My hobbies are relaxing, so potato, potatoh really.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 4:20 am.
That’s perfect, Mary!

Reading for me is neither a hobby or a relaxie. To me it is as necessary as breathing. My relaxies are vacuuming the carpet (yeah it’s housework but it eases my OCD and that’s never a bad thing in my books), watching crime shows, falling asleep, which is way too easy for me to do, I did it today at Gamer Dude’s mother’s place and she and her partner teased me for what they considered to be snoring – but I wasn’t snoring, I was just breathing heavy and I have a funny little snuffle sound . . . well, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 4:32 am.
I hear you on the reading part, Kelly! And vacuuming is a relaxie for me, too.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:52 pm.
As KellyP mentioned, sleeping is a relaxie for me. A necessity but still a relaxie. Also, daydreaming is a relaxie. Lounging on my bed is a relaxie. My part-time relaxie is doing word search, sudoku, and those celebrity crosswords from a certain magazine.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 5:45 am.
Ooh, crosswords are a great relaxie, E.R.!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:52 pm.
I take a pill.
That’s only for super stress though, normal stress, I journal. I journal like mad. I’ve been known to write 10 pages or more just working through a problem that I’m chewing on. And this is a regular spiral bound notebook, not a little diary book! If that doesn’t work, I talk. That’s a huge relaxie for me. I’ve always been a talker and, even if it’s just about nothing, I love to chat. It gets my mind off of whatever’s bugging me. And sometimes talking through my problem with someone else lets me fix it. Half the time they don’t even have to say anything, just hearing myself state the problem out loud to someone disposed to help, helps me decide on a solution. So, nerd that I am, writing and talking are my relaxies.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 7:37 am.
Those both sound like very positive, healthy relaxies, Liz B!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:53 pm.
My relaxy (is that the singular form) is/was playing the piano. However, I don’t have a piano anymore. I need a Colonel Brandon to give me one.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 8:03 am.
Well, fall into a mournful ague and go out walking in the rain, Fresh. Be pro-active! *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:54 pm.
Haha! You’re right. I’ve just been lazy. I’m walking in the snow right now. Good start.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 8:25 pm.
My relaxie is mindless TV. I’ve been watching a lot of series on Netflix or HBO Go. It’s the only way I can get the book to turn off in my head.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 8:21 am.
I use TV for that, too, Lori. Too much, probably. *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:55 pm.
My relaxies are a book. Watching the hobbit trilogy directors cut for about the thousandth time, playing music, and spending time with friends and cats and in the non-imcement days, hiking.
And my amusements: Teaching the little cat to walk on a leash he’s still a bit like. “Really, must we do this AGAIN???” the big cat is like “WALKIES!!” Oh and people watching new people who see Mason out for his walk.
Mason and Beans are both Maine Coon/Ragdoll/Rescue Mixes and were both supposed to be giant breeds. Someone didn’t give Beans (whose vet name is Solomon) the message. So now I have a Giant Giant Breed and a fluffy itty bitty kitty that rules the house. The two of them get along great, but they always make me giggle when they sit next to one another.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 8:25 am.
Maine Coons are adorable and I want one or five. I wonder if I order the crazy cat lady starter kit if I can order several Maine Coon kittens or if I can’t get Maine Coons then I would happily settle for Norwegian Forest Cats (also a large breed)? Of course this would necessitate Gamer Dude and I having to get a bigger bed since Acheron is a bed hog as it is and the Biscuit kitty could also turn into a bed hog. More cats would mean less bed for Gamer Dude and I and since he and I have a queen size now it could get interesting (it’ll be worse if he gets a Pomeranian or two and those were allowed on the bed).
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 8:47 am.
I’d recommend the mixes I have or Maine Coons. Every one I’ve had That has not come out of a feral situation, has been playful, loving and had these amazing personalities. However, even the feral come around easier than most feral cats.
They are very much like the dog breed of the cat world. I was undecided about getting cats again after Princess Fluffybutt’s passing. I’d had her for 14 years. But 2 years later was the perfect time to take these two on.
And yes, I rescue all of my cats. Even though it breaks my heart to leave the rest of them behind.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 9:14 am.
