it could go and may have been rocking out to it but since no one was there watching me did I really do it? This morning Gamer Dude was called into the pub to clean up the mess left over from the celebration yesterday while I enjoyed my sleep. I am going to be enjoying my sleep tonight though because I had the thrilling experience of a diabetes test complete with that awful glucose drink and two blood tests. I really wanted to bring home the arm chair that they had there because it was so comfortable that I actually fell asleep for an hour or so while down town – Gamer Dude had a good laugh at this because I am getting fairly well known for falling asleep too easily.

I forgot to mention Beyonce. She wasn’t too bad. Better than a lot of the commercials.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 8:08 am.
I don’t generally watch the super bowl, and this year was no different. However, I took a peek at some of the commercials online yesterday. The Budweiser colt one made me cry. I won’t touch that beer, but their commercials featuring the horses are always great. All the rest kind of bored me. I liked the Ram/Farmer one, but it was really long.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 8:27 am.
Not a Bud fan either but I do like the horses. We visited the Clysedale barn in St. Louis. You could have eaten off the floor. It was like no barn I’d ever been in.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 8:45 am.
I didn’t watch the game nor the commercials. I read a book instead. I’m trying very hard to keep authors writing and earning money. I did see the Budweiser and the Dodge ram ads on the internet. I’m partial to the Clydsdales though. We have toured the Budweiser factory in St. Louis and Grant’s Farm outside St. Louis. The farm is where some of the colts are born, some of the horses in the commercials retire to. We saw a three week old colt who was all legs. Plus you get free beer at both places.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 8:28 am.
There was free beer at Grant’s Farm? I missed it!
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 8:45 am.
I watched the Superbowl, and what started as a stinker turned out to be a pretty good game. Beyonce did her thing and was good, but she isn’t my cup of tea.
We don’t get many of the good commercials in Canada. We get a few, but for the most part they are nothing special. I haven’t had a chance to go online and check out any of the commercials yet.
My favourite is from years and years ago. It is the Budwiser one where the sheared lamb streaks through the clysdale football game. “We got a streaker!!” It cracks me up every time.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 8:39 am.
Some of the Bud commercials are pretty good. There was one where the horses played football. “They usually go for 2.” Loved that.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 8:46 am.
I didn’t pay much attention to the game/commercials at first though it was definitely on. I was most disappointed at the lack of Green and Gold myself. The game got most interesting at the power outage and after.
Favorite commercials were the Clydesdale one, the God made a farmer one, the good luck voodoo ones, and the car one where they were dodging all sorts of things off of other vehicles including fireworks and dog slobber. I missed the Taco Bell one everyone mentioned. I didn’t care for the GoDaddy one either, and the rest were rather meh. An old one I liked was another Clydesdale one where the horses were playing football with a zebra for a ref.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 8:43 am.
I liked the voodoo one too.
I figured the game was over in the first half. Should have known better.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 8:48 am.
I liked the Doritoes Goat and the Bud Light Voodoo Chair Commercial. “How much luck do you need?”
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 9:16 am.
That’s a great tag line, “How much luck do you need?” Love it.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 9:19 am.
I only hung in watching till about midway through the 3rd quarter. I decided to bag it and go back to the NCIS marathon on USA that I had been watching all day.
I LOATHED that Go Daddy commercial. It actually made me want to throw up! My munchkin (8 yrs old) was sitting next to me when that one came on and she just looked at me like “what the hell??”
I loved the VW commercial where everyone was talking in the Jamaican accent. Even DH laughed at that one. And the one with the kid going stag to prom. I think that one was Audi. Taco Bell with the old folks was pretty darn funny too. ANything that hit after I bagged it, I missed. Were there any good ones later in the game???
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 9:27 am.
Oh and the Oreo Whisper FIght commercial. I Saw it again this morning and laughed yet again. Ridiculous I know, but still really funny.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 9:34 am.
Oh cripes, and that Calvin Kline commercial…. really need I say more?
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 9:35 am.
LOL! And you only watched until the third quarter?
I thought the Minnesota Jamaican was a riot too. Turn that frown upside down, hey.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 9:40 am.
Pretty sad that I am showing my age with the spurts of thought. I wouldn’t have remembered those extra ones if I’d not been looking for the list of ads online.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 9:45 am.
I loved, applauded, and maybe even drooled a little at the Calvin Klein commercial. I also liked the Doritos goat commercial. I’m not a big fan of any Go Daddy ad. I liked the e-trade commercials of the past, and always like the Budweiser Clydesdale commercials.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 9:40 am.
I’m not even sure what Go Daddy is, so their marketing isn’t working for me. Is it websites?
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 9:46 am.
Yes, websites. I just think their ads are degrading to women.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 10:15 am.
My favorites were definitely the Jeep/military family one, the Paul Harvey one, the Audi one with the prom, the Taco Bell octogenarians and the VW one with the Jamaican accent. The one with Haley Cuoco was cute and the one with Amy Poehler was kinda funny, but I thought most of the commercials were really lame this year. The Doritos and M&M ones last year were hysterical, and this year they were dumb, I thought. I will say that the guy in the CK one should be a subject for a future FROS, Karen! Dayum, he was purty!
