For Refreshment Only Sunday goes to the Oscars!

Yup, it’s Academy Award time again (YAY!) and so today for FROS, we’re going to take a look at the Best Actor Category and pick our own winner.

First up to the podium is the ever talented Bradley Cooper:

This is not a picture from the nominated movie, Silver Linings Playbook, but is instead my favorite picture of BC. I think it shows off his assets rather nicely, so I’m using it. He does has nice ‘assets,’ doesn’t he?

Next up on the podium, is Daniel Day Lewis, a man of passion known for his willingness to get deeply into each character he plays.

Daniel went to extraordinary lengths to look more like Lincoln, the movie he was nominated for, even losing an amazing amount of weight to look ‘gaunt.’ Again, this isn’t a picture of him from the movie, but is one of my favorites of him. I’ve always thought he had an interesting face, full of character and passion.

Next up is some guy I’ve never heard of before. I’ll post his picture and we’ll see if perhaps one of you guys know him:

They said he sang a lot in the movie he was in, something about Being Miserable, or What a Miserable, or something like that. Do any of you know him? I must say, he is a mighty fine looking actor!

Next up is another mysterious sort, although I know his name – the enigmatic Joaquin Phoenix, who gave a masterful performance in The Master.

He is another actor willing to go to extreme lengths to assume a character. He’s had quite a life, too, so if you have some extra time, read up on him. Fascinating.

And finally, last but not least, we have Denzel Washington in Flight, which explores our complicated relationship with our flawed heroes.

I’ve always had a thing for Mr. Washington. He seems like such a gentleman and he’s played a wide, wide array of parts.

Happy Oscar FROS, m’dears! Which is your favorite to win? However it turns out, may your week be as sparkly as the diamonds on display today and may your favorite actor walk away with the statue, too!

  1. Kathleen O says:

I think Daniel Day Lewis is the front runner. I know Bradley Cooper won all the Golden Globes and such. And I love Hugh Jackman not matter what, but DDL’s portrayal of Lincoln, was outstanding.

    1. Karen Hawkins says:

Kathleen, I need to see Lincoln again — such a good performance by DDL!

  2. Kelly Proellocks says:

Hugh is going to win. Have a great week!

    1. Karen Hawkins says:

Thanks, Kelly! He was be so tickled, wouldn’t he? :)

  3. Looney Tune says:

I have only seen Silver Linings Playbook and Lincoln, so I have a hard time predicting who will win. I agree, that Daniel Day Lewis was very convincing.

Joaquin Phoenix (based on his picture and his interesting life) is the perfect candidate for the “tortured rogue with a troubling past” type of hero in a novel. He is unique and unusual enough to be very intimidating and one of those guys who is only perfect for just the right lady.

    1. Karen Hawkins says:

Looney, that’s a fascinating analysis of Joaquin. And I can see that perfectly. He really is a troubled genius.

  4. Julie says:

Would LOVE to see Hugh or Denzel win, but it will likely go to DDL…

    1. Karen Hawkins says:

Julie, it’ll be close, whoever wins. Some of these actors took some real chances, didn’t they?

  5. dbrown3400 says:

If only we could get Bradley Cooper to come un/dressed like that to the Oscars. I haven’t seen snippets of Joaquin Phoenix’s performance, although I did see Les Miz, and pieces of the other actors’ films. I agree with Kathleen about DDL. They’re all good or wouldn’t have been nominated. Karen, I will be rooting for Hugh, although I don’t think he’s going to win this time.

    1. Karen Hawkins says:

dbrown, I really have no idea who will win because there really were some great parts this year. I’m going to watch it, though, and will root for Hugh, even though I think you’re right and he probably won’t get it.

  6. Connie Fischer says:

I will take Bradley Cooper ANY day! :-)

    1. Karen Hawkins says:

Connie, he’s plain old HAWT, isn’t he? And so charming, too.

  7. Karen H in NC says:

I’ve only had the opportunity to watch Flight. The others aren’t on Netflix yet. So, judging by DW’s performance in that film, he gets my vote! Of course, Denzel gets my vote for just being there. I like Bradley Cooper too. He’s changed a great deal since his Will Tippin days in Alias (which I am watching again for the umpteenth time). He gets my runner up vote!

    1. Karen Hawkins says:

Karen H, it’s going to be a neck-and-neck race. So many great parts and terrific actors. I’m just glad I don’t have to pick one!

  8. Carla C says:

Joaquin in The Master was “masterful”, I really that he deserves it. Brad was good, I think the story made Daniel more so than his acting, Denzel was great — but there is only one winner… us and FROS

    1. Karen Hawkins says:

Carla, LOL! We did win, didn’t we?

Btw, I heard that Joaquin’s performance was amazing. I need to see that movie!

  9. Kelly Ryan Watson says:

You lost me at Bradley Cooper. Then I cleared my eyes and wiped my chin. Needless to say they all are spectacular!

    1. Karen Hawkins says:

Lol! Glad to warm up your day!

  10. Freshechelle says:

I was surprised by Bradley’s performance. I really wanted to leave the theater, I was so frustrated by his characters bad decisions in this start of the film.

Need to see the rest. Why didn’t I see Flight? I meant to.

    Thanks for the beefcake!

    1. Karen Hawkins says:

Fresh, I have a list of movies I need to see. I haven’t seen Silver Linings yet, but I want to.

  11. LouisaCornell says:

Well and a Happy Oscar Sunday to you too! What a wonderful way to greet the day! For the first time in a while I feel all of these guys deserve the nomination.

I understand BC came into his own in this role.

And DDL is a force of nature. The man’s ability to slip into the skin of a character is nothing short of amazing. And his face does indeed have that something indefinable.

Hugh is incomparable in any role he plays! I haven’t seen Les Mis yet, but I CANNOT WAIT!!

JP is just plain scary. He is phenomenally talented, mesmerizing in performance, but mercurial in his personal life. My only fear is that any flame that burns that brightly risks burning out or exploding.

Glory is one of my favorite films ever and it is because of Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Matthew Broderick’s performances. I have heard great things about Flight!

    1. Karen Hawkins says:

Louisa, I’m impressed this year, too. I need to schedule a big movie night and watch all of these movies.

  12. Suzanne Enoch says:

In this race, I don’t see any way we can lose. *g*

    1. Karen Hawkins says:

      Exactly. It’s win-win-win-win-win-win-win-win-win.

  13. Archer says:

Joaquin Phoenix is so ugly/hot. Such a shame he’s kinda nutty. I hope Hugh wins :)

  14. evlqn says:

I will just take one of each please. I am getting a late start to my day because I can and decisions are too hard for me right now.

  15. Judy F says:

Thanks for the oscar hotties. Sadly I haven’t seen a picture in ages.

  16. RobinRBL says:

I will have on my evening gown, with elbow length gloves and of course, my feather boa, all ready for the Oscars!

And a tribute to 50 years of Bond, so my man Daniel Craig will be there for that!

  17. Ginger Robertson says:

Bradley Cooper has my vote. I will leave what’s his name for you Karen. See what a sport I am?

  18. Mary Preston says:

From where I’m drooling, sitting, they are all winners.