Acheron is a rescue. He’s a classic brown tabby domestic shorthair. I got him from the RSPCA when he was 6 months and we will have been together for 4 years later this year. We got the Biscuit kitty from the neighbours across the road when their queen had a litter of kittens. The neighbours, sadly, are too lazy to desex their cat and don’t really take good care of her especially with regards to feeding. Our two have a constant supply of dry food and get two wet feeds a day. Biscuit needs it because she is a growing kitty and Acheron needs it so he can maintain a healthy weight. Both these cats are very spoiled and I get teased because I baby them.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 10:20 am.
We, too, have a queen sized bed and we’ve had to kick kids and pets out of it before. (Kids got too big and no one was getting their proper rest). We had a Maine Coon for a while. That cat was head-strong, and had lots of personality. She had big paws, but was a rather small cat.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 9:15 am.
Teaching cats to walk on a leash. That’s a relaxy I’ve never heard before. *g* You have to post a picture, Pesky!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:57 pm.
My relaxies are coming to this blog, reading blogs about books, and surfing Amazon for new books. Then emailing my library director links to books I want to read. She laughs at me, but it is all good. Gives us something to talk about. Other relaxies are cooking, but I haven’t been doing much of that recently. Just haven’t been in the mood. When the mood does strike, look out! Delectable things come out of my kitchen. I started walking last June, and it was more of a chore, but now it has become relaxing. If my walking buddy and I aren’t able to connect because of kids/schedules/life I feel the difference and can’t wait to get back at it. Its weird how one small change can have effects in all the other parts of life.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 9:13 am.
I’m so glad we’re one of your relaxies, Amanda! And yes, much as I hate to admit it, I feel better when I’ve been walking for a few days straight.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:59 pm.
Standing under the showerheads (yes, we have a super deluxe shower) until the waterheater runs cold is my favorite relaxie. Once all my muscles are loose I find a glass of wine and my latest book. Near heaven.
Happy Friday!!!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 9:37 am.
Okay, and shoe shopping never hurt anyone!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 9:38 am.
I love your relaxie, kez! Both of them. *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 1:00 pm.
I do find exercise relaxing and really can’t sleep if I don’t get some kind of exercise every day, but my true relaxes are reading, reading, and reading. I also love gardening (shocking, right?) and photography.
I also like video games, but tend toward bejeweled and Tetris and Catan. What game let you be a fair lady?
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 9:54 am.
Photography’s a great relaxie, isn’t it? My fair lady game was Dragon Age: Origins. There was some sword-fighting involved, but I got to marry the bastard prince and become queen of the realm. And kill a dragon. *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 1:01 pm.
Sweeping. No kidding. I’m known as the Mad Sweeper (at least in my own mind). Stuck on the book, stressed out by life, agitated and unhappy—-I sweep. I grab the broom and head for the driveway, the patio, the porch (and in extreme cases, the street). I sweep and sweep and sweep.
It’s very cathartic. It’s my relaxie. And I get something accomplished, also very cathartic.
Sweeping. Who knew?
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 10:19 am.
Hey Claudia, do you want to come and sweep my carpet? I could probably stop myself from doing an OCD vacuum after you swept.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 10:22 am.
Come into my house, my darling. Have I got a sweeping area for you.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 11:45 am.
You can sweep the pinecones off my driveway.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:27 pm.
It’s nice to have a relaxie where other people are willing to help you out, isn’t it? *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 1:03 pm.
There is absolutely a difference between a hobby and a relaxie. Reading and comfort food are probably my #1 & #2 relaxies (yep, I’m totally an emotional eater).
I also clean. I hate cleaning….however, when I’m up to my ears in everything else, I have to take a minute to clear out the clutter, dust, and other stuff so I can relax enough to restart and focus.
But a book….that takes care of everything almost every time!
HAPPY FRIDAY! It’s FRIDAY, FRIDAY, FRIDAY!!!!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 10:30 am.
I like your relaxies, Haley — I’m not a cleaning fan, either, but it does help clear my mind. Stupid cleaning. *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 1:04 pm.
My relaxies are my little video games on my phone. Diamond Dash is a favorite. You get five turns to play in a 7 minute time span or so, and that is just enough for a little break and I can move on to other things. I love it and it was free in the android market, and I play through facebook sometimes too.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 10:37 am.
Those little games are life-savers. If I’m stuck on the story, I whip out Bubbles or Fruit Ninja for five minutes, and it generally helps clear my head, too. Good one, Julie!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 1:06 pm.