The one I liked least was definitely the Go Daddy one. Not the premise, so much as the EXTREME close up and the gag-inducing sound effects. It was awful. Again, the premise was cute, and if they had moved the cameras and ESPECIALLY the microphones back a little, they might have gotten the response they wanted. Of course, any publicity is good publicity to hear them say it, so I guess if people are talking about Go Daddy, they did what they wanted.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 9:42 am.
I used to love the E-Trade commercials, but they have gotten old too. They need to think up something new.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 9:44 am.
I’m with you on the E-trade commercials.
I still laugh at the one where the baby says “Apparently riding the dog like a horse is frowned upon in this establishment.” Classic. But they need to find something equally good and so far they haven’t.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 9:47 am.
Oh, I do too! I think that one was one of their best one-liners. I even like the one where the mom takes away his tablet or laptop, and he says he has a smart phone with an e-trade app just because that is so typical of today’s environment, it’s funny. Flo with Progressive is another one that’s getting old. I still like Geico’s gecko, but possibly because I’m an Anglophile and I think the accent is cute.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 10:00 am.
They keep updating the Geiko ones with new things, rather than redoing old ones. The guys with the banjos saying things like “He’s happier than Gallagher in a farmer’s market” are pretty clever.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 10:26 am.
The commercials never really grab me; but I did like the Oreo one and did not like the Go Daddy one at all.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 9:54 am.
I think Go Daddy backfired. Unless people remembering it because it was “ick” is what they were after.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 10:27 am.
I didn’t see all of them – I’ll have to go to the link. I did like the Taco Bell, the Budweiser Colt, and the Tide commercial getting rid of the Joe Montana stain.
The E-Trade has gotten old and I didn’t care for the VW one. I loved the Darth Vader from the past.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 10:06 am.
Oh, forgot the Joe Montana stain. I kept waiting for Joe to show up.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 10:27 am.
That GoDaddy commercial actually made me uncomfortable, it seemed so wrong.
I loved the Paul Harvey/Dodge commercial – I listened to Paul Harvey from the time I was a child til he passed.
I did enjoy the Calvin Klein commercial (- it was good to look at and know that marketing during sports is moving to women and how good was that?!)
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 10:08 am.
My kids asked me who Paul Harvey was. Sigh.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 10:28 am.
GoDaddy was awful. It doesn’t matter who it was, who wants to see that?
I loved Calvin Klein
And I loved the Seth Rogen Paul Rudd commercials (I think maybe there were two?). Can’t remember what they were for, though
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 10:25 am.
Don’t remember what the Seth/Paul commercials were for either. But Lebron was there on an ipad. I don’t think that’s what they wanted me to remember.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 10:29 am.
Especially since it was for Samsung and Lebron was on a Tablet that was not an Ipad
. Bit of a fail on their part then.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 12:30 pm.
I think everything’s an ipad. Whoops.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 1:17 pm.
I loved the Paul Harvey/Farmer commercial and the Clydesdale commercial.
I didn’t see any of the commercials for the 2nd half so thankfully missed the GoDaddy, Taco Bell and other commercials.
All Time Favorite: Mean Joe Greene and the Kid in the Coke commercial.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 10:30 am.
That mean Joe Greene commercial was so adorable.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 10:33 am.
I didn’t get to see the first part of the Super Bowl because the picture on the girls’ TV went out, then I was in transit to my house. But that meant I got to see the best part of the game and Beyonce’s show. I don’t particularly like her in general, but you have to admire the stamina she must have to perform like that in those heels. Haha. And I wouldn’t mind having her figure. Wow!
I liked the Budweiser commercial best of all. My favorite one from years past is the Bud commercial with the Clydesdales in the snow.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 11:45 am.
She can certainly dance. Wow.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 12:20 pm.
I liked the VW from last year as well as this year’s… 2012 was the little guy in the Darth Vader costume.. and his dad made the VW light up with the remote key..
GoDaddy was ick…but we saw the one they didn’t use also… it was even ickier! Too much info & action…
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 11:48 am.
The Darth Vader one was very cute.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 12:20 pm.
I was off doing other things as football isn’t my favorite pastime. I did watch the commercials online yesterday and I’ll admit I loved the one where the little girl had her dad dress up as a princess and then his friends joined – I always love it when guys are fine with being silly like that.
I think my all time favorite SB commercial – that I STILL go back and watch on YouTube from time to time is the Star Wars kid for VW. BRILLIANT. Brilliant enough that I actually remember the car company. That commercial almost made me want to have a kid just so I could do the same to them… since any kid of mine would have to like Star Wars.
Go Daddy’s commercials (and CEO) irk me enough that I actively refuse to use any of their services.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 11:55 am.
haha What CateS said
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 12:01 pm.
VW does some nice commercials. The Star Wars one especially.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 12:22 pm.
We didn’t watch the game or commericials here because my dh is an artist and doesn’t get football (or basketball for that matter). It’s SUCH a headache trying to explain it to him that I quit trying. He’ll occasionally turn the game on, but I always make a quick exit to avoid the inevitable questions.