My relaxies are The Goddess Blogs, chocolate, Ali (my rescue kitty), reading, watching mindless tv and listening to music.
Did I forget to mention cross-stiching? It’s a passion hobby but it is relaxing.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 10:53 am.
You have some awesome relaxies, Angela! Especially The Goddess Blogs one. *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 1:06 pm.
Altering patterns for sewing is a relaxie for me. Playing Scrabble against the computer is another, that’s why I have the Scrabble app on all my hand held toys. Another is watching the patterns in the sky, it’s better when I have my camera with me but if not I will just watch and bemoan not having said camera.
Reading is a necessity, one that keeps me centered and sane and keeps everyone else pink and breathing. Without reading I would become a segment on the six o’clock news.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 11:17 am.
Those sound like very healthy relaxies, evlqn!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 1:29 pm.
Everything around me has been going crazy for a while, so I took a vacation!
When that isn’t an option I read. Then I read some more. After that I read even more. I need to be exercising more, but after all the walking on vacation my knee is almost the size of a small watermelon. I may need to figure out another exercise option. Hmm. Most times my dogs relax me and make me laugh. Gardening is another form of relaxation, until I realize I should’ve watered something a lot earlier! Watching birds also relaxes me. Your cakes are looking great!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 11:49 am.
Vacation is the ultimate relaxie, isn’t it, Kelly? Except for the bad knee. Yipes! And thanks for the cake compliment. I think I’m improving. Hopefully. *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:10 pm.
Crossword puzzles and crocheting a few rows in the never ending blanket. Reading for me is so all consuming that I don’t know if its really relaxing, just something i have to do everyday.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:25 pm.
I wish I could crochet, Teri. I think it’s only relaxing if you’re good at it. *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:11 pm.
Reading, but some days I look at my TBR pile and grumble.
If I do that, I have a “Castle” marathon.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:29 pm.
Ah, Castle. You have excellent relaxie taste, TinaF.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:11 pm.
My husband and I are video gamers for sure. When we first started dating, we’d spend 8-10 hours straight playing Diablo on a Saturday… We have played WOW, and DND as well, beaten several Mario games, Tank Battles, Halo, Rock Band… goodness, you name it, we’ve probably played it. Though, of course, that has slowed significantly since we’ve had children.
We also like movies (anything but drama or horror), and TV. We’ve really gotten into the History channel, HGTV, and the Food Network. They’ve got some fun stuff there.
When I’m relaxing, I’m DEFINITELY NOT an exercise person. I like to read, paint, scrapbook, write, garden… basically ANYTHING that doesn’t involve getting my blood pumping too hard (believe it or not, it gives me migraines). As a mom, though, when I want to get away from the craziness, I have a shower. It’s a great place to figure out plots, solve problems, and generally get my life back in order.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:31 pm.
I like Food Network too, Cherie, though for me I think it’s because everything they make is SO above my skill level that I feel no pressure at all. *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:12 pm.
There are several things I do to relax: put on some country or dance music, take a walk, read a great book or bake and give away all the food to others. If it is a horrible week at the hospital we might have dinner and drinks.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:41 pm.
Those all sound awesome, Marianne. And dinner with friends to unwind — that’s just the best, isn’t it?
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:13 pm.
What game lets you be a saintly noblewoman? Is there some Regency video game out there? I love backgammon, reading, writing, walking and drinking Coke. Those are my relaxies. I need them everyday!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:43 pm.
The game is Dragon Age: Origins, Lisa. And there is some slaying involved, but if you play it right you can be queen. It’s good to be the queen.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:15 pm.
Reading for me! Or cooking. Or baking (though I don’t have the patience for those beautiful cakes like you make). I do exercise a lot and I think I do it more for the rev-factor than the relax-factor.
Then there’s always some wine and property porn on TV (HGTV).
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 12:53 pm.
Bless you, Christie for calling those things beautiful. *g* And I agree, exercise doesn’t so much relax me as it helps me to clear my mind.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:16 pm.
My biggest relaxies are music, especially Rod Stewart’s easy listening recordings, and, in season, baseball. I have a hard time watching television any more. Am not vested in any programs except an occasional Bones or CSI NY. I generally have the Music Choice Singers and Swing station on when I’m not listening to Mr. Stewart. I get a steady dose of Blues Clues, Wonder Pets, Barbie movies and other programming suitable for a 4-1/2 y/o that I look for something more subdued when I’m at home. Even when I’m at the girls’, most of the time we have the Music Choice channel on unless Leia has special privileges or we’re having an Elvis marathon. That girl loves her some Elvis. We all do.
I’m not adept at video games although both girls are quite good. I have the feeling Leia would do well just from the little exposure she’s had on the computer with Dora the Explorer and other Nick, Jr. games.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 1:59 pm.
I think you’ve found your perfect relaxies, Donna. And may I say someone has excellent taste in girl names. *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:17 pm.
Yup, she was named for Princess Leia.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:38 pm.
Reading and writing are more like an obsession for me, yet there are times I give myself permission to pile up in the bed with a great book and just while away a Sunday afternoon.
I also do jigsaw puzzles. And needlework. And bathe dogs. Not so relaxing for them, but I like to scrub them clean and wrap them in a towel and sit in my rocking chair to blow them dry. They always end up asleep and I guess that is what relaxes me.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 2:03 pm.
My sister says a happy dog sends out sleep waves, Louisa. I think you’ve discovered the reason.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:18 pm.
I never thought of it that way! I think you’re right! And by the way, in my expert opinion (I do run a bakery and I am a cake decorator) your Mount Doom cake is AWESOME !!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 4:19 pm.
Ah, thank you so much for saying that, Louisa!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 10:37 pm.
I think mine depends on what kind of relaxing I need.. (and I love the word “relaxies”!)
If I need to lighten up a bit, I’ll hit a funny website.
If I need a mental break from a project, I’ll stop and watch a movie or read a bit.
If I need to just relax, bubble bath
Also cooking kind of relaxes me…. as does wine. Cooking while drinking wine is even better.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 2:43 pm.
I love it, Sheridan — a relaxie for every ailment. Perfect.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:19 pm.
I haven’t quite thought of the difference between my hobbies and relaxies.. I love to read, so maybe the different genres make a difference from a feel good to a work on yourself, sewing and making homemade natural beauty products seems like work, but it is relaxing (especially when using all the smells like lavender and orange blossom) = maybe my true relaxation comes from soaking in a tub and being pampered. Exercising is only relaxing after I have done it, come home and showered, and put my feet up..it’s work. I do find swimming relaxing, just floating on my back looking up into the sky and have the feeling of comfort and awe.
I miss playing D&D with people, I used to be in a group. I am not “tech” savy and maybe that is why I haven’t tried online role playing.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 2:54 pm.
Oh, you have some nice relaxies, Carla. And I recommend Playstation 3 – it doesn’t require much techiness, of which I have very little. *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:21 pm.
My biggest relaxie is reading a good book. My daughter said because of that UI seem to relax quite a bit.. lol and as crazy as it sounds whenever I’m folding laundry I just go into auto pilot and relax.
There’s always my crossword puzzles too.
Carol L
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 2:58 pm.
I think anything where you can just let the back of your mind free is relaxing. Even folding laundry. *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:22 pm.
I used to feel the same way as you about exercise, but sometime in the past five years, IT became my relaxie. I go for a walk and my mind soars. I swim and my troubles melt away.
It’s not my only relaxie; I do like jigsaw puzzles. Both those and walking help me engage my conscious mind, so my subconscious mind can play.
Reading doesn’t actually relax me (I’ve never understood people who read before bedtime to fall asleep). It hypes me up. I enjoy it, so it’s a pleasure, but I can’t do it to relax. My mind starts playing with all the parameters of the story or worrying about the characters, if it’s a good book.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 3:24 pm.
I can’t read before bedtime because I HAVE to know what happens next. Or if I’ve figured out the story, I have to read it to make sure that it’s what I’ve worked out in my head.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 4:25 pm.
Yes, puzzles are awesome for that, aren’t they, Sabrina?
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 6:22 pm.
I find exercising really relaxing at times. It takes off an edge. Same thing with gardening – it’s being outside and enjoying the sunshine. Or watching the rain. Did you get hail this morning in your SoCal location? We did on the coast, and it was beautiful. I love the sound it makes on the roof.
I’ll clean, too, because it clears out the cobwebs and makes it easier to focus on what I need to do. Like Claudia, I really like sweeping – and even raking, but there’s not much of that to do in SoCal.
Almost anything without kids is relaxing, but definitely hard to do.