I did watch some of the commercials online – the Bud one made me cry and the farmer one reminded me of all my farmer/rancher friends in Montana.
Best one ever – VW’s Dark Vader commercial. It’s hard to go wrong with Star Wars.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 12:14 pm.
The farmer one was really well done, and the photography was amazing.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 12:24 pm.
I thought so too. I loved it. Reminded me of my childhood.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 12:42 pm.
Ditto. But in Illinois instead of TX.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 1:17 pm.
Tied for favorite for me: Doritos Fashionista Daddy & Taco Bell Viva Young
Worst of all – Go Daddy Perfect Match.
I am inputting info regarding all these ads for a professor to find: if add is persuasive, this ad is likeable, ad has a strong brand message. His students watched ads yesterday in class and scaled them. Also, it is separated out female and male. Should be interesting.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 12:30 pm.
Oh, that would be interesting!
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 1:19 pm.
I didn’t watch the Superbowl, but I did just go watch the farmer commercial, and I am still wiping tears away. I might have to go for a walk to pull myself together. A local organic farm went under and I’ve been really bummed out about it, and I thought about them all through that commercial.
And wow, is there anyone in the world like Paul Harvey? I always wanted to do that kind of thing, write short emotional things and read them on the radio!
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 12:46 pm.
I know. I miss him.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 1:19 pm.
Oh I had a few fave’s I cried with the Paul Harvey/Farmer/Ram. I loved the Bud Clydesdale, and the Jeep with the Military families. But My fav was the Calvin Kline with the hot Body. The ones that I really did not care for the Go Daddy or the Goat one.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 12:48 pm.
The Jeep one was well done too. I agree.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 1:20 pm.
Here in Canada we don’t get the same commercials during the Super Bowl… but I did watch them online. I agree with you. They weren’t all that great this year. A few of them made me smile, others made me say ‘hu?’. Otherwise, my favourites are the same as yours
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 1:26 pm.
I do say “huh” quite a bit over commercials these days.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 1:52 pm.
I thought the VW one was cute. I sort of watched while I gabbed with family,so I probably missed some good ones.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 2:45 pm.
Ditto. There was gabbing and wine and snacks. I’m glad there are always instant replays, even for the commercials.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 3:05 pm.
I didn’t watch, so the only commercial I’ve seen is the supermodel and geek (thanks to Access Hollywood) and it definitely got a thumbs down from me, especially when they showed the tongue scene which was cut from the final version.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 3:17 pm.
Oh no, it was worse?!?!?!
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 3:44 pm.
Should I admit that I have never watched the Superbowl? I watched the last 40 minutes when the Saints played (it was the Saints! In the Superbowl!!), and I was glad I did, but I wasn’t thrilled enough about their being in it to actually watch the whole thing.
Hubby and I are just not into sports at all. But hey, I’ll go watch that video of the commercials one of these days! Maybe. *G*
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 3:22 pm.
We still love you.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 3:44 pm.
I read an appropriate description of the Go Daddy ad yesterday. Someone said that it sounded like a five year old eating a peanut butter sandwich!! I personally thought it was just crude.
As for the rest of the commercials, my faves were Paul Harvey , USO, Anheiser Bush Clydesdales, the Oreo whisper fight, Taco Bells old people, and the Audi ad where the kid went stag to his prom.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 3:48 pm.
Crude about covers it.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 3:59 pm.
We had a party so I think I missed some of them while I was handing out more beer and chips.
Love the baby horse one…aww! But nothing much struck me. Will go youtube the Paul Harvey one, must have missed it. Nothing just wowed me, though. Did enjoy the halftime show. All the women in the room were marveling at the dance moves in stilettos.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 3:51 pm.
I know!! And here I sit with ice on my knee because I jogged in tennis shoes. I would be dead if I tried to walk in stilettos. There’s no dancing.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 4:00 pm.
The three I liked most were the God Made Farmers, Taco Bell Old Folks, and the Budweiser Colt commercials. Go Daddy should just go. Also, I wasn’t impressed with the Pistachio commercial.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 5:04 pm.
Was the pistachio one with the Asian dude? I didn’t get that.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 6:16 pm.
Hands down the Ram Trucks/National FFA “God Made a Farmer” commercial. I that it was amazing, and am really sad when I see some of the critics bashing it. Don’t these people know where their food/fuel comes from (as well as many other products)?!?
Rant over.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 5:34 pm.
People bashed it? Huh. Don’t get that either.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 6:17 pm.
I don’t watch sports and am the sort who was annoyed that Elementary was shoved out of its time slot by the loooooong game.
Posted on February 5, 2013 at 8:59 pm.
If someone paid me the amount that a Super Bowl ad costs, I might watch one. I do not turn on my tv on Super Bowl Sunday and I do not go to a store or restaurant.
Posted on February 6, 2013 at 3:26 am.
I love the Paul Harvey/ God Made a Farmer Commercial. I could watch that again and again. Hats off to farmers.
Posted on February 6, 2013 at 3:22 pm.