Reading is like breathing. So is making jewelry. However, doing other kind of art is relaxing. It helps me stay creative.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 4:37 pm.
I got thunder, but no hail, Janae. My sis 2 miles away got a huge hail storm. I accused her of hogging the microclimate. *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 6:24 pm.
I’m jealous you got thunder, lol.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 8:39 pm.
In addition to being fiendishly addicted to wogging for relaxation, I also find that a good donut can give you zen-like feeling. Yin and yang, baby. Yin and yang
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 5:20 pm.
Okay, I do find your donut argument sound, curse you, Julia. *g*
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 6:24 pm.
Reading
Cleaning (yes it relaxes me to have everything in its place!)
photography
old b/w tv movies like “The Thin Man”
making CD’s on the computer
talking to my best friend on the phone relaxes me too.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 6:43 pm.
I like making music CD’s on the computer too, Robin! I have to concentrate, but once it’s done, it’s out of my mind.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 10:39 pm.
Listening to music, watching a favorite dvd or taking a walk relax me.
Reading does relax me, but I consider it a necessity.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 8:42 pm.
Those all sound perfect, taurus!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 10:39 pm.
Well shopping is always a lovely relaxing adventure, especially if it’s on line. Although there’s nothing like the thrill of the hunt in the store.
Cooking and reading are also my favorites.
I used to be able to say watching TV, until I started watching Scandal, I can’t relax!
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 9:24 pm.
LOL, Nancy. No, a thriller TV show wouldn’t be very relaxing, would it? *g* Try HGTV. Occasional throwing of chairs and cabinet destruction, but otherwise it’s pretty tame. ;->
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 10:41 pm.
I sofa surf.
Posted on February 8, 2013 at 11:47 pm.
the most relaxing for me is to be reading. I do have to say that I do work out slighlty… key word. I do yoga on Monday’s, walk on treadmill tuesday’s, wednesday is core training, Thursday is treadmill and Friday is full body work out… Saturday and Sunday are my times. In the evenings if I am stressed from work I will think about one of the books that I have read and will go and find it ( if it isn’t on my nook) and find the part that my mind was interested in. relaxing and reading. I read a novel or a novella daily or just about daily… I do of course have my favorite authors and I promote them all the time….Like now… I Love your books
Posted on February 11, 2013 at 10:55 am.
My relaxy is rather odd, at least to me it is. When hubby, 4 kids, dog, and all other not so normal family tend to close in on me, I sit in my minivan. With the doors locked and all the keys with me. I don’t go anywhere, not because I don’t want to go anywhere but because there’s no gas in the tank. I just sit there and read or write in my journal and sometimes listen to the radio. My neighbor used to worry about me until I explained to him that I do it to “run away from home” and the only way to do so is do so only in my imagination. I know, crazy…
Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:02 am.
Eat candy!
Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:17 am.
I love to read. Reading is my passion, and relaxes me more that anything else. I love escaping reality by getting lost in a book.
Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:48 am.
Knitting is very relaxing. I also enjoy reading in bed before I fall asleep.
Posted on February 11, 2013 at 12:09 pm.
I used to play video games too! (world of warcraft) I always found games relaxing, but they took me away from other things I should be doing. My favorite way to relax is reading or listening to a book. The best part of audio books is you can enjoy them anywhere! I’ve transformed my hour and a half commute each way from the worst part of my day to the best thanks to audio books. It makes dusting and folding laundry less of a chore too. I love that my brain can relax and enjoy a good story while I’m getting to-do cleaning projects done. win-win!
Posted on February 11, 2013 at 9:54 pm.
Reading is my all time relaxer and a way to escape this cold hard world. I read at breakfast, I read at lunch, I read at dinner and I read at bedtime. Nothing beats a good book grasped in my hands.
Posted on February 12, 2013 at 12:38 pm.
I wished I could cook pancakes, your recipe sounds delicious. But I lake a pancake cooking gene, I burn them no matter what I do. I’ll just stick to reading about them in books, and when the kids want them, we go out.
Posted on February 12, 2013 at 12:50 pm.
I am a sewer and always thinking about my next project day and night, so reading is my only relax all though watchimg tv and computer games help but then i am often reading at the same time. reading you can escape into another world. What would I do without reading aggggggggggggg. Got a kobo for christmas so now i have 140 books waiting so that is good and always adding a lastest release to the list to the lack of understanding husbands dismay
